Pollution particles emitted by diesel cars and trucks, coal-fired power plants, factories, primitive cook stoves, and the burning of forests are major contributors to the pervasive air pollution that plagues many cities and regions of the world.  In India and China, such pollution leads to hundreds of thousands of deaths each year.   And countries around the world are working hard to reduce pollution.

The Changing Face Of Air Pollution

Air pollution in cities is a global problem that has reached crisis proportions in places like China and India.   In our country, since the Clean Air Act was passed in 1970, there has been a great deal of effort exerted in controlling pollution from vehicles.  A combination of pollution-limiting changes to engines, fuels, and pollution control systems has significantly reduced the amount of air pollution associated with the transportation sector.

CO2 Emissions Stalled

December 13, 2017 By EarthWise Leave a Comment

https://earthwiseradio.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/EW-12-13-17-CO2-Emissions-Stalled.mp3

For the third year in a row, global emissions of carbon dioxide have remained unchanged.  This indicates that efforts to reduce emissions have had an effect, but that there is much more to be done.  It is essential to reduce emissions, not just cap them.

Delhi, the capital city of India, has always been a city bursting at the seams.  With over 19 million people, heavy industry, growing numbers of vehicles, and choking amounts of road dust, Delhi suffers from some of the worst air pollution in the world.  It is a situation the country has been struggling with for years.

There is deservedly a great deal of focus on the effects that carbon pollution is having upon the climate and most countries around the world are working to reduce their emissions.   However, even if climate effects were not a serious threat to humanity, pollution is a deadly menace to human health.

Ditching Gas And Diesel Cars

Electric cars represent only a tiny fraction of the overall auto market.  The numbers are growing, most certainly, but they are still quite small in most places.   The recent start of production of the Tesla Model 3 has attracted quite a bit of attention to electric cars, but in many countries, there is much more to the story than just media buzz about a new car.

Natural Mosquito Repellents

With summer comes mosquitoes and our desire to keep them away from us.  The most common repellents are based on the chemical DEET, which unfortunately has been found to have several health and safety problems.   Up to 15% of DEET is absorbed through the skin directly into the bloodstream.  Diethyl-meta-toluamide, the chemical name for DEET, has been shown to have a variety of toxic effects.  Fortunately, it turns out that there are some natural alternatives which may be as effective as DEET, or possibly even more effective than DEET in keeping mosquitoes away from us.

India’s Air Pollution

May 3, 2017 By EarthWise

https://earthwiseradio.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/EW-05-03-17-Indias-Air-Pollution.mp3

Poor air quality is a major problem worldwide.  Exposure to air pollution is linked to the premature deaths of an estimated 6.5 million people every year.  This makes air pollution the fourth largest threat to human health, trailing only high blood pressure, dietary risks, and smoking.

Tiger Poaching

Last year, tiger poaching in India jumped to its highest levels in 15 years.   The spike was the result of killings by gangs of poachers, tigers being snared by locals trying to trap other animals for food, and by cutbacks in anti-poaching efforts because of budget cuts.

Snow leopards are majestic animals native to Central Asia.  They roam the region’s rugged terrain, from Afghanistan to Kazakhstan and Russia in the north, and to India and China in the east.  Snow leopards are known for their thick white coat of fur with ringed black and brown spots.  These markings help camouflage the animals from their prey.  But the camouflage does little to protect snow leopards from one of their biggest threats: humans.

Filoviruses have devastating effects on people and primates, as evidenced by the 2014 Ebola outbreak in West Africa. For nearly 40 years, preventing spillovers has been hampered by an inability to pinpoint which wildlife species harbor and spread the viruses.

When we think of vultures, we picture big, ugly birds circling over a carcass in the desert.  They are a stereotypical harbinger of death.  But in many parts of the world, vultures are in danger of disappearing.  Our knee-jerk reaction might well be “good riddance”, but as is the case for pretty much all participants in ecosystems, vultures have an important role to play.  And when they aren’t around to play that role, bad things can happen.

Dangerous Air

Much of the public discourse about pollution is focused on the long-term consequences of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.  There are still some who doubt that such consequences are really in the offing or that our actions are responsible in any case.
