Tourism And Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Tourism is a significant contributor to global gross domestic product.  Furthermore, it is growing at an annual rate of 4%, more than many other economic sectors.  There are many places around the world where it is the largest industry.  But until recently, there really wasn’t very good information about its carbon footprint.

The Fight For Greener Cars

U.S. automakers have always been reluctant partners in the nation’s efforts to reduce air pollution and improve fuel efficiency. There have been struggles for decades between the carmakers and the government in setting Corporate Average Fuel Economy (or CAFÉ) standards.  During the Obama administration, some of the most demanding fuel economy and emissions standards were mandated.

V2V And Safer Cars

Automated cars are coming, but they face many challenges in sharing the roads with human drivers.  The on-board sensors in these cars are very effective in many ways, but they cannot see around corners or see through buses or trucks.  They won’t know if six cars ahead, someone has slammed on their breaks leading to a chain-reaction collision.  Of course, human drivers have the same problems.

Cold Weather In A Warming Climate

https://earthwiseradio.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/EW-06-25-18-Cold-Weather-In-A-Warming-Climate.mp3

The climate is warming.  The average global temperature is going up year after year, bringing about significant changes to weather around the world.  But the fact is that these changes don’t always lead to warmer weather.  And ordinary variations in local weather can also go in either direction.

Air pollution is a major problem all around the world.  In fact, exposure to polluted air is blamed for the premature deaths of an estimated 6.5 million people annually.

There are some mind-boggling schemes being discussed to mitigate the global warming caused by greenhouse gases.  These include placing giant mirrors in orbit to reflect sunlight before it reaches Earth and launching millions of tons of sulfur into the stratosphere to simulate the effects of a major volcanic eruption.

Climate Change And Temperature Variations

It’s no surprise that not everyone on the planet is equally responsible for the effects of climate change.  For instance, the Northern Hemisphere, which is home to 13 of the 15 largest countries by GDP, emits far more greenhouse gases than the Southern Hemisphere does.  But the whole planet heats up as a result.

An Electric VW Bus

For baby boomers, the Volkswagen bus was the iconic vehicle of the 1960s counterculture.  It was introduced in 1950, was popular among Gen Xers coming of age in the 1980s, and lasted in one form or another until 2013, when the last one was built in Brazil.

Alien Waters Invade The Arctic

The Arctic is heating up faster than any other region of the planet.  As a result, once-distinct boundaries between the frigid polar ocean and the warmer, neighboring Atlantic and Pacific Oceans are blurring, opening the way for the southern waters to enter the polar regions.  The volume of Pacific Ocean water flowing into the Arctic Ocean through the Bering Strait has increased by 70% over the past decade.  The Arctic Ocean’s cold layering system that blocks Atlantic inflows is breaking down.

Bacteria may have an important role to play in the effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.  A group of researchers at the University of Alberta are genetically engineering non-hazardous bacteria that consume methane and turn it into fuel.

Oman’s Rocks

There is growing interest in the idea of capturing and storing carbon dioxide.  Reducing the amount of it we are putting into the atmosphere is essential for limiting the effects of climate change, but even eliminating emissions entirely is not enough because the CO2 already there stays in the atmosphere for decades or more.

Researchers at Washington State University have developed a low-cost, portable device that works with a smartphone to detect common viral and bacterial infections nearly as well as clinical laboratories.  Such a system could lead to faster and lower-cost lab results for fast-moving epidemics, especially in rural or lower-resource regions where laboratory equipment and medical personnel are not readily available.

Infinitely Recyclable Plastic

June 8, 2018 By EarthWise Leave a Comment

Less than 10% of discarded plastic is recycled.  This is one of the major reasons that plastic waste is such a threat to the environment.  There are many challenges to recycling plastics.  For one thing, there are many different types of plastic and if they are melted together, they tend to phase-separate like oil and water and the resultant substance is structurally weak.  Sorting plastics by type is not a simple task.   More generally, it is very difficult to produce plastic with its original properties from recycled feedstock.  So recycled plastics generally end up being useful in only more limited applications.

Rising Seas On The East Coast

Global sea levels are rising by about a tenth of an inch per year, but in some places, the rise is faster… much faster.  From 2011 to 2015, sea levels rose up to 5 inches – an inch per year – in some locales along the Eastern Seaboard.  Places like Norfolk, Virginia and Miami are experiencing so-called sunny day flooding, something that had not been expected for decades according to climate projections.  So, what is going on?

European Diesel Under Siege

Diesel cars have never been very popular in the US and in the aftermath of the so-called Dieselgate scandal at Volkswagen, they are even less so.  Less than a dozen diesel car models are available for purchase in the US and only one of those is from a German automaker: BMW.

Protecting Reefs Of Hope

One of the most harmful effects of the changing climate is what is happening to coral reefs.  Warmer ocean temperatures and acidification are causing widespread bleaching of coral.  Stressed corals expel the algae living in their tissue, turning the corals white and robbing them of nutrients.  When bleaching events persist, the corals starve and die.   Reefs everywhere have been experiencing mass bleaching events in recent years with over 70% of the coral reefs around the world being damaged.
