Wilderness areas are strongholds for biodiversity.  They buffer and regulate local climates, and they support many of the world’s most politically and economically marginalized communities.  While there is a great deal of attention being paid to the loss of species around the world, there is relatively little focus on the loss of entire ecosystems.  Simply put, wilderness is on the decline, and it has been ever since human civilization began its inexorable expansion.

One of the crowning achievements for wildlife protection in the US was the establishment of the National Wildlife Refuge system in the 1930s, when the populations of waterfowl were perilously low. There are predictions that the world’s population could reach 10 billion by the year 2050.  Whether population growth can be slowed down enough to prevent this remains to be seen.  Regardless, it is clear that we need to figure out how to feed many more people than we have today and we are not even doing that good a job of feeding the current population.

The Hottest Year

2015 was the hottest year in the historical record, easily breaking the mark set only one year earlier.  The unusually large El Niño weather pattern is releasing enormous amounts of heat from the Pacific Ocean into the atmosphere, but climate scientists say that the bulk of the record-setting heat is due to the long-term warming effects of greenhouse gas emissions.  The global land surface temperature was 1.6°F above the 20th century historical average. That’s a huge jump from 2014, which was 1.3° above average.  That may sound like very little, but for the planet as a whole, it is extremely large.
