Feeding Seaweed To Cows

Methane emissions are a real problem.  As a greenhouse gas, methane has at least 25 times the heat-trapping power of carbon dioxide.  More than a third of all the methane that humans are responsible for putting into the atmosphere comes from domestic livestock:  cattle, sheep, goats and buffalo.  In California alone, dairy cows along with a smaller number of beef cattle emit the heat trapping equivalent of the emissions from 2.5 million cars.

Oman’s Rocks

There is growing interest in the idea of capturing and storing carbon dioxide.  Reducing the amount of it we are putting into the atmosphere is essential for limiting the effects of climate change, but even eliminating emissions entirely is not enough because the CO2 already there stays in the atmosphere for decades or more.

Protecting Reefs Of Hope

One of the most harmful effects of the changing climate is what is happening to coral reefs.  Warmer ocean temperatures and acidification are causing widespread bleaching of coral.  Stressed corals expel the algae living in their tissue, turning the corals white and robbing them of nutrients.  When bleaching events persist, the corals starve and die.   Reefs everywhere have been experiencing mass bleaching events in recent years with over 70% of the coral reefs around the world being damaged.

An Accidental Plastic Eater

A couple of years ago, scientists in Japan discovered bacteria at a recycling plant that were breaking down a type of plastic called polyethylene terephthalate, or PET.  With the world facing a growing plastic pollution problem, British and American researchers began to study the enzyme that the bacteria were using to try to understand how it works.

Climate Change And Biodiversity

According to a new study recently published in the journal Climatic Change, up to half of the plant and animal species in the world’s most naturally-rich areas could face local extinction by the turn of the century due to climate change.  This projection, jeopardizing the biodiversity in places like the Amazon and the Galapagos, assumes carbon emissions continue to rise unchecked.

There is no shortage of dangers to honey bees, but a parasitic mite known as Verroa destructor is considered to be the greatest threat because it transmits virus diseases which lead to colony death.

Elephant tourism is an activity through which tourists can observe and interact with the stately mammals.  A quick online search reveals all sorts of elephant pictures and selfies – patting, washing, riding, and the like.  But this popularity comes at a great cost to elephants.

The frozen landscape of Antarctica is getting greener.  Researchers drilling into layers of moss that have been accumulating in Antarctica over the last 150 years have found that the growth rate of the moss has been speeding up over the past 50 years.

Carbon Dioxide Marches On

The end of 2013 marked the first occasional observations of carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere of 400 parts per million.  There is nothing magical about that value, but we do tend to focus on round numbers.

Spray-On Solar Cells

May 15, 2017 By EarthWise

https://earthwiseradio.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/EW-05-15-17-Spray-On-Solar-Cells.mp3

One of the most exciting possibilities for future solar energy technology is that of solar cells that can be sprayed or printed on to surfaces like the windows of skyscrapers, the roofs of sports utility vehicles, or the walls of houses.  And the expectation is that such technology would be far cheaper than today’s silicon-based solar panels.

Amphibians are one of the most threatened groups of animals on the planet.  Since the late 1980s, scientists have measured dramatic population declines from locations all over the world.  The plummeting amphibian populations are perceived to be one of the most critical threats to global biodiversity.  According to the IUCN, about 1 of every 3 amphibian species is facing extinction.  Some of the greatest threats facing amphibians include climate change, disease, and habitat destruction.

Why Do Animals Eat Ocean Plastic?

November 21, 2016 By WAMC WEB

It’s no secret that there is a lot of plastic debris in our oceans.  In fact, scientists estimate that there is more than 165 million tons of plastic trash swirling about in our oceans today, with an additional 8.8 million tons flowing in every year.  And as the oceans swell with plastic litter, hundreds of marine species are ingesting the stuff – often with dire consequences.

Turning CO2 Into Rock

July 11, 2016 By WAMC WEB

https://earthwiseradio.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/EW-07-11-16-Turning-CO2-into-Rock.mp3

One of the strategies to tackle the problem of increasing greenhouse gas emissions that are resulting in climate change is Carbon Capture and Storage or CCS, which seeks to prevent CO2 from entering the atmosphere and to instead tuck it away somewhere.   A longstanding approach to doing it is to store it underground in voids such as abandoned oil and gas reservoirs.  There are various complications associated with this idea, not the least of which being potential leakage of the stored CO2.

In a recent article in Science entitled “Waste not, want not, emit less,” Danish researchers looked at the problem of food waste in both developed and developing countries.  Overall, about a third of the world’s food is lost or wasted, but the reasons for this vary in different parts of the world.
