By the year 2050, scientists predict that there will be two billion more people to feed in the world.  And climate change isn’t making that task any simpler.  From extreme weather events to rising global temperatures, climate change is expected to affect the types of food we grow, and to negatively affect the food production needed to feed the growing population.

The Telangana region of India has struggled with extreme weather patterns attributed to climate change.  Extended periods of drought, heatwaves, and unpredictable heavy rainfalls have led to crop failures, mounting debt, and a heavy human toll.  More than 3,000 farmers committed suicide in Telangana during a three-year drought.

Traffic Jams In The Jet Stream

https://earthwiseradio.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/EW-07-13-18-Traffic-Jams-in-the-Jet-Stream.mp3

Many extreme weather events are associated with unusual behavior by the jet stream.   Jet streams are the global air currents that circle the earth.  The meandering and speed changes in the jet stream affect weather and also play a big role in how long it takes aircraft to make their way across the country.  The behavior that leads to extreme weather events is known as “blocking” in which the meandering jet stream stops weather systems from moving eastward.

It sure seems like extreme weather is increasingly common:  floods, droughts, extreme rainfall, powerful snowstorms, hurricanes and so on.  But we tend to focus on recent events and often give them undue emphasis.  So, it is reasonable to ask whether extreme weather really is more common these days.

The Arctic has been experiencing record warm temperatures and record low sea ice levels.  During February, there were nine days in a row with temperatures averaging 27 degrees above normal and often above freezing.  Over the previous 20 years, there were only two previous readings above freezing in February – once in 2011 and once last year.

We often hear the terms “100-year” and “500-year” used to describe instances of extreme flooding.  But as the climate changes, these extreme weather events are expected to become more frequent.  So what’s with the terminology then anyways?

Excess nitrogen in the environment is a big problem.  The most visible aspect of the problem is the spread of toxic algae blooms in oceans, lakes and other bodies of water.  But there are other effects as well such as unwanted alterations to ecosystems.

The average global temperature is one degree Celsius above pre-industrial levels.   There has long been a goal to limit global warming to no more than 2 degrees above those levels.  But the Paris climate conference has set a more ambitious goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees.   What difference would that half a degree make?

Climate Change And The Global Food System

December 24, 2015 By WAMC WEB

https://earthwiseradio.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/EW-12-24-15-Global-Food-System.mp3

One of the most troubling aspects of global climate change is its potential impact on the production, distribution and quality of food.   A report issued at the 2015 Paris Climate Conference focused on identifying climate change impacts on global food security.  Food security is the ability of people to obtain and use sufficient amounts of safe and nutritious food.  Even without the impact of climate change, food security is a challenge because of increasing population, poverty, and changing eating habits.

There are starting to be a lot of news reports about a strong El Niño being on the way later this year.  El Niño is a weather phenomenon that occurs in the eastern tropical Pacific every two to seven years.  East-to-west trade winds weaken and ocean surface temperatures go up.  The result impacts the weather throughout the Pacific region.
