Fencing Out People And Animals

February 2, 2017 By EarthWise

The flood of refugees from the Middle East and Africa has prompted governments in the Balkan countries to erect hundreds of miles of border fences.  Countries like Slovenia have put up razor-wire security fences to stem the tide of migrants.  These border fences are built with little if any consideration of the environmental impacts on wildlife.

Can Polar Bears Be Saved?

January 30, 2017 By EarthWise

https://earthwiseradio.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/EW-01-30-17-Can-Polar-Bears-Be-Saved.mp3

Climate change is posing a major threat to polar bear survival.  The polar bear, whose native range lies largely within the Arctic Circle, depends on sea ice for nearly all of its life cycle functions.  And rising temperatures are causing that sea ice to disappear.

Widespread Local Extinctions

January 17, 2017 By EarthWise

https://earthwiseradio.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/EW-01-17-17-Widespread-Local-Extinctions.mp3

Plants and animals have evolved over time to live in specific environmental niches.  As the climate warms, parts of the ranges in which they live may no longer offer the conditions under which they can thrive.  Species can respond to these changes in three ways:   they can adapt to new conditions by undergoing niche shifts; they can relocate to better conditions, such as by moving to higher elevations or latitudes; or they can locally go extinct.

Vulnerable to Extinction

According to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, the world’s tallest land mammal may be in trouble.  Giraffe populations have declined dramatically over the past 30 years, falling to approximately 97,000 from 163,000 in the 1980s.

Wildlife Corridors

It is widely thought that we are in the midst of the 6th great mass extinction of species on Earth and, unlike the previous ones that were caused by things like asteroid impacts or ice ages, this one is caused by us.  Our impact on the climate, on natural resources, on landscapes and habitats, and more, has wreaked havoc on ecosystems across the globe.

According to a new report from the World Wildlife Fund, the world’s animal populations have suffered widespread population declines in the last half century.  And thousands of species are now scrambling to survive.

According to a recent study published in the journal Global Change Biology, rising CO2 levels in the ocean can disrupt the sensory systems of fish and can even make them swim toward predators and ignore the sounds that normally deter them from risky habitats.

Wilderness Lost

October 10, 2016 By WAMC WEB

https://earthwiseradio.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/EW-10-10-16-Wilderness-Lost.mp3

Wilderness areas are strongholds for biodiversity.  They buffer and regulate local climates, and they support many of the world’s most politically and economically marginalized communities.  While there is a great deal of attention being paid to the loss of species around the world, there is relatively little focus on the loss of entire ecosystems.  Simply put, wilderness is on the decline, and it has been ever since human civilization began its inexorable expansion.

Farming, forestry, mining and recreation are the primary vocations in rural America.  In coastal areas like Maine, fishing joins the list.  And for Maine, commercial fishing has long been a major engine for the economy.

Size Matters

One of the crowning achievements for wildlife protection in the US was the establishment of the National Wildlife Refuge system in the 1930s, when the populations of waterfowl were perilously low. Refuges provided breeding and migratory habitat that has allowed a remarkable recovery of many species of ducks and geese.

In 2010, an explosion on the BP-owned Deepwater Horizon drilling rig released more than 200 million gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico.  Some of the oil was recovered, burned, or dispersed at sea, while some washed up onto the shorelines of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida.

Grizzly bears, also known as North American brown bears, once roamed much of North America and symbolized the continent’s untamed wilderness.  But hunters and trappers nearly wiped them out across most of the Lower 48 states by the late 1800s.

Cod And Global Warming

December 3, 2015 By WAMC WEB

https://earthwiseradio.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/EW-12-03-15-Cod-and-Global-Warming.mp3

Atlantic cod has been the basis of a major fishing industry in the Gulf of Maine for centuries and is a key species in the local ecosystem.  Overfishing decimated the population of cod and in 2010, fisheries managers imposed a series of restrictions on harvesting the fish in order to try to help the species to rebound.

Many ecologists believe that the sixth mass extinction is underway.  Whereas previous mass extinctions have been associated with cataclysmic events like asteroid strikes, this one is said to be associated with the impact of humanity on nature.
