U.S. Offshore Wind Powering Up

February 26, 2018 By EarthWise Leave a Comment

After many years of false starts and delays, the offshore wind industry in the U.S. finally seems to be gaining momentum.  According to the Department of Energy, more than 25 offshore wind projects with a generating capacity of 24 gigawatts are now being planned.  Most of these are off of the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic coasts.

There is big money going into renewable energy and energy-smart technologies and half of that is going into solar power.  In 2017, global investments in green energy reached $334 billion and $161 billion of that was in solar.

A Carbon Loophole

February 12, 2018 By EarthWise Leave a Comment

Many power plants in Europe and elsewhere are replacing coal with wood.  For example, the Drax Power Station in Britain was its largest coal-burning plant and is now using wood pellets shipped from the southern U.S. in its boilers.    According to the carbon accounting rules at the EU and elsewhere, the process is considered to be “carbon neutral.”   But is it?

The idea is that new trees are being planted in the forests where the trees are cut to be burned in power plants.  So, there is carbon neutrality.  In principle.

European countries have embarked on a massive effort to switch to generating power from renewable energy.  While there has indeed been major growth in wind and solar power in the 28 countries of the European Union, much of the new “green” power has come from burning wood in converted coal power stations.

A group of 200 scientists wrote to the EU last September insisting that bioenergy from forest biomass is not carbon neutral and that there must be tighter rules to protect forests and their carbon.  Wood burning has become a loophole in controlling carbon emissions.

There are problems with the claims of carbon neutrality.  There is no way to know whether enough new trees are actually being planted to replace those being burned.  And then there is the time lag for tree replacement.  Trees don’t grow overnight.  There are also the carbon emissions associated with harvesting, processing and transporting wood.

There are most certainly ways in which burning biomass can be carbon neutral and can represent real progress over the use of fossil fuels.  But caution must be taken to avoid exploiting loopholes in current climate rules that might actually result in increased carbon emissions.

The Australian state of South Australia suffered crippling electricity outages in September 2016, which coincided with gale-force winds and flooding rains.  The outages were triggered by storm damage to major transmission lines followed by wind farms disconnecting from the power grid.

Economics Of Solar And Wind Power

https://earthwiseradio.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/EW-01-05-18-Economics-of-Solar-and-Wind-Power.mp3

It is well-known that the cost of both solar and wind energy has been dropping dramatically in recent years.  That trend is largely responsible for the rapid growth of both power sources.   A recent study has revealed just how remarkable the economic progress has been.

Germany’s Struggle

December 15, 2017 By EarthWise Leave a Comment

Germany has a reputation as one of the greenest countries on earth.  They have comprehensive recycling programs, they treasure their forests, and in recent decades, they have been aggressively working to replace both nuclear and coal-fired power plants with renewable energy sources.  They have been an early world leader in solar power.  And their national Energiewende or “energy turn” initiative demonstrates a strong commitment to the environment.

Exporting Emissions

July 26, 2017 By EarthWise

https://earthwiseradio.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/EW-07-26-17-Exporting-Emissions.mp3

The Paris Climate Agreement seeks to reduce global carbon emissions.  The nearly 200 countries who signed it have pledged to reduce their own emissions within their borders.  And therein lies the rub:  the agreement says nothing about the impact their products have across the world.   For some countries, the problem is not so much the emissions they produce; it is those they export.

Improving Energy Storage

https://earthwiseradio.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/EW-06-22-17-Improving-Energy-Storage.mp3

The transition to sustainable energy sources faces many challenges.  One important one is to make those sources as reliable as conventional energy systems.  For technologies like solar and wind power, which can’t operate around the clock, an enabling element is effective energy storage.   Energy storage is critical for both the electricity grid and for transportation.

Surging Wind Power In The U.S.

So far, it has been a big year for the U.S. wind industry, which experienced its fastest first-quarter growth since 2009.  In total, about 2,000 megawatts of new capacity was installed, enough to power about 500,000 homes.   With this addition, wind now produces 5 1/2% of the country’s electricity.

Fossil Fuel Companies And Renewables

June 12, 2017 By EarthWise

https://earthwiseradio.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/EW-06-12-17-Fossil-Fuel-Companies-and-Renewables.mp3

There is a tendency to think of the changes in the energy industry as a pitched battle between fossil fuel companies and renewable energy.  There is some truth to this, but only to a certain extent.   The multi-trillion-dollar fossil fuel industry is made up of businesses dedicated to growth and increased profits.  And like businesses in other industries when major changes occur, fossil fuel companies may read the tea leaves and change with the times.

The seven northeastern U.S. states that make up the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative have all set ambitious emissions reduction goals and renewable energy targets that will be difficult to meet.   For example, New York has the goal of getting 50% of its electricity from renewable sources by the year 2030.

According to a new study by the non-profit group Carbon Brief, carbon dioxide emissions in the United Kingdom are at their lowest levels since the 1920s.  Four factors are responsible:  a record drop in coal use, the rapid growth of renewable energy, the expansion of energy efficiency programs, and the increased use of natural gas for electricity power plants.

A Hydrogen Sponge

Hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles are just starting to enter the market but they have a long way to go before they can even catch up with their battery-powered counterparts. Powering cars with hydrogen has the advantage that fueling the vehicle is much like what we are used to:  pull up to the pump, fill your tank for a few minutes, and drive off.

Installations of solar power continue to increase rapidly around the world and in no place more than China.  By the end of 2016, total solar generating capacity in China reached 77.4 gigawatts, making it the largest producer of solar energy in the world.  Globally, there is a total of 228 gigawatts of solar power installed, although that number keeps changing rapidly.

A Better Way To Farm Algae

March 7, 2017 By EarthWise

Microalgae biofuels may provide a viable alternative to fossil fuels.  Algae efficiently use CO2 and can produce biomass very quickly.  Some species can double their mass in as little as 6 hours.   Such single-celled organisms are amenable to high-throughput techniques to evolve new strains, unlike terrestrial biomass sources like corn which can take years to modify.
