Climate Change And Jobs

December 5, 2016 By EarthWise

https://earthwiseradio.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/EW-12-05-16-Climate-Change-and-Jobs.mp3

Combating climate change is a bit like treating a disease whose early stage symptoms are not very severe.  People are not as motivated as they should be.   Businesses have to comply with new regulations and spend money on new technologies, which seems like a losing proposition.

Energy At Our Feet

November 15, 2016 By WAMC WEB

There are both big ideas and small ideas for generating electricity from renewable sources.  For example, even though there are now gigantic solar energy farms producing vast amounts of electricity, there are also plans to embed solar technology in the windows of homes and businesses to capture even more of the sun’s energy.

Australia On The Run

We’ve all come to take for granted the ability of GPS systems to help us find our way around our cities, the countryside and, for that matter, the world in general.  Software interacting with Global Positioning Satellites allows us to pinpoint our location on the Earth with remarkable accuracy.  At least, as long as places on Earth stay put.  But the problem is that they actually don’t.

The Economics Of Renewable Energy

October 17, 2016 By WAMC WEB

https://earthwiseradio.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/EW-10-17-16-Economics-of-Renewable-Energy.mp3

Very few people are against the use of renewable energy sources like solar and wind power in principle.  It is hard to argue against generating power from resources that are free and plentiful.  The main knock against renewable power sources has been that they cost too much compared with conventional, fossil-fuel technologies.

Wave Energy In The United States

October 12, 2016 By WAMC WEB

https://earthwiseradio.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/EW-10-12-16-Wave-Energy-in-the-US.mp3

By some estimates, America’s oceans could provide enough electric power to meet a quarter of the country’s energy needs.  Despite this, until recently the contribution to the U.S. electric grid from marine energy has been exactly zero.

Disruptive Light Bulb Technology

September 27, 2016 By WAMC WEB

Investment companies like to talk about the disruptive nature of technologies and how they change industries while simultaneously changing our lives.  The growing emphasis on a low-carbon economy has spotlighted a number of technologies as being disruptive in their industry sectors.  One hears this frequently when discussing wind and solar power.  Clearly, these two technologies are changing the face of the utility industry, but at least at present, they still represent a fairly small fraction of the overall business.

A Water Superpower

In 2008, Israel was on the verge of catastrophe.  A decade-long drought in the Fertile Crescent of the Middle East was scorching the area.  Israel’s largest source of fresh water, the Sea of Galilee, had dropped to within inches of the so-called black line at which point irreversible salt infiltration would flood the lake and ruin it forever.

Electric Cars And Climate Change

September 19, 2016 By WAMC WEB

https://earthwiseradio.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/EW-09-19-16-Electric-Cars-and-Climate-Change.mp3

Electric cars are gradually becoming more popular, but there are still real concerns about their driving range, the availability of charging infrastructure, and their price.  Adoption of the technology is still rather slow.

Solar Power 24/7

September 5, 2016 By WAMC WEB

https://earthwiseradio.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/EW-09-05-16-Solar-Power-24-7.mp3

The biggest challenge facing both solar and wind power sources is that they don’t produce power around the clock; they only work when the sun is shining or the wind is blowing.  As a result, they don’t quite measure up to the requirement for power on demand.

Saving The Sea From Salt

The Persian Gulf along with the Red and Mediterranean seas are getting saltier all the time because of the waste products of desalination.   The United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain and Oman account for 45% of the world’s desalination capacity.  And the byproduct of desalination is brine, which is twice as salty as seawater.   Even advanced desalination plants produce two cubic meters of waste brine for every one cubic meter of clean water.

Testing The Ocean Cleanup Array

It’s no secret that our oceans are full of plastic.  Plastic trash can be found on up to 88% of the oceans’ surfaces, with most of the debris concentrated in the top two meters of water.  The plastics gather in certain areas of the ocean due to the swirling nature of ocean currents, known as gyres.  Some of these concentrations, such as the infamous Great Pacific Garbage Patch, are so large they can be seen from space.

Big Data + Technology = Improved Global Health

June 20, 2016 By WAMC WEB

https://earthwiseradio.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/EW-06-20-16-Early-Warning-Disease-System.mp3

Scientists are calling for the creation of a global early warning system for infectious diseases. Such a system would use computer models to tap into environmental, epidemiological, and molecular data – gathering the intelligence needed to forecast where disease risk is high and what actions could prevent outbreaks or contain epidemics.

One Million Roofs

June 14, 2016 By WAMC WEB

https://earthwiseradio.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/EW-06-14-16-One-Million-Roofs.mp3

Sometime early in May, the United States installed its one millionth solar energy system.  Achieving this milestone took the solar industry about 40 years to accomplish.  Because of the phenomenal growth of solar power in this country, industry experts predict that it will only take two more years to reach the second million and there are predictions that by the year 2025, there will be one million new installations in the U.S. each year.

Storing Energy With Rocks

June 2, 2016 By WAMC WEB

https://earthwiseradio.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/EW-06-02-16-Storing-Energy-with-Rocks.mp3

Energy storage is hot topic because more and more electricity is being generated from renewable sources like solar power and wind power that can’t operate all the time because the sun doesn’t always shine and the wind doesn’t always blow.  So we need ways to store surplus energy when it is produced and be able to use it later when it is needed.
