Reducing emissions can actually increase global warming

The world is dealing with two serious problems affecting the atmosphere:  the growing levels of carbon dioxide leading to a warming climate and the effects of air pollution on human health.  It turns out that these two things are connected in complicated ways.

Countries around the world are racing to mitigate global warming by limiting carbon dioxide emissions.   The combustion of fossil fuels as well as wood and other biomass produces sulfate aerosols, which are associated with acid rain as well as many human health problems.   Air pollution causes an estimated seven million premature deaths per year worldwide, so reducing it is imperative.

The complication is that sulfate aerosols in the upper atmosphere actually have a cooling effect on surface air temperatures.  Aerosols create bigger clouds and increase light scattering, both of which result in less sunlight reaching the surface.  Large natural sources of sulfate aerosols – such as volcanic eruptions – can temporarily cool the earth until they settle out of the atmosphere.

There are many kinds and sizes of atmospheric aerosols, making predicting their effects and behavior difficult.  For example, black carbon aerosols from forest fires tend to suppress cloud formation by warming the air and making tiny water droplets evaporate.  However, sulfate aerosols from burning fossil fuels make clouds grow larger.

Analysis has shown that air pollution has actually reduced the amount of warming that has taken place to date.  A new study by Kyushu University in Japan looked at the long-term climate effects of reductions in sulfate aerosols.  The loss of cooling effect from light-scattering aerosols as emissions are reduced is a factor that cannot be ignored.

Prickly Pear As A Sustainable Crop | Earth Wise

Searching for more sustainable food and fuel crops

The fruits and pads of opuntia, better known as prickly pear cactus, find their way into people’s diets in many arid and semi-arid places around the world.  In Mexico, the pads are known as nopales and are used in a variety of dishes.  The pears themselves are used in jams, salads, and juices.

A five-year study by the University of Nevada Reno College of Agriculture, Biotechnology & Natural Resources investigated the prospects for cactus pear to become a major crop like soybeans and corn and to help provide a biofuel source.

As the climate changes, dry areas are going to get dryer and drought issues will increasingly affect traditional crops.

The study looked at the particular opuntia species called the spineless cactus pear and found that it had the highest fruit production while using up to 80% less water than some traditional crops.  Cactus pear can be used for both human consumption and livestock feed.  As a perennial crop, once the fruit and pads are harvested for food, the remaining biomass can be used for biofuel production.

Corn and sugar cane are the most utilized bioenergy crops right now, but these use three to six times more water than cactus pear.  The cactus pear productivity is on par with corn and sugar cane, but not only do they use a fraction of the water, they also have higher heat tolerance.

Over 40% of land area around the world is classified as semi-arid or arid.  There is enormous potential for planting cactus for carbon sequestration.  If nothing else, it makes great sense to grow cactus pear crops in abandoned areas that are marginal and may not be suitable for other crops.

Living On Trash | Earth Wise

Aquatic river species are increasingly choosing to live on plastic

Litter is persistent and widespread in rivers worldwide.  The world’s major rivers and estuaries are hotspots for plastic waste.  Trash and microparticles wash down tributaries and build up before rivers enter oceans.

New research published in the journal Freshwater Biology has found that as this waste accumulates, aquatic river species like insects and snails are increasingly choosing to settle on plastic rather than on natural features like rocks and fallen branches.

Researchers from the University of Nottingham in the UK collected plastic waste from three rivers in eastern Britain along with rocks from the same rivers.  Their analysis of all the macroinvertebrates on the items’ surfaces found that the surfaces of plastic waste items had nearly four times the diversity of the small animals as did the rocks.  In addition, the more complex the plastic’s surface was, the higher the diversity.

The growing abundance of plastic waste coincides with a decline in natural habitat features in urban rivers.  This is a result of increasing amounts of sedimentation from development that blankets riverbeds in silt and sand, restricting the supply and movement of rocks, fallen tree branches, and aquatic plants.

Clearly litter can serve as a place for various species to colonize, but trash is not a good environment for them.  Trash can release toxic chemicals and entangle animals.  Microplastics pose risks for the animals if ingested.

Estimates are that between 1.15 and 2.41 million tons of plastic waste enter the ocean every year from rivers around the world.  Natural habitats have become rare in urban rivers.  River ecosystems built around piles of trash are not a good thing.

Ozone Recovery Back On Track | Earth Wise

Ozone recovery is on track

In 2019, we reported that new emissions of chlorofluorocarbons from eastern Asia were threatening the recovery of the ozone layer in the upper atmosphere.  An unexpected spike in CFC emissions was threatening to undo the progress made under the Montreal Protocol, the international treaty under which every country in the world agreed to phase out the production and use of the ozone-eating chemicals by 2010.

In 2018, a team of scientists reported the spike in emissions of the particular formulation CFC-11 that began in 2013.  By 2019, a second team reported that a significant portion of the emissions could be traced to the Shandong and Hebie provinces in China where there were small factories using the chemical to manufacture foam insulation used in refrigerators and buildings.

Recently, in two papers published in Nature, the same two research teams reported that the global annual emissions of CFC-11 into the atmosphere have declined sharply.   They traced a substantial fraction of the global emission reductions to the very same regions of eastern China where they had previously reported the original spike. 

The results are very encouraging.   If CFC-11 emissions had continued to rise, or even just level off, there would have been real problems with ozone depletion.  Two independent global monitoring networks – one operated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and one led by MIT called the Advanced Global Atmospheric Gases Experiment – are doing a good job of detecting threats to the world’s protective ozone layer.  However, the Chinese sources only accounted for about half of the CFC-11 entering the atmosphere.  We still don’t know where the rest of it is coming from.

As the climate changes, choosing what species to protect is becoming more difficult

As plants and animals around the world grapple with climate change, invasive species, disease, and other threats, conservationists grapple with the issue of what it means to protect what is natural and how far to go to prevent extinctions.

Australia is where many of these issues have risen to the forefront.  Imported mammals – particularly cats and foxes – have decimated many of Australia’s indigenous marsupials.  Much of the focus for decades has been on killing off the invaders and cordoning off protected animals.  In recent years, however, there have been efforts to expose prey animals to limited numbers of predators to develop prey populations that are better equipped to survive among predators.  Getting rid of all the predators is not realistic.  Saving species may require helping them to adapt.

On the Great Barrier Reef, where half its coral populations have perished because of rising water temperatures, scientists are breeding corals that are more heat tolerant.  They are even considering the use of gene editing technology to “assist evolution” in developing corals that can survive in a changing world.

At SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry in Syracuse, New York, researchers have produced a genetically modified American chestnut tree that is resistant to chestnut blight, the fungal pathogen that killed off nearly every chestnut tree in North America in the early 20th century.

The idea of conservation is to protect what is natural in our world.  However, at a time when there are unprecedented threats to so many species, the distinction between what is natural and what is artificial may no longer provide a sound guide to what should be done to protect life on earth.

Can We Tow Icebergs To Use Their Water? | Earth Wise

Using icebergs for freshwater

At any given time, there are thousands of icebergs adrift in Antarctica that are hundreds or even thousands of feet across.  For at least fifty years, there has been speculation about whether such icebergs could be towed from the Antarctic to places experiencing freshwater shortages.  The feasibility of such a scheme is still the subject of studies that nowadays include sophisticated computer modeling.

Places like the Persian Gulf, Cape Town, South Africa, and Perth, Australia all experience water shortages and could benefit tremendously from having a large iceberg towed to their waters.

How big an iceberg would it take to quench the thirst of a city like Cape Town?  Computer models show that an iceberg 2,000 feet long and 650 feet thick could produce enough water to supply the city for more than a year.  However, with water temperatures in the 60s in the area, even such a large iceberg would melt away within weeks.  So, to get enough water for a year, it would require a much larger iceberg – one at least a couple of miles long.

Daunting problems include figuring out how many and what sort of ships would be required.  An alternative to such giant icebergs would be finding a way to insulate the icebergs so they don’t melt as quickly, thereby allowing much smaller and more towable icebergs to be harvested.

Beyond these issues, there are the ecological issues of the effects of huge amounts of very cold fresh water affecting local marine ecosystems. 

Despite a wide range of challenges, there is continued interest in the idea of using icebergs as a source of very pure fresh water.  In an increasingly thirsty world, it might someday actually happen.

Global Warming Could Stabilize | Earth Wise

Reducing emissions could stabilize global temperatures

The world has been heading toward climate disaster with the effects of greenhouse gas-induced warming looming larger and larger.  But recent analysis published in Nature Climate Change offers hope that rapidly eliminating emissions could stabilize global temperatures just within a couple of decades.

For quite some time, it has been assumed that further global warming would be locked in for generations regardless of the extent of emissions reductions going forward.  This conclusion was based on having a certain carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere which would linger for hundreds of years even if emissions were reduced.

Recent analysis takes into account the dynamism of the Earth’s natural systems which could actually reduce atmospheric CO2 content because of the huge carbon absorption capacity of oceans, wetlands, and forests.  The key requirement is to drastically reduce emissions so that these natural systems can take over.

More than 100 countries have pledged to get to net zero emissions by 2050.  That means they will emit no more carbon dioxide than is removed from the atmosphere by such actions as restoring forests.   The UK, Japan, and the European Union are among the countries that have set this zero target, and the United States is joining the club.

Climate models show that a global temperature rise of 2 degrees Celsius over that of the pre-industrial period would lead to global calamities that include punishing heatwaves, flooding, and mass displacement of people.  The world has already heated up by 1.1 degrees and governments have committed to restrain the rise to less than 1.5 degrees under the Paris Climate Agreement.

The Largest Renewable Energy Project In The World | Earth Wise

India is building the largest renewable energy project in the world

India has broken ground on what is planned to be the largest renewable energy project in the world:  a 30-gigawatt wind and solar power project in the state of Gujarat.

The renewable energy park will have two zones:  a 122,000-acre hybrid park zone that will accommodate 25 gigawatts of wind and solar power plants and a 57,000-acre zone entirely dedicated to wind power.  Multiple developers will be building the power plants in the hybrid zone.  A single company has been allotted the wind power zone.  The selected developers have to develop 50% of the total generation capacity in the next 3 years and finish the project in five years. The project is expected to create jobs for 100,000 people. Total investment in the project will be about $20 billion.

This is not technically a single standalone project but is rather an aggregation of multiple projects in a single general area.  Nonetheless, it represents the largest renewable energy development ever.  By comparison, the entire United States has a total of 50 gigawatts of installed solar power in large plants – which does not include any rooftop solar.  Total wind power capacity in the U.S. is a little over 100 gigawatts.  So, the 30-gigawatt Indian project is huge by any measure.

India already gets over 30% of its electricity from renewable sources, making it one of the largest renewable energy markets in the world.  The country has a goal of 60% renewable energy by 2030, amounting to 450 gigawatts of capacity.  This will require the country to double its already substantial renewable capacity in less than 10 years.  The Gujarat energy park will represent substantial progress towards that goal.

Global Warming And Sea Turtle Births | Earth Wise

Climate change poses a serious threat to sea turtles

Climate change is a serious threat to species whose sex is determined by temperature.  Among these are sea turtles.  Whether marine turtles are born male or female turns out to depend on the temperature of their nest during incubation.

Sea turtle nests need to be around 84.6 degrees Fahrenheit on average to produce a 50:50 sex ratio for embryos developing in eggs.  If temperatures are higher, embryos predominantly become female.  There is a transitional range of temperatures over which both males and females are produced.  Below that range, only males are produced; above that range, only females are produced.

According to recent research published in the journal Conservation Science and Practice, sand temperatures along the Red Sea exceeded the 84.6-degree threshold in all but one of the sites studied.  Some sites measured nearly 96 degrees.  The Red Sea region is home to five of the world’s seven species of sea turtles, including endangered green turtles and critically endangered hawksbill turtles.

Skewing the sex distribution of a species is a serious threat to the future survival of the population.

The Red Sea findings are similar to observations around the world.  In Florida, sea turtle hatchlings were born 100% female in seven out the past 10 years, and in the other three years, males only made up 10-20% of the brood.  In Australia’s Raine Island, the largest green turtle nesting ground in the Pacific Ocean, the ratio of female to male turtle hatchlings in 2018 was 116:1.

Marine turtles have been around since the late Triassic period and have adapted to previous climate shifts.  But the rapid pace of human-driven climate change is threatening the future survival of these creatures.

Caribbean Coral Reefs Under Siege | Earth Wise

Coral reefs face myriad of dangers

Coral reefs around the world have been suffering from warming seas and increasing acidification, both a result of human activity.  In the Caribbean, a new threat has emerged in the form of invasive algae.

New research published in Scientific Reports explains how an aggressive, crust-like alga is overgrowing shallow reefs and taking the place of coral that was damaged by powerful storms that exposed areas of the undersea rock where corals grew. 

Researchers from Oxford University, the Carnegie Institution, and California State University Northridge have been studying these peyssonnelid algal crusts, or PACs, for several years in the U.S. Virgin Islands.  The PAC has been out-competing coral larvae for surface space and then growing over the existing reef architecture, greatly damaging delicate reef ecosystems.

New corals actually prefer to settle on crusty surfaces created by a different type of algae called crustose algae, or CCA.  CCA acts as guideposts for coral larvae by producing biochemical signals as part of a microbial community that entice baby coral to affix itself.

In contrast, the destructive PAC algae exclude coral settlement. The researchers determined that the microbial community associated with PAC algae is deployed to deter grazing from fish and other marine creatures.  Unfortunately, it also deters coral.

Fragile coral ecosystems are already under assault by environmental pollution and global warming.  Now, in the aftermath of powerful hurricanes like Irma and Maria, algal crusts are taking over reef communities and posing an existential threat to Caribbean corals.

Dust And Himalayan Glaciers | Earth Wise

Dust playing a major role in melting glaciers

Glaciers in the Himalayas have been melting and retreating, as have glaciers around the world.  As is the case elsewhere, human-driven climate change is a major factor.  But at the lofty heights of the Himalayas, warming temperatures are not the biggest culprit.  Black carbon – released into the air by burning fossil fuels or biomass such as plants, trees, and shrubs – darkens the snow and causes it to absorb more of the sun’s heat.  A recent study by an international team of scientist has identified another important factor:  dust.

An estimated 5 billion tons of desert dust enters the Earth’s atmosphere every year.  Dust from places like Saudi Arabia gets picked up by spring winds and gets deposited on the western sides of mountains, where it can make the air 10 times more polluted than most European cities.  Dust blows across industrial and desert areas in the Indian subcontinent and the Middle East and lands in the Himalayas.  According to the new study, this dust is often the dominant cause of snow melt in those areas.

Desert dust causes snow melt in the same way that black carbon does.   Dirty snow absorbs sunlight more easily than clean snow.

Desert dust is a natural part of Earth’s systems, but the amount of it in the atmosphere has steadily increased since the Industrial Revolution, when humans greatly expanded into desert areas and broke through surface crust that held large amounts of dust in place.

There is not much we can do about desert dust, short of eliminating deserts.  But the disappearance of the Himalayan ice pack – which sustains over a billion people – can be mitigated by reducing greenhouse gas emissions to address climate change .

Getting Value From Plastic Waste | Earth Wise

Extracting value from plastic waste

To date, the world has produced more than five billion tons of plastic and is making more all the time.  Based on the way things are currently done, most of that will end up in landfills or in the natural environment.  By 2050, the amount of plastic is expected to exceed 13 billion tons.   This is one of the world’s biggest environmental problems.

Recently, an international collaboration by universities and institutions in the UK, China, and Saudi Arabia has developed a method of converting plastic waste into hydrogen gas and high-value solid carbon.

The technique was achieved with a new type of catalysis that uses microwaves to activate catalyst particles that effectively strip hydrogen from plastic polymers.  The work was recently published in the journal Nature Catalysis and details how the researchers mixed mechanically pulverized plastic particles with a microwave-susceptor catalyst of iron oxide and aluminum oxide.  That mixture was then subjected to microwave treatment and yielded a large volume of hydrogen gas and a residue of carbonaceous material, most of which was identified as carbon nanotubes.

The process is more rapid than most methods for dealing with plastic waste and can extract over 97% of the hydrogen in plastic without producing any carbon dioxide emissions. 

The new method represents an attractive potential solution to the problem of plastic waste.  Instead of polluting the planet, plastics could become a valuable feedstock for producing clean hydrogen fuel as well as valuable carbon materials.  Proponents of the so-called hydrogen economy have continued to seek a green and economical way to produce hydrogen.  This new work might be just what they are looking for.

More Extreme Weather | Earth Wise

If it seems like natural disasters happen more frequently than they used to, that is because they do.  A new report from the United Nations entitled “The Human Cost of Disasters 2000-2019” provides the facts.  From 2000 to 2019, there were 7,348 natural disasters around the world, compared with 4,212 natural disasters from 1980-1999. 

The culprit is the climate.  Climate-related disasters increased from 3,556 events during the 1980-1999 period to 6,681 in the past 20 years, again an increase of more than 3,000.

The global economic losses associated with natural disasters have been staggering.  The earlier 20-year period saw $1.63 trillion in losses while the recent period resulted in $2.97 trillion in losses.   Disasters killed 1.19 million people in the earlier period and 1.23 million in the recent period.  It is a testimonial to the skills and efforts of disaster management agencies, civil protection departments, fire brigades, public health authorities, the Red Cross and Red Crescent, and many NGOs that the cost in human lives was not much greater over the past 20 years.

According to a statement from the UN, human society is being willfully destructive.  They draw that conclusion in light of reviewing the disaster events over the past 20 years and seeing the failure of society to act on science and early warnings to invest in prevention, climate change adaptation, and disaster risk reduction.

The Arctic Northeast Passage May Open | Earth Wise

The Northwest Passage is the sea route between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans through the Arctic Ocean.  It goes along the northern coast of North America, traveling though the Canadian Arctic Archipelago.  In the past, it was the domain of intrepid explorers like Roald Amundsen.  Because of the receding ice in the Arctic, in recent years it has become possible to travel the Northwest Passage by cruise ship.

The Northeast Passage connects the same two oceans along the Arctic coasts of Norway and Siberia.  The sustained loss of sea ice is now leading to accessibility of Arctic sea passages through this route.

Compared with the customary route through the Strait of Malacca in Malaysia and the Suez Canal, using the Northeast Passage could reduce the travel distance between Europe and northwest Asia by one-third.  This would reduce the expense of transportation and lower environmental pollution.  Many Asian countries have a strong strategic and economic interest in Arctic shipping.  Russia would gain strong competitive advantages for its liquified natural gas industry.

According to a recent study at the Northwest Institute of Eco-Environment and Resources of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the continuing warming of the Arctic seas is likely to result in the Northeast Passage being navigable for open water ships by next year and will continue to be increasingly hospitable to marine traffic.

The economic and strategic benefits to the opening of the Northeast Passage are quite clear.  What is also clear is that the underlying cause of the opening of the passage – the dramatic loss of Arctic sea ice – is not beneficial to the world at all and is a harbinger of troubling things in our future.

Nitrous Oxide Is No Laughing Matter | Earth Wise

Carbon dioxide is the most well-known of greenhouse gases.  But there are others deserving of their own spotlight.  Nitrous oxide is one of them.  It turns out that the same “laughing gas” once used by dentists as an anesthetic is pretty bad for the environment.  In fact, it’s more than 300 times more potent as a greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide, and it can remain in the atmosphere for more than 100 years.

According to a new study by a team of international scientists, rising nitrous oxide emissions around the world are jeopardizing the climate goals of the Paris Agreement.  The growing use of nitrogen fertilizers in global food production is increasing atmospheric concentrations of nitrous oxide.

The study, which was led by Auburn University and recently published in the journal Nature, finds that nitrous oxide emissions are increasing faster than any emission scenario developed by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.  The current trajectory would lead to global mean temperature increases well above 3°C from pre-industrial levels.  The Paris Agreement aims to limit global warming to less than 2°C.    

According to the study, nitrous oxide levels have risen 20% from pre-industrial levels, with the fastest growth observed in the last 50 years due to emissions from human activities.  The largest contributors to nitrous oxide emissions come from East Asia, South Asia, South America, and Africa.  The United States, China, and India dominate nitrous oxide emissions from synthetic fertilizers, while Africa and South America dominate releases of nitrous oxide from natural sources, like livestock manure. 

Nitrous oxide emissions pose an increasing threat to the climate.

The hottest September

Here’s a news item that is like many other recent news items:  September 2020 was the hottest September since 1880, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.   The warm September is a part of a year that so far is poised to be at least the second hottest year in the 141-year climate record.

The ten warmest Septembers on record have all occurred since 2005, and the seven warmest Septembers have occurred in the past seven years.

So far, the year-to-date average global temperature has been the second warmest on record, being just 0.07 degrees Fahrenheit lower than the record year-to-date temperature set in 2016.  Expectations are that 2020 will end up somewhere among the three warmest years on record for the globe.

September was warm in many places around the world.  California and Oregon had their warmest September ever.  Europe had its warmest September on record, Asia had its second warmest September on record as did Australia and South America. 

So far, it has been the hottest year-to-date on record in Europe, Asia, and the Gulf of Mexico.  No land or ocean areas anywhere had record-cold year-to-date temperatures. 

Global temperatures represent an average over the entire surface of the planet.  The fact that the global temperature is now nearly one Celsius degree above the 20th century average means that a vast amount of heat has been added in order to warm all the oceans, atmosphere, and land by that much.  So, every uptick in global temperature is a big deal.

Meanwhile, the average Arctic sea ice coverage for September was the second smallest on record.  The 14 smallest minimum annual sea ice extents have all occurred in the past 14 years.

Lead Exposure Remains A Persistent Problem | Earth Wise

According to a new report from UNICEF and the international nonprofit Pure Earth, a staggering number of children – approximately 800 million or one out of every three globally – may have dangerously high levels of lead in their blood.    

Long-term exposure to lead can cause serious health problems, especially in children.  Children are particularly vulnerable because their early years are characterized by rapid growth and brain development. 

Lead is a powerful neurotoxin that can cause damage even at low levels of exposure.  Lead poisoning can be acute, and can cause all sorts of health issues, including stomach pain, brain damage, and even death.  Because lead accumulates in the body over time, lead poisoning can develop slowly. The most common symptom of lead poisoning is lethargy.  Lead exposure can also contribute to a lower IQ and behavioral problems that can last a lifetime.     

Lead is a naturally occurring element found in small amounts in earth’s crust.  But as a result of human activities, lead can be found in all parts of the environment, including the air, soil, and water. 

According to the report, much of the lead poisoning comes from lead-acid batteries that are not properly recycled.  Water pipes, paint, canned foods, makeup, toys, and even contaminated spices can all be sources of lead exposure.  Lead was also previously added to gasoline and traces of this remain in soil samples today. 

The report found that children in low- or middle-income countries, especially in South Asia and among marginalized groups in general, are most vulnerable to lead poisoning. 

Lead exposure remains a dangerous and persistent problem all around the world.

Converting Seawater into Drinking Water

A chemist at the University of Copenhagen has invented a technology that uses carbon dioxide to convert seawater into drinking water within minutes.  This desalination technology has the potential to replace electricity with CO2 and be used in survival gear and in large-scale industrial plants in places where people don’t have clean drinking water.

Over 800 million people worldwide lack access to clean drinking water and that number is growing rapidly.  Seawater is a vital source of drinking water in many parts of the world, but desalination faces the major challenge of being highly energy intensive.  Desalination plants use huge amounts of fossil fuel-generated electricity and therefore contribute to climate change.

The Copenhagen technology is reminiscent of a SodaStream machine.  Carbon dioxide is added to water, initiating a chemical reaction.  But instead of using it for bubbly carbonation, it is used to separate salt from water.  It works by adding a chemical called CO2-responsive diamine to saltwater.  The diamine compound binds with the added CO2 and acts as a sponge to absorb the salt, which can then be separated.  The entire process takes one to ten minutes.  Once the CO2 is removed, the salt is released again, allowing the diamine to be reused for several more rounds of desalination.

In the laboratory, the method removed 99.6% of the salt in seawater.  The technology is still being developed to lower its price and optimize the recycling process.  It is also being tested on a small scale in the form of water bottles fitted with special filters that can be used in lifeboats or in other outdoor settings.  Ultimately, it could be used to greatly reduce the energy consumption of desalination plants.

The Cost of Cleaning Up Ocean Plastic | Earth Wise

Cleaning up ocean plastic carries a large price tag

Small island developing states increasingly find themselves with large amounts of plastic waste.  A recent study looked at the financial cost for removing it.

Aldabra Atoll is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Seychelles.  It is the world’s second-largest coral atoll and is the home of 307 species of animals and plants, including the largest population of giant tortoises in the world.  Aldabra has been called one of the wonders of the world and one of the crown jewels of the Indian Ocean.

Last year, a team from the University of Oxford and the Seychelles Island Foundation, spent five weeks removing litter that had washed up on Aldabra’s shores.  In total, they removed 25 tons of plastic litter which, to their surprise, was dominated by waste from the fishing industry.  The researchers now estimate that over 500 tons of litter remain on the island, 83% of which consists of buoys, ropes, nets, and, of all things, over 300,000 individual flipflops.  This is the largest accumulation of plastic waste reported for any single island in the world.

According to the study, the cost to clean up the entire island would be nearly $5 million, requiring 18,000 person-hours of labor.  A project of this magnitude is beyond the capacity of non-profit organizations like the Seychelles Islands Foundation.

The plastic pollution in Aldabra is related to the fishing industry in Seychelles, which provides tuna to high-income markets around the world.  The research highlights how even remote highly protected island ecosystems are impacted by global pollution and how difficult and costly it is to remedy.

Native Bees In A Honeybee World | Earth Wise

There is a great deal of attention on the plight of bees and other pollinators.  Much of that focuses on the problems plaguing the large, domesticated honeybee colonies that are trucked from region to region to pollinate everything from almonds to fruit trees.  Managed bee colonies have recently been losing more than 40% of their population over the course of a year.  But overall, honeybees are still relatively safe. They are a globally distributed, domesticated species and are not remotely threatened with extinction.

But another group of bees – native bees – faces a different range of threats, most linked to habitat loss.   Worldwide, roughly 20,000 native bee species have evolved over millions of years to thrive in countless habitats, where they have specialized in pollinating specific flowers and plants – in some cases just a single plant.

Scientists have estimated that, globally, 1 in 6 bee species is regionally extinct. In the United States there are about 4,000 native bee species, most of which are solitary bees that nest in the ground or cavities, with many that require just one or a few plant species for sustenance. At least 23 percent of U.S. native bees have declined, with bees in areas with heavy commodity-crop production particularly hard hit due to habitat loss and pesticide use. Other threats to native bees include climate-driven sea-level rise and increased temperatures, loss of host plants, and competition and disease from non-native honeybees. 50% of Midwestern native bee species disappeared from their historic ranges in the last 100 years.   Four of our bumblebee species declined 96% in the last 20 years, and three species are believed to already be extinct. 

Native bees are in big trouble.
