Supermarket bargains and food waste

Food waste is a major global problem.  The UN estimates that one third of all food goes to waste.  Apart from the fact that this is happening in a world where many people don’t have enough to eat, food waste is both an economic and a climate problem.

Researchers from the University of Copenhagen and Southern Methodist University investigated how different types of grocery sales strategies affect people’s shopping and food waste.  The result was that bulk offers increase food sales by nearly 20%, but they also lead to increased food waste in people’s homes.

The study analyzed over 43,000 purchases of fresh vegetables in eight Swedish supermarkets.  When customers were offered “two-fer” offers, they bought significantly more than when only single items were available.  The attraction of a special offer can be strong.  But, according to a follow-up survey, food from bulk offers ended up in the trash more often.  People thought they were saving money, but often ended up buying more than they can eat.

The researchers tested two strategies for reducing overbuying.  One was to make the actual savings explicit by displaying the regular price next to the offer.  The second was to put a friendly reminder on the offer sign along the lines of “I’d love to come home with you if you eat me.”  Both of these approaches resulted in reduced sales of 9-11% compared to the original volume offer despite the sale price remaining the same. 

Clearly, small changes in marketing can make a big difference.  Supermarkets play a big role in the occurrence of food waste and they have the ability to help nudge consumers into better behavior.

Air pollution and human health

Climate change is making air quality worse in many parts of the world. Rising temperatures increase ground-level ozone, and more frequent wildfires release harmful smoke and particulates into the air. These changes, combined with ongoing pollution from sources like vehicle exhaust and industrial emissions, lead to longer and more intense episodes of unhealthy air.

A new study led by researchers from the University of Toronto in Canada examined more than 600 people and found that long-term exposure to air pollution is associated with early signs of heart damage.  The research, which was recently published in the journal Radiology, indicates that fine particulate matter in the air may contribute to diffuse myocardial fibrosis, a form of scarring in the heart muscle that can precede heart failure. 

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death worldwide. 

Long-term exposure to common air pollutants is also linked to a significantly higher risk of dementia.  A separate study by researchers from the University of Cambridge in the UK analyzed data from nearly 30 million people and found that for every 10 micrograms of fine particulate matter per cubic meter of air, the risk of dementia increases by 17%.  The study, which was recently published in The Lancet Planetary Health, found that exposure to nitrogen dioxide and soot was also strongly associated with an increased risk of dementia.

Dementia is estimated to affect more than 57 million people worldwide, a number that is expected to swell to 152 million by 2050.

Strengthening efforts to reduce air pollution could make a real difference for the environment and human health.

Seaweed and concrete

Developing more sustainable and environmentally-friendly concrete using seaweed

Modern civilization is pretty much made of concrete.  People use more concrete than any other substance apart from water.  But concrete is made from cement, and cement is the source of 10% of all carbon dioxide emissions worldwide.

Researchers at the University of Washington and Microsoft have developed a new kind of concrete made by mixing dried, powdered seaweed with cement.  By fortifying cement with seaweed, the global warming potential of the concrete is reduced by 21% without weakening it. 

This novel recipe for concrete was developed using machine learning models, arriving upon it in a fraction of the time it would have taken by traditional experimentation.

Producing cement leads to carbon emissions from the fossil fuels used to heat raw materials and from a chemical reaction called calcination that occurs during the production process.  Seaweed is a carbon sink that pulls carbon dioxide out of the air and stores it while it grows.  By replacing some of cement in concrete, the resultant product has a much smaller carbon footprint.

Machine learning was used to predict the ideal mixture of cement and seaweed to yield concrete with a reduced carbon footprint that still passed mechanical strength tests.  Finding the right mixture would have taken 5 years ordinarily, but the machine learning process took only 28 days.

The researchers plan to generalize their work to different kinds of algae and even to food waste or other natural materials in order to create local, sustainable cement alternatives around the world.

New Orleans is sinking

As climate change accelerates, rising sea levels are putting coastal communities at greater risk of flooding and storm surge. Driven by melting glaciers and warming oceans, global sea levels are rising at an increasing rate. For low-lying cities like New Orleans, even small increases can have serious consequences. And that risk is compounded by another factor: the land itself is sinking.

Much of New Orleans already sits at or below sea level, and parts of the city and its surrounding wetlands are gradually sinking. While most of the city remains stable, a new study by researchers from Tulane University suggests that sections of the region’s $15 billion post-Katrina flood protection system may require ongoing upgrades to keep pace with long-term subsidence.

The study, recently published in the journal Science Advances, used satellite data to track changes in ground elevation across Greater New Orleans between 2002-2020.  The researchers found that some areas – including neighborhoods, wetlands, and even concrete floodwalls – are sinking by more than an inch each year. In some spots, the land is dropping by nearly two inches annually.

Alarmingly, some of the concrete floodwalls and levees built to protect the city after Hurricane Katrina are themselves sinking. In a few cases, they are losing elevation faster than sea levels are rising, reducing their capacity to block storm surges.

The study highlights how satellite monitoring can play a critical role in guiding infrastructure maintenance and urban planning – not just in New Orleans – but in vulnerable coastal cities around the world.

Wildfires and water quality

Wildfires affect water quality long after the flames are out

Hotter and drier conditions driven by climate change are leading to an increasing number of wildfires in North America and around the world. The damage wildfires cause – to forests, homes, and communities – is well-known. But long after the flames are gone, the effects can linger, especially in rivers and streams, where water quality may suffer for years.

A new study by scientists at the CIRES institute at the University of Colorado Boulder analyzed more than 100,000 water samples from more than 500 sites across the Western U.S. and found that wildfires can degrade water quality for up to eight years after a fire. The research, which was recently published in the journal Nature Communications Earth & Environment, found elevated levels of organic carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, sediment, and turbidity – the cloudiness of water – in basins affected by fire.

This large-scale analysis reveals watersheds take longer to recover from wildfires than previously thought, with widespread, long-lasting impacts often going undetected for years.

Organic carbon, phosphorus, and turbidity remain elevated for one to five years after a fire. Nitrogen and sediment levels stay notably high for up to eight years. Fire-driven impacts are worse in more forested areas.

Each watershed in the study responded differently depending on local conditions.  In some places, sediment levels surged to as much as 2,000 times normal levels, while others remained relatively unchanged.

The research team hopes its findings can help guide future planning efforts to improve wildfire resilience.

Geothermal energy may be safe

The Trump Administration is outwardly hostile to renewable energy, especially solar and wind power.  Federal support for these energy sources that are by far the most rapidly growing energy sources across the globe is being gutted while fossil fuels are being propped up.

There is also renewed enthusiasm for nuclear power and, somewhat surprisingly, geothermal heat.   Geothermal is a renewable and clean energy source that has long been mostly overlooked and underfunded.  The main reasons are its expense and the fact that its large-scale use is unproven. 

Historically, geothermal energy has relied upon naturally occurring features such as hot springs and shallow underground heat sources.  However, technological breakthroughs that began in 2013 have led to enhanced geothermal systems, or EGS.  EGS makes use of the fact that if you drill deep enough into the earth pretty much anywhere, you will encounter substantial amounts of heat.  EGS plants pump water three miles down or more where it encounters rock that reaches over 500 degrees.  The piping hot water is then brought to the surface where it spins turbines to generate electricity.

Several companies are developing EGS in the U.S.  financed by tech companies seeking power for their AI activities, the Defense Department, and even by fossil fuel companies who use comparable drilling technology for fracking.

The so-called Big Beautiful Bill passed by Congress in July that eliminates tax credits for wind and solar energy preserves tax credits for geothermal projects.

The world is warming and it’s happening faster

This summer has already seen unprecedented heat in many places.  It started with a record-breaking heat dome in June in the United States.  Alaska had its first-ever heat advisory that month.  Europe has seen triple-digit temperatures in cities like Paris, Madrid, and Rome and even in places like Austria, Sarjevo, Bulgaria, Croatia, and Serbia.  On June 28th, a temperature of 96.8 degrees was measured in Biasca, Switzerland.

According to the latest report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the world is getting hotter, faster.  Human-caused global warming is now increasing by 0.27 degrees Celsius per decade.  That rate was recorded at 0.2 degrees in the 1970s and has been increasing ever since.

Climate scientists have long predicted that the rate of warming in the atmosphere would speed up, which has been evident from measurements for quite a while.  But now, these trends that have mostly been seen in charts and graphs are playing a growing role in people’s lives.

Each increase in the global mean temperature brings about a relatively larger increase in atmospheric extremes that include powerful downpours and severe droughts and wildfires.  According to climate models, extreme rainfall intensifies by 7% with each degree Celsius of atmospheric warming.  But recent data indicates that such record-shattering events are increasing at double that rate.

The current US administration may not accept the reality of the changing climate, but the planet really doesn’t care what it believes.

Marine heatwaves are spreading

Marine heatwaves are spreading around the world

Sea surface temperatures broke records in 2024 and a quarter of the world’s oceans are experiencing temperatures that qualify as a marine heatwave.  A marine heatwave is a prolonged period during which ocean temperatures are significantly warmer than average for that specific location and time of year. 

Unusual heatwaves have occurred in all the major ocean basins around the planet in recent years and some have become so intense that they are being called super marine heatwaves.

The seas off the coasts of the UK and Ireland experienced an unusually intense and long-lasting marine heatwave starting in April.  Australia was recently struck by heatwaves on two coasts.

Hotter oceans are causing drastic changes to marine life, sea levels, and weather patterns.  Some of the most apparent casualties of ocean warming have been coral reefs.  About 84% of reefs worldwide experienced bleaching-level heat stress at some point between January 2023 and March 2025.

Excess heat in the oceans can affect weather patterns, making hurricanes more likely to rapidly intensify and become more destructive.

A recent study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences concluded that climate change has been responsible for the overwhelming majority of marine heatwaves in recent decades.

People are learning to forecast these events.  Eventually, parts of the ocean might enter a constant state of marine heatwave, at least by how it is defined today.  Studying what is going on in the oceans today may provide insights into the future of the world’s oceans and provide guidance on how to try to achieve different outcomes.

Extending the shelf life of produce

More than 30% of the world’s food is lost after it has been harvested.  That’s enough to feed more than a billion people.  Much of that loss is fruits and vegetables that go bad before they can be eaten.

Refrigeration is the most common way to preserve foods, but the energy and infrastructure required is not always available, especially in less affluent regions of the world.

Researchers at MIT and Singapore-based collaborators have demonstrated that they can extend the shelf life of harvested plants by injecting them with melatonin using biodegradable microneedles.

Silk microneedles are tiny, nontoxic, and biodegradable and represent a means of delivering nutrients to plants without triggering a stress response.

Melatonin is a natural hormone that plants already use.  Injecting it was shown to extend vegetables’ shelf life.  The tests used pak choy, an important Asian crop that is very perishable.  Untreated plants at room temperature yellowed within two or three days.  In contrast, treated plants stayed green for five days.  Overall, treated plants retained saleable value for 8 days.  Refrigerated plants had their shelf life extended considerably as well.  However, the most significant value of the technique is that it could enhance the shelf life of perishable produce like pak choy without needing access to refrigeration.

The dose of melatonin delivered to the plants is so low that it is fully metabolized by the crops, so it would not significantly increase the amount normally present in the food.  People would not ingest more melatonin than usual.  The researchers believe that their technique should work with all kinds of produce.

Can birds outfly climate change?

Birds cannot outfly climate change

As global temperatures continue to rise and ecosystems shift, animals are left with limited options. They must either adjust to the changing conditions in their habitats or relocate to cooler environments. For many species, neither choice is easy – or sometimes even possible.

Ecologists had long assumed birds were among the most adaptable species in a warming world simply because they can fly to higher altitudes or towards global poles. But a new study by researchers from Yale University found that even birds are struggling to stay ahead of rising global temperatures.

The study, which was recently published in the journal Nature Ecology and Evolution, analyzed 20 years of data from 406 bird species across North America. They found that while most birds did shift their ranges northward – by about 40 to 50 miles on average during the summer – the changes weren’t enough to keep up with the rapid pace of climate change.

Birds still experienced significant warming in their new areas when compared with temperatures in their original home range.  In fact, warming was about 1.35 degrees Celsius more in summer, and a striking 3.7 degrees more in winter. And some species, especially those with limited flight ranges or specific habitat needs, like the cactus wren, didn’t move at all.

Highly mobile birds like the blue-winged warbler did better, avoiding nearly two degrees of warming by traveling more than 100 miles north. But even they couldn’t completely dodge the heat.

The findings raise serious concerns about whether less mobile species can survive in a warming world, and underscores the urgent need to better understand and manage those most vulnerable to climate-driven extinction.

Solutions for cleaner air

Paris has waged a successful battle against air pollution

Air pollution is a problem for most of the world’s cities.  Many cities in India and China continue to face major public health crises due to their polluted air.  American cities also don’t escape from polluted air.  Californian cities still struggle with smog despite decades of effort to reduce it.  But one major city that has waged a successful battle against air pollution is Paris, France.

Over the past 20 years, Paris has transformed its air by trading automobile roads for bike lanes, adding green spaces, and eliminating 50,000 parking spaces.

According to independent air quality tracking, levels of fine particulate matter in Paris have decreased 55% since 2005 and nitrogen dioxide levels have fallen 50%.  A combination of regulations and public policies including steps to limit traffic and ban the most polluting vehicles have produced these results. 

Despite pushback from various sources such as car owners’ associations, suburban commuters, and right-leaning politicians, Parisians have continued to pursue cleaner air policies.  In April, Parisians voted to turn an additional 500 streets over to pedestrians.  Last year, Paris sharply increased parking fees for SUVs, forcing drivers to pay three times more than they would for smaller cars. 

Ambitious policymaking can directly improve health in large cities.  As one former advisor to the city explains, the French capital has developed “an urban policy based on well-being.”

Record forest loss

A record amount of forest was lost last year

The world lost a record amount of forests last year.  The biggest factor for the unprecedented losses were wildfires that raged around the world.

According to the annual update by the University of Maryland and the World Resources Institute, pristine rainforests alone lost 17 million acres, which was nearly twice as much as in the previous year.  Overall, the world lost the equivalent of 18 soccer fields of forested land every minute last year.

Over time, agriculture has been the primary cause of forest losses, but last year, for the first time since record-keeping began, fires were the leading cause, accounting for nearly half of all the destruction.

With respect to the climate, wildfires emitted over 4 billion tons of greenhouse gasses, which is more than four times the amount generated by air travel in 2023.

Land clearing for agriculture, cattle farming, and other purposes was by no means in decline last year.  In fact, it rose by 14%, which was the sharpest increase in almost a decade.  This trend could permanently transform critical natural areas, unleashing large amounts of carbon, intensifying climate change, and fueling even more extreme fires.

Forests are a major contributor to the natural storing of carbon dioxide.  Intact tropical forests are especially effective at storing carbon.

Brazil has the largest area of tropical forest and it accounted for 42% of all tropical primary forest loss in 2024.  Fires fueled by the worst drought on record caused two thirds of that loss, more than a sixfold increase over the previous year.

Sun powered carbon capture

Using solar power to help capture carbon

As the world struggles to implement technologies and find the political will to reduce carbon emissions, there are also ongoing efforts to find ways to capture carbon from emitting sources and from the atmosphere itself.  After capturing carbon dioxide, there is then the need to safely store it or make use of it.

Current methods for capturing and then releasing carbon dioxide are expensive and energy intensive.  In fact, some methods even require the use of fossil fuels.  Recently, researchers at Cornell University have developed a method for capturing carbon dioxide that is powered by sunlight.

The Cornell method mimics the mechanisms that plants use to store carbon which involves using sunlight to make a reactive enol molecule that grabs carbon dioxide.  

Existing chemical-based carbon capture techniques make use of amines, which are organic ammonia-derived compounds that react selectively with carbon dioxide.  But amines are not stable in the presence of oxygen and don’t last, which necessitates the energy-intensive production of more and more amines.

The Cornell method uses the same method that the plant enzyme RuBisCo uses in photosynthesis.  It is based on an inexpensive sorbent material that is capable of a high rate of carbon capture.

The researchers tested the system using flue samples from Cornell’s Combined Heat and Power Building, an on-campus power plant that burns natural gas.  The system was successful in isolating carbon dioxide.

Ultimately, they would like to stage the reaction on what looks like a solar panel, but one that would capture carbon instead of generating electricity.

The cicadas are coming

After hiding underground for the last 17 years, billions of cicadas are taking to the skies this summer.  This batch of insects, known as Brood XIV, will cover more of the U.S. than any other 17-year brood.  New York and at least 13 other states – Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, and parts of Indiana are being serenaded by the sound of cicadas in May and June.

There are 15 broods of periodical cicadas that emerge every 13 or 17 years.  They come out when soil temperatures reach 64 degrees.  Around the world there are annual cicadas while periodical cicadas can only be found in the eastern United States.

Once the insects emerge, they will issue their noisy, chirping mating calls for just a few weeks before they lay eggs and die.  The offspring from the eggs will burrow underground and remain dormant or in the nymph stage feeding on tree roots for another 17 years.  Surfacing in vast numbers is a way to overwhelm predators and ensure that at least some cicadas survive to reproduce. 

The emergence of these insects provides a bounty of food to squirrels, lizards, birds, and other creatures.  A study found that once cicadas emerge, the population of cuckoos, blue jays, and red-bellied woodpeckers grows.

As the climate changes, the timing of cicada cycles may also change.  Warmer weather will lead to cicadas emerging earlier in the year.  Eventually, even the time they spend underground may shorten.

Saharan dust and solar power

The world is a big place but even things that are far away can have serious local consequences.  The effects of distant Canadian wildfires on air quality in Florida is a good example.

Europe is increasingly becoming reliant on solar energy to meet its targets for climate change mitigation and energy security.   According to new research by four Hungarian universities, mineral dust carried on the wind from the Sahara Desert is not only reducing electricity generation from solar power across Europe but it is also making it harder to predict what gets generated.

The Sahara releases billions of tons of fine dust into the atmosphere each year.  Tens of millions of tons reach European skies where the tiny particles scatter and absorb sunlight, reduce the amount of light reaching the surface, and even promote cloud formation.   All of these things reduce the output of photovoltaic systems.

In addition, conventional weather forecasting tools don’t consider the effects of Saharan dust events, so that scheduling of solar power for the energy system becomes less reliable.  Incorporating these events into new forecast models will be essential.

Apart from the atmospheric effects of the dust, there are also long-term impacts due to dust contaminating and eroding the physical infrastructure of solar panels thereby further reducing their efficiency and increasing maintenance costs.

Over time, south-to-north transport of Saharan dust is likely to become more pronounced due to a steeper thermal gradient.  Currently, the quantities of atmospheric dust, the dynamics of its transport, and the physical properties of the dust itself are not very well understood.  Understanding these things will be crucial for Europe’s energy future.

A biostimulant for wheat

Developing a biostimulant for wheat to boost crop yields

Feeding a global population projected to reach nearly 10 billion by mid-century is a massive challenge.  Wheat provides a fifth of the calories in the global human diet and is a significant source of protein, minerals, vitamins, and fiber.  Finding ways to increase the yield of wheat crops has great value.  However, wheat has complex genetics, which makes it difficult to improve yields by traditional breeding methods or even by genetic engineering.

Researchers at Oxford University and the nearby Rosalind Franklin Institute have developed a biostimulant that can deliver increased wheat yields of up to 12%.  It is applied as a spray and a four-year study in Argentina and Mexico demonstrated that it delivers major yield improvements irrespective of weather conditions.

The biostimulant is based on trehalose 6-phosphate (T6P), which is a natural molecule that regulates the plant equivalent of blood sugar.  T6P prompts plants to produce more starch and increases the rate of photosynthesis.

Naturally occurring T6P cannot be applied topically because it cannot cross cell membranes.  The researchers developed a membrane-permeable precursor of T6P that releases T6P into a plant in the presence of sunlight.

The biostimulant can be manufactured on an industrial scale and would be inexpensive to use. 

The researchers have created SugaROx, a spinout company whose mission is “to increase the productivity, resilience, sustainability, and profitability of crop production” using active ingredients inspired by powerful natural plant molecules.

Climate change poses all sorts of issues for the aviation industry

The aviation industry is a powerful force in the global economy.  In fact, according to some estimates, the industry transports the equivalent of nearly half the world’s population every year.  But the world’s airports were largely designed for an older era – a cooler one.

As air warms, it becomes less dense, which makes it harder for airplanes to generate lift, which is the force that enables them to fly.

According to a new study by scientists from the University of Reading in the U.K., rising temperatures due to climate change may force aircraft at some airports to reduce passenger numbers in the coming decades.

The research team examined how warmer air affects aircraft performance during takeoff at 30 sites across Europe.  The study, which was recently published in the journal Aerospace, focused on the Airbus A320, which is a common aircraft used for short and medium-distance flights across Europe.

By the 2060s, the research team found that some airports with shorter runways may need to reduce their maximum take-off weight by the equivalent of approximately 10 passengers per flight during summer months.

Of the sites included in the study, Chios in Greece, Pantelleria and Rome Ciampino in Italy, and San Sebastian in Spain will be the four most affected popular tourist destinations.

Climate change is also making air travel increasingly turbulent, and the aviation industry itself remains a growing contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions. 

Taking meaningful action to curb greenhouse gas emissions, including those from the aviation industry, is one of the most crucial ways to mitigate global climate change.

More urban vegetation could prevent many heat-related deaths around the world

Temperatures have been steadily rising around the world as a result of the increased greenhouse gas emissions from human activities.  This warming trend has led to more frequent and intense heat waves, droughts, and other extreme weather events.  Rising temperatures are also impacting human health, leading to increased risks of heat-related illnesses and a higher number of fatalities during extreme heat events.

One simple but effective way to reduce the health risks from extreme heat is to increase urban vegetation.  According to new research led by scientists from Monash University in Australia, increasing urban vegetation by 30% could save more than one-third of all heat-related deaths.  The study, which was recently published in The Lancet Planetary Health, examined more than 11,000 urban areas and found that increasing greenery could have saved up to 1.16 million lives worldwide between 2000 and 2019.

The impact of increasing urban vegetation on heat-related deaths varies by climate, greenness, socioeconomic, and demographic factors, with the greatest benefits seen in Southern Asia, Eastern Europe, and Eastern Asia. 

Vegetation has a cooling effect on temperature.  Vegetation helps regulate the Earth’s climate by absorbing carbon dioxide during photosynthesis, which helps to reduce greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Vegetation also cools the environment through shading, moisture release, and evapotranspiration, which reduces temperatures and mitigates heat-related health risks.

Incorporating more vegetation into urban areas is a powerful solution to mitigate the impacts of climate change and protect human health.

Finding peatlands

Peatlands are a special kind of wetland that have enormous potential for helping to mitigate climate change.  They are great at capturing carbon because their constantly soggy soils deprive decomposer organisms of the oxygen they need to break down dead plants.  Living plants absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and incorporate the carbon into their tissues.  When plants die, decomposers like bacteria digest the plant matter and release the carbon dioxide back into the atmosphere.

Researchers from the University of California Santa Cruz found that the average per-area carbon densities in peatlands in Colombia are four to ten times higher than those in the Amazon rainforest.  This agrees with other studies around the world.  On a global scale, peatlands cover only 3% of land areas but store more carbon than all the world’s trees.  Peatlands are unsung heroes helping to reduce the impact of fossil fuel emissions.

Peatlands can only store carbon if they remain constantly wet.  When they are drained for agriculture or other development, decomposer organisms get back to work digesting organic matter and releasing carbon dioxide back into the atmosphere.

A major challenge in protecting peatland is finding them.  They are often hard to distinguish from other types of wetlands. 

The Santa Cruz researchers have been identifying and locating peatlands in Colombia, where decades of civil war had made many parts of the country inaccessible for research.  Finding and protecting peatlands there and in many other places around the world is an important task in the battle against climate change.

Transparent wood

Plastics are pretty much everywhere in the modern world including places we want them to be and places where we don’t.  Conventional plastics are not biodegradable and instead cause increasing problems wherever they end up after their useful life.  As a result, there are global efforts to find environmentally friendly replacements for petroleum-based plastics.

An interesting candidate for replacing many types of plastic is transparent wood.  Transparent wood is a man-made material derived from natural wood.  Wood has three components:  cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin.  Transparent wood is created by removing the lignin and hemicellulose, leaving behind a porous, paper-like network of cellulose.  It is transparent but lacks structural strength.  In the past, clear materials like epoxies have been added to produce a strong, transparent material:  transparent wood.  But because of the epoxy – itself a form of plastic – the resultant material was non-biodegradable.

Researchers at Kennesaw State University in Georgia have developed a method for producing transparent wood that replaces epoxies with an egg white and rice extract mixture along with a curing agent called diethylenetriamine.  The end product is a semi-transparent form of wood that is biodegradable. 

The researchers also incorporated silver nanowires into samples of their transparent wood.  This enabled the wood to conduct electricity and could be useful in wearable sensors or as coatings for solar cells.  There is additional research needed to improve the properties of this transparent wood, but a plastic replacement made from natural and inexpensive materials could be quite valuable.
