Fencing Out People And Animals

The flood of refugees from the Middle East and Africa has prompted governments in the Balkan countries to erect hundreds of miles of border fences.  Countries like Slovenia have put up razor-wire security fences to stem the tide of migrants.  These border fences are built with little if any consideration of the environmental impacts on wildlife.

Pandas No Longer Endangered

Back in June, we reported that the International Union for the Conservation of Nature was reassessing the giant panda’s status as an endangered species.  Well, in an update of the IUCN’s Red List of Threatened Species in September, the giant panda was indeed downgraded to “vulnerable.”

The Hottest Month (Again)

NASA data show that the Earth’s temperature in July was the highest recorded since record-keeping began 136 years ago.  It was also the 10th straight month of record-breaking temperatures and was .18 degrees Fahrenheit higher than the previous hottest July in 2011.

Responding To Climate Change

This week, representatives of 195 nations and the 28 member states of the European Union are meeting in Paris to try to put together the first global agreement to curb carbon dioxide emissions.  Among those nations, some are already doing much better than others.
