Recent sightings of a destructive tree-eating beetle in northeast pine forests have been alarming.  And a new study from Columbia University has confirmed what ecologists had feared all along:  they’re here to stay.

Global Warming And The Nitrogen Problem

Excess nitrogen in the environment is a big problem.  The most visible aspect of the problem is the spread of toxic algae blooms in oceans, lakes and other bodies of water.  But there are other effects as well such as unwanted alterations to ecosystems.

Save The Turtles

New York is home to 11 native species of land turtles.  Many of the species can’t breed until age 10 and then they lay just one small clutch of eggs each year by digging in a suitable patch of sandy soil.  As a result, breeding females are at a premium for the welfare of the species.  Overall, turtles are on decline in the Empire State.

Renewable Energy Projects In The Northeast

The seven northeastern U.S. states that make up the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative have all set ambitious emissions reduction goals and renewable energy targets that will be difficult to meet.   For example, New York has the goal of getting 50% of its electricity from renewable sources by the year 2030.

New York’s Solar Boom

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo recently announced that the state’s support for solar power initiatives has resulted in an 800% increase in industry growth since 2011.   New York’s various renewable energy programs have resulted in $1.5 billion in investments.  The NY-Sun Initiative has produce a 10-fold increase in solar projects in several regions of the state.  The Mohawk Valley led the way with an almost 16-fold increase in solar capacity.

Northeast Temperatures

A year ago, nearly 200 countries signed an agreement, known as the Paris Accord, to fight climate change by mitigating greenhouse gas emissions.  They each promised to reduce their carbon output as soon as possible, and to do their best to keep global warming well below 2-degrees Celsius (or 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit).

Floating Wind

Offshore wind power can supply a significant amount of energy to our hungry grid.  In many places in Europe, it is doing just that.   Here in US, it is just starting to be used in some places in the Northeast, with the first small offshore wind farm coming on line off the coast of Rhode Island.

The Tick Project

Tiny ticks are a big problem. Anyone taking a walk in the woods is advised to do a tick check. Ticks infect more than 325,000 people with Lyme disease each year, and this number continues to rise.

Climate Change And Lobster

It’s no secret that ocean waters are warming, especially in New England.  The waters in the Gulf of Maine are warming 99% faster than the rest of the world’s oceans.  What’s the problem?  Well, lobsters like cold water, and as a result, they’re heading north.
