Deconstructing buildings to reduce waste

An estimated 30 million tons of wood waste from construction and demolition in the U.S. ends up in landfills each year.  A growing number of cities have launched initiatives to reuse the wood instead.  It is a strategy to reduce carbon emissions, cut waste, and shift towards a circular economy.

For a long time, salvaged wood was a niche pursuit by people who valued the fine grain and enduring quality of older wood.  Reclaimed old-growth lumber offers character and strength.  These people pursued construction that uses wood with a story – timber recovered from historic structures, collapsing barns, and other demolished buildings.

Now, there are multiple companies in the business of salvaging wood from buildings.  Cities and businesses are embracing the use of reclaimed materials.   Ordinances in cities like Portland, Oregon, Boulder, Colorado, and San Antonio, Texas require older buildings to be taken apart for repurposing their materials.  Palo Alto, California has banned demolition completely. 

Portland was the first U.S. city to require old residential homes to be deconstructed.  After a decade, contractors have deconstructed more than 650 homes in the city, salvaging 2,000 tons of reusable wood.

Using reclaimed wood in local buildings stores carbon and reduces emissions by avoiding the need to cut new trees, process materials, and ship them long distances.

Deconstructing buildings is not a widely available skill.  Contractors have to be trained on how to dismantle buildings piece by piece.  But there is now a national registry of deconstruction trainers and a network of practitioners.

Saving birds from buildings

A creative solution to save birds from buildings in Chicago

Researchers estimate that hundreds of millions of birds die hitting buildings every year in the United States.  Striking buildings is believed to be one of the major factors behind the nearly 30% decline in North American bird populations since 1970.

Chicago is one of the most dangerous cities for migrating birds based on its location and its numerous tall, glassy buildings.  Migrating birds that make their homes in forests and grasslands don’t perceive glass as solid and are confused by reflections.

While many Chicago skyscrapers are dangerous for birds, the Lakeside Center at McCormick Place is infamous for the fact that it claimed the lives of nearly a thousand birds on a single day in October 2023.

There are various strategies for reducing bird strikes.  Over decades, McCormick Place management has tried erecting strips of netting, broadcasting calls of birds of prey, and putting up silhouettes of them.  They commissioned a nine-acre park of native prairie and woodlands on the roof of a parking deck.  None of these things made a major difference.

Last summer, the building installed a pattern of dots over the surface of the building’s windows.  The dots are only a couple of inches apart, so even tiny hummingbirds don’t try to dart through.  The window treatment cost $1.2 million paid for by the state of Illinois.  People in the building scarcely notice the dots.  Their views of the city and lake are unimpaired.

The results are nothing short of remarkable.  During last fall’s migration, bird deaths were down by about 95% compared with the two previous autumns.  This spring’s migration has been with implications for glassy structures far beyond Chicago.

Our cities are sinking

A new study by the Columbia University Climate School has found that all of the 28 most populous cities in the United States are sinking to some extent.  This phenomenon of subsidence is not just taking place in cities on the coast, where relative sea level is an issue, but also in cities in the interior.

The primary cause of subsidence is large-scale groundwater extraction for human use.  When water is withdrawn from aquifers made up of fine-grained sediments, the pore spaces formerly occupied by water can eventually collapse, leading to compaction below and sinkage at the surface.

The fastest sinking city in the US is Houston, with more than 40% of its area subsiding more than 5 millimeters a year and 12% sinking at twice that rate.  Some local spots are going down as much as 5 centimeters a year.   These seem like very small numbers but the fact that the subsidence is often not uniform across an urban area means that there are stresses to building foundations and other infrastructure.  Parts of Las Vegas, Washington D.C., and San Francisco have particularly fast sinking zones.

There are other causes of subsidence.  In Texas, pumping of oil and gas adds to the phenomenon.  A 2023 study found that New York City’s more than one million buildings are pressing down on the Earth so hard that they may be contributing to the city’s ongoing subsidence.  About 1% of the total area of the country’s 28 largest cities faces some danger from uneven subsidence.

Overall, some 34 million Americans live in cities affected by subsidence.  Global cities facing especially rapid subsidence include Jakarta, Venice, and here in the U.S., New Orleans.

Living in a warming world

As global temperatures rise due to increased greenhouse gas emissions, communities around the world face more frequent and intense heatwaves, droughts, and extreme weather events. These growing climate pressures not only strain infrastructure and natural resources, but also play a critical role in shaping where people live. 

Recent projections from the First Street Foundation, which analyzes climate risks across the United States, highlight just how significant these shifts could be. In Sacramento County, California, rising flood risks, declining air quality, and soaring insurance costs could lead to a population decline of up to 28% by 2055. The risk assessment also projects that Monmouth and Ocean counties in New Jersey could each lose more than 30% of their populations. And Fresno County, California, could see nearly half of its residents relocate due to mounting climate-related pressures.

Urban areas like cities, towns, and suburbs are particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.  Cities become significantly hotter due to the abundance of heat-absorbing surfaces and lack of green spaces, which intensifies heatwaves, worsens conditions for vulnerable populations, and may ultimately force some people to move.

Addressing these challenges requires a combination of climate solutions focused on both mitigation and adaptation. Solutions like expanding green infrastructure with urban parks and green roofs, and promoting sustainable development through energy-efficient buildings and transit-friendly design could all play a vital role in strengthening climate resilience.

As the planet warms, where we live – and how we live there – is rapidly being redefined.

Bees and urban wildflowers

Urban wildflowers may threaten bees in some cases

Post-industrial cities often have large numbers of vacant lots, left behind as people have moved out of the area.  Local residents are often tempted to plant wildflowers to make these deserted spaces more attractive. 

Wildflowers are an important food source for bees.  Pollinators like bees play a vital role in food production and attracting them with food sources is a good idea.  However, a study by researchers at the University of Cambridge in the UK found that there are dangers associated with planting wildflowers in some urban settings.

Wildflowers growing on land previously used for buildings and factories can accumulate lead, arsenic, and other metal contaminants from the soil.  These metals have previously been shown to damage the health of pollinators that ingest the metals in the nectar as they feed.

The Cambridge study was carried out in Cleveland, Ohio, which has nearly 34,000 vacant lots.  Cleveland was previously the site of iron and steel production, oil refining, and car manufacturing.  The researchers tested the nectar from flowering plants growing on disused land throughout the city.  Lead was the contaminant found in the highest concentrations.  They also found that different species of plants accumulate different amounts and different types of metals.

The goal of the study was not to discourage the planting of wildflowers in towns and cities.  It is to highlight the importance of growing the right species of wildflowers as well as to encourage testing soils for metals before planting wildflowers and to clean up pollution.  Wildflowers are important for pollinators, but it is also important that they don’t contribute to the decline of pollinator populations that has already been happening for a number of reasons.

Hot water in Boise

Geothermal water systems in Boise form the foundation of what is the largest municipally-run geothermal system in the country

Boise is the capital of Idaho, and the Idaho Statehouse is the only one in the United States to use geothermal heat.  Geothermal heating is possible in Boise because of fault lines that expose its groundwater to hot rocks.  The underground water supply in Boise is heated to around 170 degrees Fahrenheit.  It is the basis of the largest municipally-run geothermal system in the country.

People in Boise began using this natural resource to supply heat to buildings in the 1890s by drilling wells into aquifers that yielded hundreds of thousands of gallons of piping hot water a day.  The water heated pools and public baths, a Victorian mansion, and, eventually, hundreds of homes in what was called the Boise Warm Springs Water District.

The number of buildings that the city of Boise heats with its geothermal resource has grown more than sixfold over the past 40 years.  The water is drawn from wells in the nearby foothills and pumped into a closed-loop network of pipes that reach into buildings.  In each building, the geothermal heat is transferred to water in separate adjoining pipes that distribute the heat throughout the building.  The well water goes back to the aquifer to be heated again.

Today, there are four separately run geothermal water systems in Boise.  One is run by the city, another by the Boise Warm Springs District, and two others that serve the Capitol and Veterans Affairs Buildings.

In 2024, city officials calculated that using geothermal heat reduced annual carbon dioxide emissions by 7,000 tons, the equivalent of removing 1,500 gas-powered cars from the road each year.

Rising seas are destroying buildings

Alexandria is the second largest city in Egypt and is the largest city on the Mediterranean coast.  Its history goes back over 2,300 years and it was once home to a lighthouse that was among the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and a Great Library that was the largest in the ancient world.  The modern city has more than 6 million residents but still has many historic buildings and ancient monuments.  But perhaps not for long.

Rising seas and intensifying storms are taking a toll on the ancient port city.  For centuries, Alexandria’s historic structures have endured earthquakes, storm surges, tsunamis, and more.  They are truly marvels of resilient engineering.  But now, climate change is undoing in decades what took millennia for humans to create.

Over the past two decades, the number of buildings collapsing in Alexandria has risen tenfold.   Buildings are collapsing from the bottom up as a rising water table weakens soil and erodes foundations.  Since 2001, Alexandria has seen 290 buildings collapse.  Comparing present-day satellite imagery with decades-old maps, the authors of a study by the Technical University of Munich have tracked the retreat of Alexandria’s shorelines to determine where seas have intruded into groundwater. The authors say that more than 7,000 buildings in Alexandria are at risk.  They call for building sand dunes and planting trees along the coast to block encroaching seawater.

The true cost of this gradual destruction goes far beyond bricks and mortar.  This is the gradual disappearance of historic coastal cities.  Alexandria is a warning for such cities around the world.

Green grout for stabilizing buildings

Developing a green grout for buildings

We are all familiar with the grout that is used for tiles in our homes. We are less familiar with grout that is used to stabilize the soil beneath buildings.  Grouting is a process of ground improvement by injecting materials that can fill voids and cracks, strengthen and increase the bearing capacity of soil, and reduce permeability.

Traditional grouting methods have environmental downsides.  Most often, silica-based chemical grouts are used, and they are produced through energy-intensive processes that contribute substantially to carbon dioxide emissions.  As is the case for all materials and practices of the construction industry, developing sustainable, low-emission alternatives to conventional grouting materials has become an important priority.

Researchers from the Shibaura Institute of Technology in Japan have developed an innovative new grout material called Colloidal Silica Recovered from Geothermal Fluids.  This grout material enhances soil stabilization and simultaneously reduces the environmental impact of geothermal energy harvesting.

Geothermal energy production generates large amounts of silica-rich waste fluids which creates challenges for its maintenance and disposal.  The new grout repurposes this waste material thereby transforming an industrial byproduct into a valuable construction material.

The new grout material is particularly valuable in earthquake-prone regions, where soil stabilization is essential in preventing structural damage during seismic events.  In addition, the grout’s superior water-sealing properties makes it ideal for underground construction projects like tunnels, subways, and basements.  The new grout in an important step for the construction industry’s efforts to achieve carbon neutrality.

Rats and climate change

Rat populations are exploding as temperatures warm

Human activity has made rats one of the most prolific mammals on the planet. Our waste, buildings, and ships provide food, shelter, and transport.  In the United States alone, rats cost the country approximately $27 billion each year in damage to infrastructure, crops, and contaminated food supplies. Additionally, rats carry and spread over 50 zoonotic pathogens and parasites, impacting public health around the world.

Now, climate change is adding to the problem. According to a new study recently published in the journal Science Advances, urban rat populations are exploding as global temperatures rise.  The researchers found that Washington DC, San Francisco, Toronto, New York City, and Amsterdam had the greatest population increases.  In fact, over the past decade, rats increased by a whopping 390% in Washington DC, 300% in San Francisco, 186% in Toronto, and 162% in New York City.  The study, which examined data from 16 cities globally, found that 11 of them showed significant increases in rat numbers.

Only Tokyo, Louisville, and New Orleans bucked the trend with declining rat numbers.

According to the researchers, the best pest management strategies involve making the urban environment less rat-friendly as opposed to removing rodents that are already there.  An example would be putting trash in containers instead of bags on the street. 

There aren’t many perks to the changing climate – unless, of course, you’re a rat.

Storing carbon in buildings

According to a new study by researchers at the University of California, Davis and Stanford University, construction materials used in buildings have the potential to lock away billions of tons of carbon dioxide.  The study, published in Science, shows that storing CO2 in buildings could be a major contributor to efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Overall efforts in carbon sequestration take carbon dioxide – either as it’s being produced or once it’s already in the atmosphere – and store it away.  Storing it might involve injecting it into underground caverns or deep in the ocean.  Alternatively, storing it might involve converting it into a stable form using chemical reactions.  These various strategies involve both practical challenges and potential environmental risks.

The new study suggests that many materials that are already produced in large quantities have the potential to store carbon dioxide.  These include concrete, asphalt, plastics, wood, and brick.  More than 30 billion tons of these materials are produced worldwide every year.

Ways to accomplish carbon storage include adding biochar into concrete, using artificial rocks loaded with carbon as concrete and asphalt aggregates, plastic and asphalt binders based on biomass instead of petroleum, and including biomass fiber into bricks. 

The largest potential is using carbonated aggregates to make concrete.  Concrete is by far the world’s most popular building material with more than 20 billion tons being produced each year.

The feedstocks for these ways to store carbon in building materials are mostly low-value waste materials, so the economics of implementing these carbon sequestering strategies are likely to be quite favorable.

Neighborhood geothermal energy

Residential geothermal energy makes use of the constant, year-round temperature of the earth below the surface to efficiently provide both heating and cooling for a home.  In the summer, the cool earth beneath a house sits at about 55 degrees and can be tapped into with a heat pump to provide cooling.  In the winter, that 55-degree underground expanse provides a much warmer source of air to heat instead of the often freezing-cold air outside.  Geothermal systems are appealing because they use far less energy than other sources of heating and cooling.

Using geothermal energy to heat and cool buildings is nothing new.  But after years of planning and months of drilling into the ground, the first neighborhood-scale geothermal heating and cooling project has come online in Framingham, Massachusetts.

The project ties together 31 residential and five commercial buildings that share the underground infrastructure needed to heat and cool them.  This sort of shared geothermal system has previously been used on college campuses and similar places, but never before across a neighborhood in the United States.

The $14 million project, built by Eversource, broke ground in June 2023, and comprises 90 boreholes or wells drilled 600-700 feet underground. Approximately 135 customers are connected to the system, including low- and moderate-income customers, apartment buildings, a gas station, and a kitchen cabinet showroom.

A total of 13 states, including Massachusetts and New York, are considering pilot projects or advancing legislation that would allow gas utilities to develop networked geothermal heating and cooling.

Food, timber, and climate change

Food and timber production will increasing be in conflict with one another as the climate warms

The sights of coffee plantations in California and vineyards in Britain are becoming more common as the climate changes. But behind what sounds like a success story is a sobering one: climate change is shifting the regions suitable for growing food all around the world. 

According to a new study by researchers from the University of Cambridge, as crop growing shifts northwards, a squeeze will be put on the land needed to produce timber.  The timber these trees produce is used to make everything from paper and cardboard to furniture and buildings.

According to the study, which was recently published in the journal Nature Climate Change, more than 25% of existing forestry land – an area equivalent in size to India – will become more suitable for agriculture by the end of the century if climate change continues unabated.  Approximately 90% of this current forestry land is located in Canada, China, Russia, and the United States.    

Global timber production is worth more than $1.5 trillion every year.  Recent heat waves and wildfires have caused huge losses of timber forests around the world. 

According to the World Bank, the value of the global food system is estimated to be roughly $8 trillion annually.  Scientists expect climate change to cause some areas to become too hot for growing food, particularly in the tropics and southern Europe. 

With the global demand for food and the global demand for wood both projected to double by 2050, the increasing climate change-driven competition between the two is set to be an emerging issue in the coming decades.

Making wind turbines safer for birds

Making wind turbines safer for birds

There are people who oppose the installation of wind turbines for a variety of reasons. It is true that wind turbines can be dangerous to birds.  Estimates are that about 250,000 birds are killed flying into wind turbines each year in the U.S.  

However, this data needs to be looked at in comparison to bird deaths from flying into electrical lines (25 million), vehicles (214 million), and building glass (at least 600 million). And even these figures pale in comparison to the more than 2 billion birds killed by domestic cats each year.

Despite these facts, it would still be great if fewer birds died from flying into wind turbines.  Researchers at Oregon State University are part of a team looking at reducing bird collision risks from wind turbines by painting a single blade of the turbine black.

Recent research in Norway found that painting a single turbine blade black reduced the number of bird collisions by nearly 72%.  Why should this work?  The hypothesis is that the black-painted blades disrupt the visual uniformity of the airspace around the turbines and makes them more noticeable to birds, which prompts avoidance behavior.

The Norwegian data is based on a relatively small sample size and the Oregon State researchers as well as others in Spain, Sweden, and South Africa are working on more rigorous and comprehensive studies.

The hope is that this rather simple strategy could make windfarms safer for birds.  Unfortunately, this approach is not likely to be very effective with bats, which rely more on auditory cues rather than visual cues.

Fireflies are in decline

Fireflies are in decline in North America

If you are seeing fewer fireflies each year, you’re not alone.  Like many insects, firefly populations are in decline.  A new study by researchers from the University of Kentucky, Bucknell University, Penn State University, and the USDA has shed some light on the precarious situation facing firefly populations across North America. 

The research team used a mix of field surveys from citizen scientists and advanced machine learning techniques to analyze more than 24,000 surveys from the Firefly Watch citizen science initiative.  The study, which was recently published in the journal Science of the Total Environment, identified the factors likely responsible for the declines in firefly populations. 

The research team found that fireflies are sensitive to various environmental factors, from short-term weather conditions to longer climatic trends.  Fireflies thrive in temperate and tropical climates.  As global temperatures rise, these conditions become less predictable and less hospitable.

Light pollution is another threat to fireflies.  Artificial light at night – from things like street lights and billboards – is particularly disruptive to fireflies as it interferes with their bioluminescent communication essential for mating.

Urban growth, including buildings, roads, and sidewalks, poses another significant threat to fireflies by overtaking their natural habitats and decreasing available breeding areas. 

Additionally, certain agricultural practices seem to contribute to the decline of fireflies. 

According to the research team, reducing light pollution, preserving natural habitats, and implementing wildlife-friendly agricultural practices are conservation measures that could help mitigate the decline of fireflies.

How to make cities cooler

Green spaces and waterways help keep cities cool

In cities, the air, surface, and soil temperatures are almost always warmer than in rural areas. This is known as the urban heat island effect.  Urban heat islands occur when cities replace natural land cover with dense concentrations of pavement, buildings, and other surfaces that absorb and retain heat.

Urban planners around the world have been researching ways to reduce the effects of heat in cities.  For example, trees, green roofs, and vegetation can help reduce urban heat island effects by shading building surfaces, deflecting radiation from the sun, and releasing moisture into the atmosphere.

A new study led by researchers from the University of Surrey in the U.K. has analyzed how well various green spaces and waterways are able to cool down cities.  The study, which was recently published in the journal The Innovation, found that wetlands, parks, and even botanical gardens are among the best ways to keep cities cool.   

In fact, the researchers found that botanical gardens can cool city air by a whopping 9°F during heatwaves on average.  Wetlands can cool city air by 8.5°F on average, followed by rain gardens at 8.1°F, green walls at 7.4°F, street trees at 6.8°F, city farms at 6.3°F, city parks at 5.8°F, and reservoirs and playgrounds at 5.2°F. 

The researchers also found that cities can unlock even greater benefits by connecting green spaces into green corridors.  Greening projects can also help remove carbon emissions and prevent flooding.

The research team hopes its findings will help urban planners design more resilient cities.

Lower carbon emissions in the U.S.

Carbon emissions in the United States are slowly falling

American greenhouse gas emissions in 2023 fell by 1.9%.  In total, U.S. emissions have now fallen by over 17% since 2005.  The largest factor in the decline has been the reduction in the burning of coal to produce electricity.  Coal-fired generation has fallen to its lowest level in half a century.

There was a huge drop in emissions at the start of the covid pandemic when large segments of the economy shut down.  But then there was a sharp rebound in emissions in the following two years when economic activity resumed.  But over the long term, American emissions have been trending downward as both cars and power plants have become cleaner and greener.

The decline in emissions is a good thing but hasn’t been nearly enough to meet the nation’s goals for trying to slow down global warming.  The U.S. has a goal of reducing emissions by 2030 to half of the 2005 level.  To achieve that goal, annual emissions would have to fall more than three times faster than they did last year for the rest of the decade.

The emissions data used for the current assessment included those from transportation, electricity generation, industry, and buildings.  It did not include pollution from agriculture, which accounts for about 10% of the nation’s greenhouse gases.

The 2022 Inflation Reduction Act provided record amounts of money for low-emissions technologies like solar panels, wind turbines, nuclear reactors, electric vehicles, and hydrogen fuels.  The full impact of these federal investments has yet to be seen, since many companies are still ramping up their efforts in clean energy.  How quickly emissions will fall as these efforts come to fruition remains to be seen.

Buildings and birds

Birds face a wide range of dangers.  Billions of them each year face violent deaths.  Concerned individuals point at such things as wind turbines, which in fact do kill hundreds of thousands of birds.  But the great majority of bird deaths are caused by cats.  And that’s a danger that isn’t going to go away.

The second largest cause of bird deaths is collisions with building windows.   Building collisions kill hundreds of millions of birds each year in the U.S. alone.  As other places have seen glass skyscrapers proliferate, such as in Chinese cites, these collisions have become a major global factor in bird mortality.

There are growing efforts across the U.S. and Canada to reduce bird collisions.  Many businesses are taking part in “lights out” programs in which their buildings dim lights during spring and fall migrations.  Some buildings now use special glass that birds can see and avoid.  Some communities even have adopted ordinances that require bird-friendly glass in new construction.  Keeping bird attractants away from windows is another important way to reduce bird strikes.  All these measures have been proven to be effective in reducing the number of bird collisions.

 Companies sell vinyl film with tiny dots that can be affixed to windows.  Both businesses and homeowners have seen substantial reduction in bird collisions with such films installed.

Bird collisions are not a new problem but is one that wasn’t really taken seriously until at least the 1970s.  There isn’t much to be done about the greatest threat to birds – namely cats – but how buildings are constructed and operated is something we can control.

Upcycling Plastic Waste | Earth Wise

People have generated 8 billion tons of plastic waste over time and less than 10% of it has been recycled.  Millions of tons of it escapes into the oceans.  Plastic piles up virtually everywhere on earth.

There are many approaches to dealing with the plastic waste problem and no one of them is a magic bullet.  Engineers at Stanford University have investigated the prospects for upcycling plastic waste for use in infrastructure like buildings and roads.

They used a mix of computer modeling, scientific research, experimental and field data to analyze the potential for using plastic waste in infrastructure.

Among their findings is that recycled glass fiber reinforced polymer composite – which is a tensile plastic commonly used in car, boat, and plane parts – is a promising material for reuse in buildings. 

Roads in which waste plastic is melted down and mixed with conventional paving materials are becoming more common around the world.  India has installed over 60,000 miles of these roads.  Studies show that roads containing waste plastic have the potential to perform better than conventional roads.  They can last longer, are more durable, can tolerate wide temperature swings, and are more resistant to water damage, cracking, and potholes.  Such roads rely less upon virgin fossil resources, which is obviously advantageous.

Upcycling plastic waste in infrastructure is attracting increasing interest because it creates value from something that is strictly a liability and may end up having regulatory advantages as societies move toward more environmentally friendly and sustainable policies.

Aquifer thermal energy storage a solution to heat and cool buildings

About 12% of the energy consumed by humanity is used to heat and cool homes and businesses.  A study by researchers at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and Princeton University looked at a novel approach to making use of underground water to maintain comfortable temperatures and reduce consumption of natural gas and electricity.

The idea is to use aquifer thermal energy storage (known as ATES) to provide both heat in the winter and cooling in the summer.  The concept leverages the heat-absorbing property of water and natural geological features.  The idea is to pump up water from existing underground reservoirs and heat it at the surface using environmental heat or even excess energy from solar or wind generation.  Then the warm water is pumped back down. It stays warm for a long time – even months – because the earth is a good insulator.  When the water is pumped back up in the winter, it is much hotter than the ambient air and can be used to supply heat to buildings.

Alternately, water can be pumped up and cooled in the winter and then put back down underground and stored until cooling is needed in the summer months.

This technology has not been used much in the US, but it is gaining recognition internationally, particularly in the Netherlands.  It can perform very well in areas with large seasonal fluctuations.

The research study used modeling and various simulations to estimate how much energy ATES could save on the US grid.  The results showed that adding ATES to the grid could reduce consumption of petroleum products for heating and  cooling by up to 40%.  The system could also help prevent blackouts by reducing high power demand during extreme weather events.

City Greenery And Carbon Emissions | Earth Wise

According to the United Nations, more than half of the world’s population currently lives in cities.  Projections show that the combination of urbanization and global population growth could add another 2.5 billion people to cities by 2050. 

Unsurprisingly, cities are a major contributor to climate change.  According to U.N. estimates, cities are responsible for 75% of global carbon dioxide emissions, with transportation and buildings being among the largest contributors. 

According to a new study of vegetation across New York City and some adjoining urban areas, photosynthesis by trees and grasses on many summer days absorbs all the carbon emissions produced by cars, trucks and buses, and then some.  In fact, on many summer days, the total carbon uptake in the region equaled up to 40% of a summer afternoon’s total emissions from all sources in the City. The results, which were recently published in the journal Environmental Research Letters, further highlights the critical importance of urban greenery.

Most previous studies have analyzed the carbon uptake of vegetation by looking at the contiguous tracts of green spaces, but this only comprises about 10% of metro areas.  Using detailed aerial radar imagery of New York City that mapped vegetation in unprecedented 6-inch grids, the researchers were able to include the other 90% of the metro area typically left out in most models. 

Since carbon uptake by vegetation only occurs during the growing season, green spaces in cities situated in warmer climates likely play a larger role in carbon uptake. 

As city populations swell around the world, every bit of urban greenery is critical in the fight against climate change.
