A Hydrogen-Powered Train

June 5, 2017 By EarthWise

https://earthwiseradio.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/EW-06-05-17-A-Hydrogen-Powered-Train.mp3

It seems like something out of a science fiction movie, but a nearly silent train that glides along its tracks emitting nothing but water is a reality.   In March, Germany conducted successful tests of the world’s first “Hydrail,” which is a hydrogen-powered, zero-emission train.

Deforestation in the Amazon Rainforest

May 30, 2017 By EarthWise

https://earthwiseradio.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/EW-05-30-17-Deforestation-in-the-Amazon.mp3

The Amazon rainforest is the biggest in the world, larger than the next two biggest combined.  It covers over 3 million square miles, roughly the size of the lower 48 states.  For this reason, it functions as a critical sink for carbon in the atmosphere.

Plastic In The Arctic

https://earthwiseradio.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/EW-05-23-17-Plastic-in-the-Arctic.mp3

On several occasions, we have talked about the enormous amount of plastic that litters the world’s oceans.  Bits of bottles, bags, toys, fishing nets and other objects collect in gyres, or so-called garbage patches, which have grown and grown over the decades.

Cows And The Environment

May 18, 2017 By EarthWise

https://earthwiseradio.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/EW-05-18-17-Cows-and-the-Environment.mp3

There are many environmental problems associated with ruminant livestock and these problems continue to grow as the demand for meat-rich diets increases around the world.  One of the biggest problems is that cows emit methane through eructation (or belching) as they chew their cud.   Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas, some 25 times more potent at trapping heat than carbon dioxide.  More than a quarter of all human-originated methane going into the atmosphere comes from raising livestock.

There’s ample evidence over the past decade or so that Americans are gradually changing their diets, driven by health concerns among other factors.  But there’s one change that really stands out.  According to a study by the Natural Resources Defense Council, Americans have sliced their beef consumption by 19% between 2005 and 2014.

India’s Air Pollution

May 3, 2017 By EarthWise

https://earthwiseradio.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/EW-05-03-17-Indias-Air-Pollution.mp3

Poor air quality is a major problem worldwide.  Exposure to air pollution is linked to the premature deaths of an estimated 6.5 million people every year.  This makes air pollution the fourth largest threat to human health, trailing only high blood pressure, dietary risks, and smoking.

Hydrogen On Demand

April 28, 2017 By EarthWise

https://earthwiseradio.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/EW-04-28-17-Hydrogen-on-Demand.mp3

Researchers at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology have developed a new method for producing hydrogen from water using solar energy.  If successfully developed, their approach would make it possible to produce hydrogen in a centralized manner at the point of sale such as at a fueling station for hydrogen-powered cars.

The Great Barrier Reef

April 27, 2017 By EarthWise

https://earthwiseradio.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/EW-04-27-17-The-Great-Barrier-Reef.mp3

According to a new paper published in the journal Nature, global warming has damaged huge sections of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.  The authors of the paper warn that the resilience of the reef – which is the world’s largest living structure – is waning rapidly.

One of the arguments some people make when discussing human causes of climate change is that people can’t cause such massive changes.  However, there is a long historical record of human-driven ecological and climatic change in Europe, North America and New Zealand, among other places.

Pesticides And Food Insecurity

April 19, 2017 By EarthWise

https://earthwiseradio.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/EW-04-19-17-Pesticides-and-Food-Insecurity.mp3

A newly released report by the United Nations takes a strong stance against the use of industrial agrochemicals, saying that they are not necessary for feeding the world.  The continued use of pesticides at the rate the world currently does in fact can have very detrimental consequences.

According to the United Nations World Tourism Organization, more than one billion international tourists travel the world each year.  Tourism has become a powerful and transformative force for many millions of people.  But all this travel is not as positive for the planet.  To that end, the luxury travel network Virtuoso assembled a short, simple list everyone can follow to reduce the environmental impact of their travel.

Tires From Trees

March 16, 2017 By EarthWise

https://earthwiseradio.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/EW-03-16-17-Tires-from-Trees.mp3

Car tires are generally considered environmentally unfriendly because they are predominantly made from fossil fuels.  Natural rubber is generally not used anymore; most tires are made from isoprene, which is chemically very like rubber but is produced by thermally breaking apart molecules in petroleum in a process called cracking.  The isoprene is separated out and purified and then reacted to form the artificial rubber that is the major component in car tires.  The tires eventually end up discarded in giant piles that represent one of our biggest waste disposal problems.

Clean Coal For Real

February 20, 2017 By EarthWise

https://earthwiseradio.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/EW-02-20-17-Clean-Coal-for-Real.mp3

We have heard the term “clean coal” for years, mostly from politicians and in coal company advertising.  The concept sounds good:  burn coal but don’t produce carbon dioxide emissions.  While there have been various small-scale tests of technologies to accomplish this, it has not actually been a viable option for the power industry.

Widespread Local Extinctions

January 17, 2017 By EarthWise

https://earthwiseradio.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/EW-01-17-17-Widespread-Local-Extinctions.mp3

Plants and animals have evolved over time to live in specific environmental niches.  As the climate warms, parts of the ranges in which they live may no longer offer the conditions under which they can thrive.  Species can respond to these changes in three ways:   they can adapt to new conditions by undergoing niche shifts; they can relocate to better conditions, such as by moving to higher elevations or latitudes; or they can locally go extinct.

Climate Engineering

With the forthcoming administration change, it appears that the federal government is likely to start backing away from tackling climate change and may even be obstructive towards efforts to mitigate the growing problem of greenhouse gas emissions.
