Many of the world’s biggest cities have miles of underground pipes built decades ago that provide district energy.   District energy systems use a central plant to produce steam, hot water or chilled water that is then piped underground to individual buildings for space heating, domestic hot water heating and air conditioning. As a result, individual buildings served by a district energy system don’t need their own boilers or furnaces, chillers or air conditioners.

The Hottest Year

2015 was the hottest year in the historical record, easily breaking the mark set only one year earlier.  The unusually large El Niño weather pattern is releasing enormous amounts of heat from the Pacific Ocean into the atmosphere, but climate scientists say that the bulk of the record-setting heat is due to the long-term warming effects of greenhouse gas emissions.  The global land surface temperature was 1.6°F above the 20th century historical average. That’s a huge jump from 2014, which was 1.3° above average.  That may sound like very little, but for the planet as a whole, it is extremely large.

We are all familiar with the solar panels that cover an ever-growing number of rooftops as well as large arrays in so-called solar farms.  These photovoltaic systems turn sunlight directly into electricity.  But they are not the only way to make electricity using the sun.

Anyone who has walked the streets of New York City or Washington, D.C. on a stifling summer day can attest to the fact that cities feel hotter.  It’s not a matter of perception.

The average surface temperature around the world has gone up over a degree over the past 40 years but some people argue that if the greenhouse effect was really at fault, the temperature rise would be much larger.
