Ocean energy is still one of the biggest untapped clean energy sources on the planet.  There are many studies that have shown that it could provide power for millions of homes in the U.S. alone.   But despite this, the technology is still in its infancy and it is unclear when and if it can become a major contributor to our energy needs.

By some estimates, America’s oceans could provide enough electric power to meet a quarter of the country’s energy needs.  Despite this, until recently the contribution to the U.S. electric grid from marine energy has been exactly zero.

Disruptive Light Bulb Technology

September 27, 2016 By WAMC WEB

Investment companies like to talk about the disruptive nature of technologies and how they change industries while simultaneously changing our lives.  The growing emphasis on a low-carbon economy has spotlighted a number of technologies as being disruptive in their industry sectors.  One hears this frequently when discussing wind and solar power.  Clearly, these two technologies are changing the face of the utility industry, but at least at present, they still represent a fairly small fraction of the overall business.

Energy Intensity

September 7, 2016 By WAMC WEB

Every stage of civilization is characterized by its use of energy.   From burning wood to steam engines to our electrified society, energy is behind everything we do.  Over time, human society has become increasingly energy intensive.  As our standards of living have improved and as we overcome the effects of weather – either cold or warm – it takes more and more energy to live the lives we lead.

Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe.  Estimates are that it comprises 75% of all matter.  There is plenty of it here on earth too, but almost none of it is in its elemental form.  It is mostly bound up in compounds like water.

Solar Power In Las Vegas

August 16, 2016 By WAMC WEB

https://earthwiseradio.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/EW-08-16-16-Solar-Power-in-Las-Vegas.mp3

The Las Vegas Strip has been referred to as an energy consumption nightmare.  Just one look at the place provides evidence for the claim:  an endless sea of lights, glitz and glamour and cavernous casinos running huge banks of air conditioning equipment in the desert heat.  Even with Boulder Dam a hop, skip and jump away, Vegas is struggling to meet its electricity needs.

The circular economy refers to the concept of an economic system in which there is no waste.  Materials are recycled, repurposed and reinvented to create new raw materials thereby reducing the need to extract new resources and thus saving money, energy and water resources.

Geothermal Heating

July 27, 2016 By WAMC WEB

https://earthwiseradio.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/EW-07-27-16-Geothermal-Heating.mp3

Geothermal heat pumps use the heat stored in the earth’s surface to heat homes and buildings.  Even in the dead of winter, the temperature not very far below ground remains at a temperature typically in the 50s.  Geothermal systems tap into this immense thermal resource.  Conversely, this same temperature sink can be used to provide cooling during the summer.  It takes electricity to run the heat pumps, but is vastly more efficient than using electricity directly to produce heat or to cool air.

CO2 Air Capture

June 30, 2016 By WAMC WEB

https://earthwiseradio.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/EW-06-30-16-CO2-Air-Capture.mp3

The level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has reached 400 parts per million and is still rising.   Climate scientists say that 450 parts per million would be dangerously high.  Many experts say that we really need to get back to 350 parts per million.  We are trying to prevent global temperatures from rising more than 1.5 degrees Celsius.

The Trouble With Burning Forests

June 23, 2016 By WAMC WEB

President Obama has set 2030 as the target for reducing U.S. carbon dioxide emissions to comply with the Paris Climate accord. Unfortunately, the Senate’s new Energy Bill would allow states to count wood as a “carbon neutral” fuel when drawing up plans to comply with the EPA’s Clean Power Plan.

Storing Energy With Rocks

June 2, 2016 By WAMC WEB

https://earthwiseradio.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/EW-06-02-16-Storing-Energy-with-Rocks.mp3

Energy storage is hot topic because more and more electricity is being generated from renewable sources like solar power and wind power that can’t operate all the time because the sun doesn’t always shine and the wind doesn’t always blow.  So we need ways to store surplus energy when it is produced and be able to use it later when it is needed.
