Controlled Environment Agriculture | Earth Wise

The term “controlled environment agriculture” (or CEA) refers to any number of systems embodying a technology-based approach to farming.  CEA can range from simple shade structures to greenhouses to full indoor or vertical farms.  At the most advanced level, CEA systems are fully automated, closed loop systems with controlled lighting, water, and ventilation.   Many systems make use of hydroponics rather than traditional soil.

The goal of CEA systems is to provide optimum growing conditions for crops and prevent disease and pest damage. 

A recent study by the University of Surrey in the UK sought to understand the impact of using CEA systems to grow lettuce, which is a high-value crop that is often grown in such systems.

The study found that, on average, CEA methods produce double the crop yields compared to field-based agriculture.  They also found that the cultivation time of CEA yields was, on average, 40 days.  This compares with an average cultivation time of 60-120 days for field-based agriculture.  More specifically, production of lettuce using CEA was 50% faster in the summer and up to 300% faster in the winter.

Climate change presents many difficult challenges to society, not the least of which is its threat to food security.  Controlled environment agriculture could allow cultivation of crops in harsh environments and in the face of changing climates.  Quantifying the benefits CEA can have on yield and growth provides important information for advancing our understanding of where and when this technology can bring the most value to society.

Floating Sea Farms | Earth Wise

Researchers at the University of South Australia have designed a self-sustaining solar-driven system that turns seawater into fresh water and grows crops without any involvement.  In theory, such a system could help address the growing problems of freshwater shortages and inadequate food supplies as the world’s population continues to increase.

The system can be described as a vertical floating sea farm.  It is made up of two chambers:  an upper layer similar to a greenhouse and a lower chamber for water harvesting.

Clean water is supplied by an array of solar evaporators that soak up seawater, trap the salts in the evaporator body and, heated by the sun, release clean water vapor into the air which is then condensed on belts that transfer the water into the upper plant growth chamber.

The researchers tested the system by growing broccoli, lettuce and bok choi on seawater surfaces without maintenance or additional clean water irrigation.  The system was powered entirely by solar light.

The design is only a proof-of-concept at this point.   The next step is to scale it up using an array of individual devices to increase plant production. 

The futuristic potential for such technology would be huge farm biodomes floating on the ocean.  The UN estimates that by 2050, nearly 2.5 billion people are likely to experience water shortages while the global supply of water for irrigation is expected to decline by 19%.  Nearly 98% of the world’s water is in the oceans.  Harnessing the sea and the sun to address growing global shortages could be the way to go.

Plants Make Sounds | Earth Wise

Some people talk to their plants.  It is highly unlikely that the plants are listening, but recent research has found that plants are doing quite a bit of talking of their own.

It turns out that plant emit a variety of click-like sounds, especially when they are stressed in some way, such as being dehydrated or injured.  The sounds are actually fairly loud – comparable to the volume of human speech – but occur at frequencies well above the range of human hearing.

The study at Tel Aviv University in Israel monitored plants in a greenhouse that were subjected to various stresses over time.  Unstressed plants emitted less than one sound per hour, on average, while stressed plants emitted dozens of sounds every hour.

Recordings of the plant sounds were analyzed by specially developed artificial intelligence algorithms.  The algorithms learned how to distinguish between different plants and different types of sounds.  Eventually, they could identify the plant and determine the type and level of stress from the recordings.  They could even do this in a greenhouse with a great deal of background noise.

The study resolved a very old scientific controversy about whether plants emit sounds.  Not only do they, but the sounds contain useful information.  We don’t yet know what the mechanism is for plant sounds.  It is likely that in nature, the sounds are detected by various animals and perhaps even plants that can detect the high frequencies.  And perhaps they react to them as part of seeking food, shelter, or other services that plants provide.  Given the right tools, we humans may also be able to make use of the sounds being made by plants.

Peatlands And Greenhouse Gas Emissions | Earth Wise

Peatlands play a significant role in greenhouse gas emissions

As the world seeks to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions that have been warming the climate, most of the focus has been on the primary contributors to the problem, such as the burning of fossil fuels.  But there are many smaller contributors to greenhouse gas emissions that individually play only a minor role but collectively add up to significant amounts.  One of these is the emissions from peatlands.

Peatlands are a type of wetland that occur in almost every country on Earth, covering 3% of the global land surface.  They are terrestrial ecosystems in which waterlogged conditions prevent plant material from fully decomposing.  As a result, the production of organic matter exceeds its decomposition, which results in a net accumulation of peat.  Peatlands are, in fact, the largest natural terrestrial carbon store, storing more over 700 billion tons of carbon, more than all other types of vegetation combined.

Human activity, such as creating drainage in peatlands for agriculture and forest plantation, results in the release of over 1.6 billion tons of CO2 into the atmosphere each year. This constitutes 3% of all global greenhouse gas emissions caused by human activities.

Large numbers of people rely on peatlands for their livelihoods, so it is not reasonable for these emission-generating activities to be greatly curtailed.  But researchers at the University of Leicester in the UK analyzed the potential effects of cutting the current drainage depths in croplands and grasslands on peat in half and showed that this could reduce CO2 emissions by more than 500 million tons a year. This equates to one percent of all greenhouse gas emissions caused by human activities.

There are numerous opportunities to reduce emissions a little bit at a time.

Solar Cell Greenhouses | Earth Wise

Using solar panel technology for greenhouses

A recent study at North Carolina State University has shown that it can be feasible to use see-through solar panels in greenhouses to generate electricity.  The idea is to use semi-transparent solar panels on greenhouses that allow some of the light to get in for the plants to grow while making the greenhouses energy neutral or even allowing them to generate more power than they use.

The question is how the semi-transparent solar panels might affect greenhouse crops.  To investigate this issue, researchers grew crops of red leaf lettuce from seed to full maturity under a standard set of growing conditions – temperature, water, fertilizer, and CO2 concentration – but varied the light they get. 

A control group was exposed to the full spectrum of white light while three experimental groups were exposed to light through different types of filters that absorbed the particular wavelengths of light that would be absorbed by different types of semitransparent solar cells.

The researchers paid close attention to characteristics of the lettuce that are important to growers, grocers, and consumers:  general appearance, leaf number, leaf size, and weight.  The results were that the lettuce produced using all three kinds of filtered light was essentially identical to that produced in the control group.    Further research is underway looking at how harvesting various wavelengths of light affects biological processes for lettuces, tomatoes, and other crops.

Getting growers to use solar-powered greenhouses would be very difficult if doing so would result in a loss of productivity.  But given these experimental results, it appears as though the decision will boil down to a simple economic argument about whether the investment in new greenhouse technology would be offset by energy production and its resultant savings.

Hacking Photosynthesis | Earth Wise

A team led by the University of Illinois has been pursuing a project called Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency or RIPE, which has the aim of improving photosynthesis in order to provide farmers with higher-yielding crops in an increasingly challenging climate.  Photosynthesis is the natural, sunlight-powered process that plants use to convert carbon dioxide into sugars that fuel growth, development, and for us, crop yield.

If we think of photosynthesis as a factory line composed of multiple machines, the growth of plants is limited by the slowest machines in the line.  The RIPE project has identified some steps in photosynthesis that are slower than others and are attempting to enable plants to build more machines to speed up those slower steps.

The researchers modeled a total of 170 steps in the process of photosynthesis to identify how plants could manufacture sugars more efficiently.  In the study, the team increased crop growth by 27% by resolving two constraints:  one in the first part of photosynthesis where plants turn light energy into chemical energy and one in the second part when carbon dioxide is turned into sugars.

The researchers effectively hacked photosynthesis by adding a more efficient transport protein from algae to enhance the energy conversion process. 

In the greenhouse, these changes improved crop productivity by 52%, but in field trials, which are a more important test, these photosynthetic hacks boosted crop production by 27%.

Ultimately, the team hopes to translate these discoveries to a series of staple food crops, such as cassava, cowpea, corn, soybean and rice, which are needed to feed the world’s growing population this century.

According to a European food safety watchdog, most applications of neonicotinoids – the world’s most widely used insecticides – represent a risk to wild bees and honeybees.  The use of these insecticides has been restricted in Europe since 2014 following earlier risk assessments.

A CO2 Vacuum Cleaner

A new carbon capture plant, sitting on top of a waste incineration facility near Zurich, Switzerland, is now sucking CO2 out of the air to sell to its first customer.  The plant opened on May 31, and is the first commercial enterprise of its kind.
