Hydrogen is touted to be the fuel of the future, particularly for cars.  But a more acccurate view of it is that hydrogen is an energy storage medium.  And the most promising form of energy to store using hydrogen is solar energy.

The Restoration Economy

Deforestation is one of the largest contributors to climate change.  Forests cover about 30% of the world’s land area and are a crucial sink for carbon dioxide.   Over time, we have been steadily reducing the amount of forest in the world to obtain wood and timber, open up farmland, build towns and cities, produce paper, make palm oil, and mine for minerals.

Predators and scavengers are widely persecuted by people because they are often harmful to property, livestock, and human beings.  Nonetheless, research has shown that many of these animals play important roles in ecosystems and their removal can be quite harmful.

Biomimicry Is Big

February 8, 2018 By EarthWise Leave a Comment

https://earthwiseradio.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/EW-02-08-18-Biomimicry-is-Big.mp3

Biomimicry is learning from and then emulating nature’s forms, processes, and ecosystems to create more sustainable designs.   Mother Nature is already the inspiration for countless products and designs ranging from Velcro copied from plant burs to the shape of wind turbines modeled after whale fins.  There are wetsuits inspired by beaver pelts and office buildings that copy termite dens.  Increasingly, innovators are looking at nature for designs in architecture, chemistry, agriculture, energy, health, transportation, computing, and even for the structure of organizations and cities.

Coral reefs are essential for much of marine life and are the basis of many commercial fisheries.  In places from Florida to Australia, they are major tourist attractions.  Estimates are that the economic impact of coral reefs is more than $375 billion a year.  And apart from all of that, they are some of the most beautiful places on the planet.

A Record Drop In Coal Consumption

August 2, 2017 By EarthWise

https://earthwiseradio.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/EW-08-02-17-Coal-Consumption.mp3

Global consumption of coal dropped by 1.7% last year.  This is a major change considering that it had increased by an average of 1.9% per year from 2005 to 2015.   China, which accounts for about half of the coal burned in the world, used 1.6% less in 2016, as compared to an increase of 3.7% per year over the previous 11 years.

Global weather patterns are influenced by environmental conditions in places around the world.  One of the world’s major weather creators is the Sahara Desert.  The Sahara is the largest hot desert in the world.  The only larger deserts of any sort are in the polar extremes of the planet and are thus not hot deserts at all.

The Methanol Economy

June 8, 2017 By EarthWise

https://earthwiseradio.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/EW-06-08-17-The-Methanol-Economy.mp3

The methanol economy is an idea that was promoted by the late Nobel-prize-winning chemist George Olah since the 1990s.  The idea is to replace fossil fuels with methanol for energy storage, ground transportation fuel, and raw material for hydrocarbon-based products.   Methanol is the simplest alcohol and can be produced from a wide variety of sources ranging from fossil fuels to agricultural products to just carbon dioxide.  Methanol can be used directly as a fuel or it can be reformed into hydrogen, which can then itself be used as a fuel.

Renewable energy may be under attack by the federal government these days, but one federal agency is making great progress on using the sun’s energy to split hydrogen from water.   The National Renewable Energy Laboratory, located in Golden, Colorado, recently highlighted two initiatives aimed at the production of renewable hydrogen.

Cows And The Environment

There are many environmental problems associated with ruminant livestock and these problems continue to grow as the demand for meat-rich diets increases around the world.  One of the biggest problems is that cows emit methane through eructation (or belching) as they chew their cud.   Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas, some 25 times more potent at trapping heat than carbon dioxide.  More than a quarter of all human-originated methane going into the atmosphere comes from raising livestock.

The North-Rhine Westphalia region of Germany was the crucible of that country’s industrial revolution and it still generates a third of Germany’s power, much of it using aging coal plants.   However, Germany’s national energy transition program is pushing the country away from coal and other fossil fuels and towards renewable energy sources.

Combating climate change is a bit like treating a disease whose early stage symptoms are not very severe.  People are not as motivated as they should be.   Businesses have to comply with new regulations and spend money on new technologies, which seems like a losing proposition.

Part of Hillary Clinton’s proposed energy plan is a pledge that half a billion additional solar panels will be installed by the end of her first term if she is elected President this year.  This number sounds wildly ambitious.  It is even realistic?

Energy Intensity

September 7, 2016 By WAMC WEB

Every stage of civilization is characterized by its use of energy.   From burning wood to steam engines to our electrified society, energy is behind everything we do.  Over time, human society has become increasingly energy intensive.  As our standards of living have improved and as we overcome the effects of weather – either cold or warm – it takes more and more energy to live the lives we lead.
