A Hydrogen-Powered Train

It seems like something out of a science fiction movie, but a nearly silent train that glides along its tracks emitting nothing but water is a reality.   In March, Germany conducted successful tests of the world’s first “Hydrail,” which is a hydrogen-powered, zero-emission train.

A New Record For Solar Hydrogen Production

Renewable energy may be under attack by the federal government these days, but one federal agency is making great progress on using the sun’s energy to split hydrogen from water.   The National Renewable Energy Laboratory, located in Golden, Colorado, recently highlighted two initiatives aimed at the production of renewable hydrogen.

India’s Air Pollution

Poor air quality is a major problem worldwide.  Exposure to air pollution is linked to the premature deaths of an estimated 6.5 million people every year.  This makes air pollution the fourth largest threat to human health, trailing only high blood pressure, dietary risks, and smoking.

Americans toss out an almost unbelievable $161 billion worth of food every year.  There are numerous efforts underway to address this problem, but they are mostly at the local level or in the business sector.   To date, we have no national- or international-level policies that tackle the issue.  In this regard, Europe is way ahead of us.

Fencing Out People And Animals

The flood of refugees from the Middle East and Africa has prompted governments in the Balkan countries to erect hundreds of miles of border fences.  Countries like Slovenia have put up razor-wire security fences to stem the tide of migrants.  These border fences are built with little if any consideration of the environmental impacts on wildlife.

Floating Wind

Offshore wind power can supply a significant amount of energy to our hungry grid.  In many places in Europe, it is doing just that.   Here in US, it is just starting to be used in some places in the Northeast, with the first small offshore wind farm coming on line off the coast of Rhode Island.

New Doubts About GMO Crops

Genetically modified crops have been at the center of a great deal of controversy for a number of years.  There have been widespread fears that they are unsafe to eat.  Continuing studies have indicated that those fears appear to be unsubstantiated.

Offshore Wind In Europe

The U.S. has just turned on its first offshore wind farm off the coast of Rhode Island.  In the meantime, offshore wind continues to grow by leaps and bounds in Europe.   Wind energy in the European Union accounts for 12% of its electricity supply.  Until 2011, offshore wind comprised only 5-10% of the newly-installed wind energy capacity; now it about one third of the new installations.

Europe has embraced offshore wind power as a major contributor to its electricity needs for a long time.  As of June, there was a total of 3,344 offshore wind turbines with a combined capacity of over 11.5 gigawatts of power connected in European waters in 82 wind farms located in 11 different countries and providing power to millions of people.

Light Pollution

The luminous glow of the Milky Way, the galaxy that contains our Solar System, has inspired everything from stories and songs to paintings and poems for centuries.  But now one third of the people on the planet – including 80% of Americans and 60% of Europeans – cannot see the Milky Way at night because of light pollution.  Nighttime light pollution now covers nearly 80% of the globe.

Electric Car Boom

We hear a great deal about electric cars these days.  Will people buy them?  Are they worth it?  And, of course, there is the tremendous buzz surrounding Tesla’s forthcoming moderately-priced car.   But there is also lots of activity in electrifying larger vehicles, including garbage trucks, city buses, and medium-sized trucks used by freight companies like FedEx.
