Clean power gathered unprecedented momentum in 2017.  With climate problems on the rise, national and local governments are pushing for more renewable energy and the end of fossil-fueled cars.  Corporations around the globe are making major commitments to green technology.  Despite the Trump Administration’s open hostility toward clean power and its rejection of climate science, American states, municipalities and private companies are all getting with the program.

A Record Drop In Coal Consumption

Global consumption of coal dropped by 1.7% last year.  This is a major change considering that it had increased by an average of 1.9% per year from 2005 to 2015.   China, which accounts for about half of the coal burned in the world, used 1.6% less in 2016, as compared to an increase of 3.7% per year over the previous 11 years.

China And India Climate Progress

China and India have 36% of the world’s population and produce about 35% of global CO2 emissions, ranking first and third respectively in that category.  The United States, with a little over 4% of the world’s population, produces about 16% of global CO2 emissions, good for second place.

Fencing Out People And Animals

The flood of refugees from the Middle East and Africa has prompted governments in the Balkan countries to erect hundreds of miles of border fences.  Countries like Slovenia have put up razor-wire security fences to stem the tide of migrants.  These border fences are built with little if any consideration of the environmental impacts on wildlife.

Alaska’s Threatened Communities

Because of its Arctic location, Alaska is warming about twice as fast as the rest of the United States.   The past year has been the warmest on record.  The forces of erosion and increasingly powerful storms have resulted in the imminent risk of destruction for at least 31 Alaskan towns and cities.   Many are predicted to become uninhabitable over the next few decades.  Residents of these places are likely to join the growing flow of climate refugees around the globe.
