Relocating endangered native plants

Climate change is endangering many native plant species.  As the climate warms, many species will need to establish themselves in new places that are more hospitable than their historic ranges.  But many native plants in the U.S. cannot move themselves by natural forces quickly enough to avoid climate-change driven extinction.  For such plants to survive into the future, they will need human help to move into adjacent areas, a process called “managed relocation.”

Such a process has its problems.  There is no guarantee that a plant will thrive in a new area.  On the other hand, relocating plant species historically has often had disastrous consequences.  Consider, for example, the story of kudzu in the American south.

Researchers at the University of Massachusetts Amherst have studied this problem in detail and reported the results in the journal Global Change Biology.

The issue is how to help plants move successfully without their causing harm in their new locations.  The study found that some plant traits can lead to success and some to ecological disaster.  In some cases, the same traits that help plants to establish themselves in a new location make them powerful invasive species.  Traits like having a large size predispose a plant to not only establish itself but spread wildly. 

The study recommends that people managing relocation need to focus on plants whose traits they have determined to be conducive to successful relocation but more unlikely to cause harm in their new environment.

The battle over wolves

Thirty years ago, wolves were reintroduced into Yellowstone National Park.  Grey wolves had almost disappeared entirely throughout the northern Rockies.  They were listed as endangered by the federal government since 1974.  The reintroduction was hailed as a wildly successful effort yielding significant benefits to Yellowstone’s ecosystems.

Since then, wolf populations have increased greatly across the West.  There are at least 7,000 or 8,000 wolves living in Western States.  But this conservation triumph is considered a plague by some residents of those states.   Wolves kill livestock, game animals, and sometimes pets.

Because of this backlash, federal protections have been lifted in some states, leaving wolf management up to state agencies.  Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, eastern Oregon, eastern Washington, and parts of Utah have no federal protections and hunting wolves is legal.  Initial, careful hunting quotas in some states have given way to widespread killing driven by anti-wolf sentiment. 

Emotions run high with regard to wolves, and unlike that of other protected species, the fate of wolves is a matter of politics rather than science or law.  State legislatures have gotten involved, often trying to prove that they hate wolves more than the next guy. 

Wolves are resilient animals and are likely to survive unless there is an organized government strategy like what took place in the 1900s with unlimited poisoning and shooting.  But experts note that wolf populations must persist at a high enough level in order to play important ecological roles.

Shrinking polar ice

Arctic sea ice has shrunk to near-historic lows during this Northern Hemisphere summer.  The minimum extent for the year occurred on September 11th.  Ice cover in the Arctic Ocean has been shrinking and thinning for more than 40 years.  The amount of frozen seawater in the Arctic goes up and down during the year as sea ice thaws and regrows between seasons.

This year, the minimal extent of sea ice shrank to 1.65 million square miles.  That’s about 750,000 square miles less than the average for late summer over the years between 1981 and 2010, representing a decrease of more than 30%.  The all-time low of 1.31 million square miles was actually set in 2012.  Sea ice coverage can fluctuate from year to year, but it has trended downward since it has started being tracked in the late 1970s.  The loss of sea ice has averaged about 30,000 square miles per year.

Sea ice extent has not only been shrinking; the ice has been getting younger and thinner.  Presently, the overwhelming majority of ice in the Arctic Ocean is first-year ice, which is thinner and less able to survive the warmer months.  There is far less ice that is three years or older.

Meanwhile, sea ice in the southern polar regions was also low this year.  In the sea around Antarctica, scientists are tracking near record-low sea ice at a time when it should have been growing extensively during the darkest and coldest months in the Southern Hemisphere.

Polar ice loss compounds polar ice loss.  The loss of sea ice increases heat in the polar regions, where temperatures have risen about four times more than the global average.

Rainfall and sea turtles

Rainfall has a major impact on sea turtles

There are seven species of sea turtles that inhabit the world’s oceans. Six of the seven sea turtle species – all of them except the flatback – are present in U.S. waters, and are listed as threatened or endangered under the Endangered Species Act. 

Sea turtles, which have been around for more than 100 million years, spend the majority of their lives in the ocean, but they do periodically come ashore to nest.  Female sea turtles lay their eggs in the sand and then return to the ocean.  Survival odds for sea turtle hatchlings are quite bleak.  In fact, only one out of every 1,000 makes it to adulthood. 

Research shows that both air and sand temperatures are critical for sea turtle hatchling development.  Cooler temperatures produce larger, heavier hatchlings with more males.  Hatchling size matters because larger hatchlings, which can move faster, are more likely to survive because they spend less time on risky beaches.  But rising temperatures might shorten incubation periods, and erratic rainfall can disrupt growth, potentially affecting survival.

A new international study by researchers from Florida Atlantic University and the University of Tübingen in Germany found that fluctuating rainfall patterns have a greater impact than changes in air temperature on sea turtle hatchling development. 

The results, which were recently published in the journal BMC Ecology and Evolution, reveal that the impact of rainfall varies between species.  As climate change shifts rainfall patterns, the impact on sea turtle nesting sites suggests that global conservation strategies for some species – like loggerhead and green sea turtles – likely need to be updated.

Mixed news for the Great Barrier Reef

Mixed news about the Great Barrier Reef

A prolonged and widespread coral bleaching event in Australia’s Great Barrier Reef has taken place this year.  It is the fifth such event over the past eight years and appears to be one of the worst ever.  According to preliminary analysis, 97% of corals in some areas of the northern part of the reef died as a result of the bleaching.  Over the entire length of the reef – which is more than 1,200 miles long – bleaching was observed on 74% of the more than 1,000 individual reefs that make up the Great Barrier Reef.  Half of those observed recorded high or very high levels of bleaching, although less than 10% had extreme levels of bleaching.

Prior to this mass bleaching event, an extensive survey of the reef was conducted, and it provided some good news.  Coral cover had increased in all three regions on the Great Barrier Reef and was actually at regional highs in two of the three regions.  The surveys were completed before the passage of Tropic Cyclone Jasper in December 2023.

Bleached corals are very stressed, but they still remain alive for at least some period of time.  Some types of corals can remain bleached for months, hanging on like a hospital patient in critical condition, but then recover.  Depending upon water conditions going forward, it remains to be seen how much of the reef will survive the latest bleaching event.  The next survey season by the Australian Institute of Marine Science will commence in September.

In many ways, the reef has had some lucky escapes in recent years.  As marine heatwaves become increasingly common, its luck may eventually run out.

Cryopreserving corals

Recent climate models estimate that if the effects of climate change are not mitigated soon enough, 95% of the world’s corals could die by the mid 2030s.  Given the current rate of greenhouse gas emissions, this is an increasingly likely outcome.  Coral reefs are estimated to have a $10 trillion economic value apart from their essential role in marine ecosystems.

Researchers at the University of Hawaii at Manoa have demonstrated a successful technique for cryopreserving entire coral fragments; in other words, preserving coral using cold temperatures and successfully reviving them.

Existing coral cryopreservation techniques rely on freezing sperm and larvae, which can only be collected during spawning events, which occur only a few days each year for coral species.  This makes it logistically very challenging for researchers and conservationists.

The Hawaiian researchers focused on a process called isochoric vitrification, which is a method of freezing with liquid nitrogen that prevents the formation of ice crystals.  They tested the technique with thumbnail-sized fragments of coral, freezing them in small aluminum chambers which restrict the growth of ice crystals that would otherwise damage delicate polyp tissues.  Once the chambers were warmed, the fragments were transferred to seawater and allowed to recover.  They found that the revived corals behaved the same as those that were never cooled.

The process holds great promise to conserve the biodiversity and genetic diversity of coral.  If the process can be scaled up, it may be possible to preserve as many species of coral as possible by 2030, when it may no longer be viable for them to survive in the warming and acidifying oceans.

Can All Plant Species Survive? | Earth Wise

Many animal populations around the world are struggling and people are mostly to blame.  Species are declining because of all sorts of things including changes in land and sea use, pollution, invasive species, and climate change.

Like many animal species, plants are also struggling to adapt to a human-dominated world.  Plants provide the planet with food, oxygen, and energy, and are used to produce fibers, building materials, and medicines.  Even though plants are easier and cheaper to protect, they are often overlooked in conservation efforts. 

According to a paper recently published in the journal Trends in Plant Science, preventing all future land plant extinctions across the globe is possible with the right approaches.  The author of the paper, Richard Corlett of the Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden in China, writes that “if zero extinction is potentially achievable for plants, a less ambitious target would be inexcusable.” 

According to the paper, one big barrier in plant conservation is the lack of trained specialists, especially in tropical areas where there is a backlog of unidentified species.  It’s likely that many “dark extinctions,” which is when species slip away without us knowing they existed, have already occurred.

Another roadblock in preventing plant extinctions is information access, which can be solved by building an online “metaherbarium.”  This collaborative database would link digitized records from herbarium specimens with photographs, status assessments, and recovery plans.

Finally, the creation of “microreserves” – which are tiny pieces of protected land designed to get around space constraints – would further contribute to effective conservation of targeted plant species. 

Zero plant extinctions should be the goal.

Counting Trees | Earth Wise

Researchers have developed a new method for counting trees

Scientists estimate that there are about 3 trillion trees on the earth.  A huge number but probably half as many as there were before people entered the picture.  And we’re losing about 10 billion trees a year to toilet paper, timber, farmland expansion, and other human activity.  Trees play a crucial role in taking carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere and storing it away.  For this reason, trees have become an integral part of the effort to mitigate climate change.

There are major initiatives underway around the world to plant more trees.  Part of this is driven by the increasing use of carbon credits by companies trying to offset their carbon emissions.   These credits are earned by either planting new trees or paying farmers or other landowners not to cut down existing trees.  But how many trees are actually planted and how many survive over time?

Whether these efforts are really resulting in more trees and more carbon storage is not easy to determine.  Current international inventories of global tree-sequestered carbon are subject to great uncertainty.

Researchers from the University of Copenhagen and NASA have developed a method for mapping large numbers of trees and determining their carbon content.  Using artificial intelligence techniques to analyze ultra-high-resolution satellite images, they can count trees, determine their individual species, and measure their carbon content.

A study of images from Africa’s Sahel region found that it is home to nearly 10 billion trees that are currently storing 840 million tons of carbon.

Now that the groundwork for this new methodology is complete, it is ready to be deployed by public agencies, NGOs, and other interested in monitoring the numbers of trees and their carbon content.

How animals cope with wildfires

More than a century of fire suppression strategies coupled with climate change has led to wildfires that are much larger and more frequent than those of the past.  A question that arises is what happens to the animals in a region when a massive wildfire sweeps through the landscape?

For the most part, we don’t have much information on what animals do when the flames are burning or in the immediate days after the fire has ended.  By chance, a group of researchers from the University of California, Berkeley, the University of California, Santa Barbara, and the University of Washington had the opportunity to get that kind of information.

The researchers had been studying a group of black-tailed deer where the 2018 Mendocino Complex Fire occurred.  That megafire torched more than 450,000 acres in Northern California, including the site where the researchers were studying the movements and feeding patterns of the deer.

The researchers had to evacuate the area during the fire, but their cameras, tracking collars, and other equipment continued to function.  They learned that of the 18 deer studied, all survived.  Deer that had to flee the flames returned home, even though many areas were completely burned and devoid of vegetation to eat.  In fact, most of the deer returned within hours of the fire’s end while trees were still smoldering.   The researchers continue to monitor the deer to look at the long-term effects of the fire.

The researchers speculate that loyalty to home is a tactic that likely helped the species survive past wildfires.  Smaller fires encourage new vegetation growth, a tasty treat for deer.  Whether the strategy will pay off as fires get more intense and more frequent remains to be seen.

Surviving Climate Change | Earth Wise

What species will survive climate change?

The sixth mass extinction of wildlife on Earth is happening now.  According to an analysis published last year in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, more than 500 species of land animals are on the brink of extinction and are likely to be lost within the next 20 years. Without the impact of humans, this quantity of extinctions would have taken thousands of years. 

Anthropogenic climate change continues to exacerbate problems that drive species to the brink.  Which species will be able to adapt and survive?

Using genome sequencing, a research team from McGill University in Montreal has found that some fish, like the threespine stickleback, can adapt very rapidly to extreme seasonal changes. Known for their different shapes, sizes, and behaviors, stickleback fish can live in both saltwater and freshwater, and can tolerate a wide range of temperatures.

Stickleback fish, which can be found in different estuaries along coastal California, provided researchers with an opportunity to study natural selection in real-time.  The researchers analyzed six populations of threespine stickleback fish before and after seasonal changes to their environment.   The research team discovered evidence of genetic changes driven by the seasonal shifts in habitat that mirrored the differences found between long-established freshwater and saltwater populations.  Since these genetic changes occurred in independent populations over a single season, the study highlights just how quickly the effects of natural selection can be detected. 

These findings suggest that scientists may be able to use the genetic differences that evolved in the past as a way to predict how species may adapt to climate change in the future.

Seagrasses And Ocean Acidification | Earth Wise

Seagrass can buffer ocean acidification

Seagrasses are the basis of important marine ecosystems.   Sea turtles, bat rays, leopard sharks, fish, and harbor seals are just some of the marine creatures that visit seagrass ecosystems for the food and habitat they provide.  They are nursery grounds for many aquatic animals and many birds visit seagrass meadows to dine on what lives within them.  They may seem like slimy grasses that we walk through along some shorelines, but they are important.

These marine forests are valuable for many different reasons including climate mitigation and erosion control.  A third of the carbon dioxide emitted across the globe is absorbed by the ocean and seagrass meadows are an important carbon sink.

A new study, recently published in the journal Global Change Biology, investigated how seagrasses can buffer ocean acidification.  The six-year-long study found that these ecosystems can alleviate low ocean pH – that is, more acidic – conditions for extended periods of time, even at night in the absence of photosynthesis. 

In some places, the pH buffering from the seagrasses brings the local environments back to preindustrial pH conditions, like what the ocean might have experienced around the year 1750.

Seagrasses naturally absorb carbon as they photosynthesize when the sun is out, which drives the buffering ability.  The study found the surprising result that the effects of pH buffering even persisted during the night, when there is no photosynthesis.

The study has implications for aquaculture management as well as climate change mitigation, and conservation and restoration efforts.  Globally, seagrass ecosystems are in decline.  These results show how important it is to help them survive and prosper.

Is There Hope For Coral Reefs?

News about the world’s coral reefs has been relentlessly bad for a number of years.  Warming, acidifying oceans have wreaked havoc with coral reefs leading to enormous losses.  Nowhere have things been more dire than in Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.  Coral bleaching events have been increasingly common and severe over the past two decades.  In fact, only 7% of the Great Barrier Reef has escaped bleaching entirely since 1998.

While the future of the world’s coral reefs is very much uncertain as global heating continues, there is a recent bit of hopeful news.   According to a study published in Nature Climate Change, the response of the Great Barrier Reef to the extreme temperatures in 2017 was quite different from that of the previous year in the aftermath of back-to-back bouts of coral bleaching.

Surprisingly, corals that bleached in 2016 but managed to survive were more resistant to the recurrence of hot conditions in 2017.

Many corals don’t survive bleaching events at all and, of course,those corals don’t bleach for a second time. But the surviving corals from the 2016 bleaching event were tougher species.   As a result of bleaching, the mix of coral species on the reef is changing very rapidly.  The net result was that there was less bleaching in 2017 even though the temperatures that year were even more extreme than in 2016.

There have now been four mass bleaching events on the Great Barrier Reef over the past 20 years and it is only a matter of time before another one occurs triggered by the next marine heatwave. Almost half of the corals on the northern two-thirds of the reef have been killed.  But at least some of the reef is showing impressive survival skills.

A Philippine Coral Reef Survives

One of the greatest coral reef ecosystems in the world, the Tubbataha Reef in the Philippines, continues to prosper.  Undersea coral walls that plunge more than 300 feet deep are home to some 600 species of fish and 360 kinds of coral, about half of all known species.  According to experts, the ocean wilderness of Tubbataha Reef is about the closest thing to a true natural state for any reef in the world.

Tiger Poaching

Last year, tiger poaching in India jumped to its highest levels in 15 years.   The spike was the result of killings by gangs of poachers, tigers being snared by locals trying to trap other animals for food, and by cutbacks in anti-poaching efforts because of budget cuts.

Widespread Local Extinctions

Plants and animals have evolved over time to live in specific environmental niches.  As the climate warms, parts of the ranges in which they live may no longer offer the conditions under which they can thrive.  Species can respond to these changes in three ways:   they can adapt to new conditions by undergoing niche shifts; they can relocate to better conditions, such as by moving to higher elevations or latitudes; or they can locally go extinct.

Wiping Out Wildlife
