https://earthwiseradio.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/EW-03-23-18-Lots-of-Credit-for-Carbon-Capture.mp3

These days, the federal government has mostly turned its back on efforts to mitigate climate change or, for that matter, to even recognize its existence.  However, the budget bill passed in February contained a major increase in the tax credit known as 45Q, which provides incentives to businesses to develop and utilize carbon capture, utilization and storage technologies.

One of the major causes of the increasing carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere is deforestation.   We chop down about 15 billion trees each year.  Over time, our activities have reduced the number of trees on earth by about 50%.  We do plant trees – these days, about 9 billion a year.  It is a substantial number, but still leaves a net loss of 6 billion trees annually.

Removing CO2 With Plants

February 9, 2018 By EarthWise 2 Comments

https://earthwiseradio.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/EW-02-09-18-Removing-CO2-with-Plants.mp3

Plants are the world’s great storehouse of carbon dioxide.  That is why deforestation is a major contributor to climate change.  If only there were more trees and plants, more of the CO2 in the atmosphere would be absorbed and could no longer trap heat in the atmosphere.

Carbon dioxide and methane are the two greenhouse gases that are having the greatest impact on the global climate.  There are basically three ways to prevent them from getting into the atmosphere:  don’t emit them, trap them and store them away, or turn them into something useful.

https://earthwiseradio.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/EW-11-17-17-Energy-from-Evaporating-Water.mp3

Researchers at Columbia University have demonstrated a potential new energy harvesting technique based on the natural evaporation of water.   Every day, vast amounts of water evaporate from the surfaces of lakes and rivers, a process powered by the heat energy of the sun.   The amount of energy involved is enormous but generally speaking is not something we can tap into.

Storing Carbon in the Ocean

October 6, 2017 By EarthWise Leave a Comment

https://earthwiseradio.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/EW-10-06-17-Storing-Carbon-in-the-Ocean.mp3

As carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere continue to rise, it may be that clean energy technologies, electric cars, and other methods of reducing emissions may not be enough.  Carbon sequestration – sucking carbon out of the atmosphere – is seen by many as a crucial part of the solution.

No single weather event can be attributed to climate change.   Storms, floods and droughts have always happened and some of them have always been severe.   However, two centuries of people burning fossil fuels has altered temperatures just enough that some of the storms we have seen in recent times have been much worse than they otherwise would have been.

Tipping Points

August 9, 2017 By EarthWise

https://earthwiseradio.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/EW-08-09-17-Tipping-Points.mp3

A tipping point is a point in time when a small thing can make a big change happen.  The term was popularized in sociology in recent decades, but really comes from physics where is refers to adding a small amount of weight to a balanced object causing it to topple over.

Trees Are Not Enough

July 18, 2017 By EarthWise

https://earthwiseradio.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/EW-06-26-17-Trees-Are-Not-Enough.mp3

Trees are nature’s way of removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.  Growing plants take up CO2 and store it in the form of their roots, stems and leaves.  And in fact, a significant factor in the growing levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has been the extensive deforestation that has gone on over the past couple of centuries.

Carbon Dioxide Marches On

June 21, 2017 By EarthWise

https://earthwiseradio.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/EW-06-21-17-Carbon-Dioxide-Marches-On.mp3

The end of 2013 marked the first occasional observations of carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere of 400 parts per million.  There is nothing magical about that value, but we do tend to focus on round numbers.

Carbon From The Alaskan Tundra

June 15, 2017 By EarthWise

https://earthwiseradio.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/EW-06-15-17-Carbon-from-the-Alaskan-Tundra.mp3

The soils that encircle the northern reaches of the Arctic are a vast repository for carbon in the form of undecayed organic matter from dead vegetation.  The enormous amount of material trapped in the permafrost contains enough carbon to double the current amount of carbon dioxide in the Earth’s atmosphere.

Storing Energy With Captured CO2

May 17, 2017 By EarthWise

https://earthwiseradio.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/EW-05-17-17-Storing-Energy-with-Captured-CO2.mp3

Capturing carbon dioxide instead of releasing it into the atmosphere is a way we can use fossil fuels without it having harmful effects on the climate.  Energy storage is a way to address the volatility of clean energy sources like wind and solar power.  Excess energy stored during peak production can be used when production ceases, such as when the sun is not shining or the wind is not blowing.

Arguing Against Climate Change

April 3, 2017 By EarthWise

https://earthwiseradio.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/EW-04-03-17-Arguing-Against-Climate-Change.mp3

Most of the world has accepted the analysis of the overwhelming majority of climate scientists that shows that our planet is warming and that our actions are the primary cause.  However, some people – notably a number holding high office – reject this analysis.   What exactly does it imply to say that climate change is not happening or is not caused by us?

Turning Carbon Dioxide Into Rock

December 29, 2016 By EarthWise

https://earthwiseradio.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/EW-12-29-16-Turning-Carbon-Dioxide-into-Rock.mp3

There is a lot of interest in figuring out a way to store carbon dioxide produced from industrial processes and energy plants or even sucking it out of the atmosphere and then storing it.   The problem is where exactly to put the stuff and how to make sure that it stays there.
