Plastics In The Air | Earth Wise

Plastic pollution is a growing problem

Plastic pollution is a big deal.  There are plastics clogging up landfills and waterways and accumulating in the oceans, choking turtles and seabirds.  Annual production of plastics has grown from 2 million tons a year in 1950 to more than 450 million tons today.

As if plastic problems weren’t already big enough, it is becoming increasingly clear that there are growing amounts of microplastic particles in the air. Bits of plastic are lofted into the sky from seafoam bubbles and from spinning tires on highways.  The particles are so light that they can travel for thousands of miles, far from where they originate.

Studies in recent years documented the presence of plastic particles even in places like the Pyrenees in Europe and in federally protected areas of the US.  Other studies have measured the quantity of plastic in the air of various locations and have looked at the origins of the particles.

In the western US, over 80% of microplastics came from roads where vehicles kick up particles from tires and brakes.   In remote areas of the Pacific, there is less than a single particle of plastic per cubic meter of air.  In cities like London and Beijing, on the other hand, there can be several thousand particles per cubic meter.

Microplastics can act as airborne aerosols, like dust, salt, soot, volcanic ash, and other particles.  Aerosols play an important role in the formation of clouds and in temperature regulation on the earth.  At low concentrations, such as exist in most places, microplastic aerosols don’t have much of an effect.  But there are more in the atmosphere all the time and, at this point, scientists don’t really know what effect they will have.

Solar Power And Water | Earth Wise

Solar power and water conservation in California

Solar power is a prime example of clean energy, but it does not come without complications and potential problems.  One problem that has arisen in the Californian desert is the effect on scarce water supplies.  Solar farms don’t use up water when they are operating but they consume it when they are being built.

One of the densest areas of solar development in North America is in a corridor along Interstate 10 near Palm Springs, California.  Multiple utility-scale solar projects are underway near the small town of Desert Center.  The projects are being built on public land overseen by the Department of Interior’s Bureau of Land Management.  The location is ideal for solar power projects:  endless sunshine, nearby transmission lines to distribute power, and a major highway for easy transportation of construction materials.

The problem is that during construction of the solar farms, the law requires developers to reduce the amount of dust being generated that can otherwise spread health problems like Valley Fever.  Preventing dust from flying requires water and lots of it.

The water comes from groundwater and building the solar farms is drying up local wells and emptying the aquifer that is part of the Chuckwalla Valley Groundwater Basin.  For the people who live in Desert Center and adjacent areas, this is a serious problem. It is also a problem for the desert ecosystem that supports palo verde and ironwood trees as well as endangered desert tortoises.

This isn’t an easy problem to solve. Seven approved new utility-scale solar projects in the area will provide enough electricity to power 2 million homes. But having enough water to build those projects won’t be easy.

Great Salt Lake In Danger | Earth Wise

Great Salt Lake is threatened by the changing climate

Utah’s Great Salt Lake has been plagued by excessive water use and extensive drought conditions.  As of January, the lake dropped to record-low water levels, losing 73% of its water and exposing 60% of its lakebed. According to scientists, the lake could disappear entirely within five years.

Great Salt Lake is what is known as a “terminal lake,” which means that it is fed only by rain, snow, and runoff and has no rivers that take water to the ocean.  As a result, salt and minerals build up over time.  With so much salt in the water, only brine flies and shrimp can survive in it.  The unique ecosystem supports 10 million migratory birds.  As the lake continues to dry up, the water is becoming too salty for even algae and microbes to survive.  With shallow mud replacing previous shallow water, the nests of the 80,000 white pelicans that annually come to the lake are endangered by predators that can simply walk over to the eggs.

The historic low water levels have exposed 800 square miles of lakebed.  This lakebed holds centuries of natural and manmade toxins like mercury, arsenic, and selenium.  The exposed mud ultimately turns to dust that is carried off into the air.  This is contributing to what is already some of the worst winter air pollution in the nation.  Scientists warn that the unfolding ecological disaster may become a human health disaster.

State officials and university researchers have formed a “Great Salt Lake Strike Team” looking for ways to get more water to the lake.  There are a number of so-called moonshot proposals to save the lake.  It remains to be seen what will be done, but the clock is ticking.

Fertilizing The Ocean | Earth Wise

There are a variety of schemes for removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.  Some require advanced and generally not-very-well developed technology.  Others, such as planting vast numbers of trees, are nature-based but are daunting with respect to the scale to which they need to take place in order to be truly effective.

Researchers at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Richland, Washington have been examining the scientific evidence for seeding the oceans with iron-rich engineered fertilizer in order to feed phytoplankton.  Phytoplankton are microscopic plants that are a key part of the ocean ecosystem.

Phytoplankton take up carbon dioxide as they grow.  In nature, nutrients from the land end up in the ocean through rivers and from blowing dust.  These nutrients fertilize the plankton.  The idea is to augment these existing processes to increase the growth of phytoplankton.  As they eventually die, they sink deep into the ocean, taking the excess carbon with them.


The researchers argue that engineered nanoparticles could provide highly controlled nutrition that is specifically tuned for different ocean environments.  Surface coatings could help the particles attach to plankton.  Some could be engineered with light-absorbing properties, allowing plankton to consume and use more carbon dioxide.

Analysis of over 100 published studies showed that numerous non-toxic, abundant, and easy-to-create metal-oxygen materials could safely enhance plankton growth.  According to the researchers, the proposed fertilization would simply speed up a natural process that already sequesters carbon in a form that could remove it from the atmosphere for thousands of years.  They argue that given the current trends in the climate, time is of the essence for taking action.

Glacial Loss In The Swiss Alps | Earth Wise

Record glacial loss in the Swiss Alps

In 2022, glaciers in the Swiss Alps melted more than in any year on record.   This is the latest piece of bad news for the country’s glaciers, which have lost more than half of their volume of ice since the 1930s.

The melting season for Switzerland’s snow and ice typically starts in May and ends in early October.  This year’s melting season caused glaciers in the Diablerets mountain group to thin by an average of 13 feet, which is 3 times the amount of thinning observed over the past decade.   The Tsanfleuron pass between two of the glaciers is now exposed as bare rock for the first time in several thousand years. Across Switzerland, glaciers lost about 6% of their remaining volume just this year.  The previous worst year for glaciers was 2003, when losses were nearly 4%. 

There was significant melting this year in part because of the small amount of snowfall over the winter.  That snow melted quickly, being sped up by the warming effect of dust from the Sahara Desert falling on the snow.  By early summer, there was no longer a protective blanket of snow on the glaciers, exposing them to summer heat.

The loss of glaciers is far more serious than the disappearance of aesthetically pleasing landscape features.   Glaciers act as reservoirs of water that persist through the summer months.  Melt from glaciers provides water to ecosystems and creates habitats for plants and animals.  Cold runoff from glaciers affects downstream water temperatures which have a major impact on insects, fish, and other creatures.  Globally, melting glaciers contribute more than 20% of the observed ongoing sea-level rise.

River Of Dust | Earth Wise

Every year, more than 100 million tons of dust blow out of North Africa.  Strong seasonal winds lift the dust from the Sahara Desert northward.  A few times a year, the winds from the south are strong and persistent enough to drive the dust all the way to Europe.

On March 15, a large plume of Saharan dust blew out of North Africa and crossed the Mediterranean into Western Europe.  European cities were blanketed with the dust, degrading their air quality, and turning skies orange.  Alpine ski slopes were stained with the dust.

These dust events are associated with so-called atmospheric rivers that arise from storms.  Such rivers usually bring extreme moisture but can also carry dust.  Over the past 40 years, nearly 80% of atmospheric rivers over northwestern Africa have led to extreme dust events over Europe.  The March 15 event was associated with Storm Celia, a powerful system that brought strong winds, rain, sleet, hail, and snow to the Canary Islands.

Atmospheric dust plays a major role in climate and biological systems.  The dust absorbs and reflects solar energy and also fertilizes ocean ecosystems with iron and other minerals.

The climate effects of dust are complicated.  Dust can decrease the amount of sunlight reaching the surface, affect cloud formation, and decrease temperatures.  But dust also darkens the snowpack, leading to more rapid snowmelt.  A 2021 dust event resulted in a rapid melt of Alpine snow, reducing its depth by half in less than a month.

The effects of this year’s dust event are not yet known, but this atmospheric river associated with Storm Celia appeared to carry less water and more dust compared with the 2021 event.

Improved Radar For Cars | Earth Wise

Improving radar technology for cars

Self-driving cars require a variety of sensor systems in order for the cars to safely navigate roads and deal with the wide range of objects and conditions that they encounter.  Two competing technologies that cars use to identify and locate objects on the scene are radar and LiDAR. 

Radar uses transmitted radio waves to locate objects and LiDAR bounces laser beams off of objects.   Each has its shortcomings.   Radar has the problem that only a small fraction of the transmitted signals gets reflected back to the sensor, so that there is frequently insufficient data to fully characterize a scene.  LiDAR has the problem that it is an optical system that does not work well in fog, dust, rain, or snow.  It is also much more expensive than radar.

Researchers at the University of California San Diego have developed a new system that they describe as a LiDAR-like radar. The system consists of two radar sensors placed on a car’s hood and spaced about 1.5 meters apart.  This configuration enables the system to see more space and detail than a single radar sensor.

Having two radars at different vantage points with an overlapping field of view creates a region of high-resolution with a high probability of detecting the objects that are present.  The system also overcomes noise problems of conventional radar systems.

The researchers developed new algorithms that can fuse the information from two different radar sensors and produce a new image free of noise.

Self-driving cars have to combine detection technologies like radar with cameras and ultrasonic sensors.  Duplicating the capabilities that people use in order to safely drive a car is a complex problem requiring a combination of multiple sensors and sophisticated software.

Dust And Himalayan Glaciers | Earth Wise

Dust playing a major role in melting glaciers

Glaciers in the Himalayas have been melting and retreating, as have glaciers around the world.  As is the case elsewhere, human-driven climate change is a major factor.  But at the lofty heights of the Himalayas, warming temperatures are not the biggest culprit.  Black carbon – released into the air by burning fossil fuels or biomass such as plants, trees, and shrubs – darkens the snow and causes it to absorb more of the sun’s heat.  A recent study by an international team of scientist has identified another important factor:  dust.

An estimated 5 billion tons of desert dust enters the Earth’s atmosphere every year.  Dust from places like Saudi Arabia gets picked up by spring winds and gets deposited on the western sides of mountains, where it can make the air 10 times more polluted than most European cities.  Dust blows across industrial and desert areas in the Indian subcontinent and the Middle East and lands in the Himalayas.  According to the new study, this dust is often the dominant cause of snow melt in those areas.

Desert dust causes snow melt in the same way that black carbon does.   Dirty snow absorbs sunlight more easily than clean snow.

Desert dust is a natural part of Earth’s systems, but the amount of it in the atmosphere has steadily increased since the Industrial Revolution, when humans greatly expanded into desert areas and broke through surface crust that held large amounts of dust in place.

There is not much we can do about desert dust, short of eliminating deserts.  But the disappearance of the Himalayan ice pack – which sustains over a billion people – can be mitigated by reducing greenhouse gas emissions to address climate change .

Saharan Dust And The Amazon | Earth Wise

Saharan dust and the amazon

We talk about globalization primarily in the context of how human activities connect up distant parts of the world.  But there are natural processes that are global in scope as well.  One of these is the transportation of mineral-rich dust from the Sahara Desert in North Africa to the Amazon Basin in South America.

Every year, this dust is lifted into the atmosphere by winds and carried on a 5,000-mile journey across the North Atlantic.  It turns out that this dust plays a critical role in the Amazon basin ecosystem.  The Amazon Basin in turn plays a major role in global climate.  Its trees and plants remove huge quantities of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and stores the carbon in vegetation.

The transcontinental journey of dust is important because of what is in the dust.  The dust picked up from ancient lake beds in Chad comes from rock minerals formed by dead microorganisms and is loaded with phosphorus.  Phosphorus is an essential nutrient for plant growth and is in short supply in Amazonian soils.  Local nutrients like phosphorus in the Amazon mostly come from fallen, decomposing leaves and organic matter but tend to be washed away by rainfall into streams and rivers. 

Studies have shown that the phosphorus that reaches Amazon soils from Saharan dust is essential to replace the amounts lost to rain and flooding.

Recent research has found that the quantities of dust transported to South America are inversely linked to rainfall in North Africa and is likely to be affected by climate change.  Changes in dust transport could affect plant growth in the Amazon and the amount of CO2 removed from the atmosphere.  The forces that affect the climate are truly global in nature.

Increasing Air Pollution | Earth Wise

Half of the global population is exposed to increasing air pollution

According to researchers from the University of Exeter, half of the world’s population is exposed to increasing air pollution despite global efforts to improve air quality.  The study, which was completed in conjunction with the World Health Organization, suggests that air pollution represents a major and growing threat to human health. 

For the study, which was recently published in the journal Climate and Atmospheric Science, the researchers reviewed global air quality trends between 2010 and 2016.  The research team examined those findings against a backdrop of global policies to reduce air pollution.  The researchers used ground monitoring data and satellite data to develop yearly air quality profiles for individual countries and regions. 

The scientists focused on fine particulate matter, which is a mixture of solid particles and liquid droplets found in the air.  Some of the particles, like dust, soot, or smoke, are large enough to be seen by the naked eye.  Others are so small that they can only be seen using a microscope.  Inhaling fine particulate matter can cause all sorts of health issues, including asthma, respiratory inflammation, and even promote cancer. 

For much of the world’s population, the consequences of polluted air are more deadly than war, violence, and many diseases.  According to the World Health Organization, more than four million deaths every year can be attributed to outdoor air pollution.  Some of the major sources of air pollution include coal-fired power plants, agriculture, transportation, and deforestation. 

The study found that low and middle income countries experience the highest burden of air pollution around the world, with the largest concentrations found in central and southeastern Asia.

More long term policies are needed to curb this growing threat to public health.

Dust From The Sahara | Earth Wise

A vast cloud of dust from the Sahara Desert blanketed the Caribbean in late June before drifting across the southeastern U.S.  The phenomenon is nothing new; only the magnitude of the occurrence this time around was unusual.  According to experts, this is the most significant Sahara dust event in 50 years.

The Sahara Desert is the major source on Earth of mineral dust, with some 60-200 million tons of it per year being lifted into the atmosphere.  Convection currents over hot desert areas lift the dust to very high altitudes.  From there, it can be transported worldwide by winds.   The dust, combined with the extremely hot, dry air of the Sahara Desert often forms an atmospheric layer called the Saharan Air Layer, which can have significant effects on tropical weather by interfering with the development of hurricanes.  The Saharan Air Layer typically moves across the North Atlantic every three to five days from late spring to early fall, peaking in the middle of the summer.  It can occupy a layer as much as two miles thick in the atmosphere.

The dust plume this summer was highly visible from space, covering thousands of miles of the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea.

A common effect of Sahara dust is that normally blue skies can acquire a milky haze, but beyond that can lead to spectacular sunsets.  But apart from the visual spectacle, the dust can aggravate the conditions of people with asthma, respiratory illnesses, and allergies. On the positive side, as long as the dust is around, it is much less likely that tropical storms and hurricanes will form.

Air pollution is deadly.  Studies have found that fine particulate matter, such as airborne pieces of dust, dirt, smoke, soot, and other microscopic particles can enter our lungs and bloodstream, contributing to major health conditions such as heart disease, stroke, cancer, and kidney disease.

Algae And The Greenland Ice Sheet

The Greenland Ice Sheet is the second largest ice body in the world, after the Antarctic ice sheet.  It is about 1,500 miles long, nearly 900 miles across at its widest point, and averages more than a mile in thickness.  It has experienced record melting in recent years and is a source of great concern as the climate continues to warm. The Greenland Ice Sheet is losing an estimated 270 billion tons of ice each year.   If the entire sheet were to melt, global sea levels would rise by 24 feet which, of course, would be a world-wide catastrophe.

The Ecology Of Dust

It isn’t something we think about very often, but dust is a connector of ecosystems around the world.  Dust carries various minerals and nutrients to places where such things are in very scarce supply.  This includes the oceans of the world as well as many forests and other ecosystems.  For example, phosphorus-bearing dust carried from the Gobi Desert is essential to the growth of giant redwoods in California’s Sierra Mountains.
