Harmful algal blooms and climate change

Harmful algal blooms are occurring more frequently as the climate warms

An algal bloom is a rapid increase in the density of algae in an aquatic system.  Harmful algal blooms occur when bodies of water get overloaded with nitrogen and phosphorus runoff from agriculture and other human activities. These excess nutrients can facilitate the out-of-control growth of cyanobacteria, also known as blue-green algae. 

Some species of blue-green algae produce a toxin called microcystin.  These toxins pose a serious health hazard to people, animals, and the environment.  Microcystin affects liver function and can cause death in animals, as well as humans in rare instances.  A notable incident occurred in the summer of 2014, when cyanobacteria contamination in Lake Erie left 500,000 residents in Ohio and Michigan without water for 72 hours and sickened more than 100 people. 

According to a study led by researchers from Carnegie Science, as climate change warms the earth, higher-latitude regions will be at a greater risk for microcystin produced by algal blooms.  The study found water temperatures of 68 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit as being at the greatest risk for developing dangerous levels of microcystin. 

In the study, which was published in the journal Nature Water, the research team also demonstrated that the areas most susceptible to high toxin concentrations will continue to move northward. And in some areas, researchers say the relative risk of exceeding water quality guidelines will increase by up to 50% in the coming decades.

The research team hopes its findings raise more awareness about water sustainability, and the need to focus on the quality of the water as much as the quantity of water.

Air pollution and human health

Climate change is making air quality worse in many parts of the world. Rising temperatures increase ground-level ozone, and more frequent wildfires release harmful smoke and particulates into the air. These changes, combined with ongoing pollution from sources like vehicle exhaust and industrial emissions, lead to longer and more intense episodes of unhealthy air.

A new study led by researchers from the University of Toronto in Canada examined more than 600 people and found that long-term exposure to air pollution is associated with early signs of heart damage.  The research, which was recently published in the journal Radiology, indicates that fine particulate matter in the air may contribute to diffuse myocardial fibrosis, a form of scarring in the heart muscle that can precede heart failure. 

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death worldwide. 

Long-term exposure to common air pollutants is also linked to a significantly higher risk of dementia.  A separate study by researchers from the University of Cambridge in the UK analyzed data from nearly 30 million people and found that for every 10 micrograms of fine particulate matter per cubic meter of air, the risk of dementia increases by 17%.  The study, which was recently published in The Lancet Planetary Health, found that exposure to nitrogen dioxide and soot was also strongly associated with an increased risk of dementia.

Dementia is estimated to affect more than 57 million people worldwide, a number that is expected to swell to 152 million by 2050.

Strengthening efforts to reduce air pollution could make a real difference for the environment and human health.

New Orleans is sinking

As climate change accelerates, rising sea levels are putting coastal communities at greater risk of flooding and storm surge. Driven by melting glaciers and warming oceans, global sea levels are rising at an increasing rate. For low-lying cities like New Orleans, even small increases can have serious consequences. And that risk is compounded by another factor: the land itself is sinking.

Much of New Orleans already sits at or below sea level, and parts of the city and its surrounding wetlands are gradually sinking. While most of the city remains stable, a new study by researchers from Tulane University suggests that sections of the region’s $15 billion post-Katrina flood protection system may require ongoing upgrades to keep pace with long-term subsidence.

The study, recently published in the journal Science Advances, used satellite data to track changes in ground elevation across Greater New Orleans between 2002-2020.  The researchers found that some areas – including neighborhoods, wetlands, and even concrete floodwalls – are sinking by more than an inch each year. In some spots, the land is dropping by nearly two inches annually.

Alarmingly, some of the concrete floodwalls and levees built to protect the city after Hurricane Katrina are themselves sinking. In a few cases, they are losing elevation faster than sea levels are rising, reducing their capacity to block storm surges.

The study highlights how satellite monitoring can play a critical role in guiding infrastructure maintenance and urban planning – not just in New Orleans – but in vulnerable coastal cities around the world.

Modeling geoengineering

Modeling the impacts of geoengineering

As the impacts of climate change continue to mount up, there is increasing interest in radical intervention measures designed to keep a lid on rising global temperatures.  Such measures are fraught with potential dangers and unintended consequences but there is no guarantee that one or another of them might still be attempted in the future.  Increasing international interest in geoengineering as a potential strategy for mitigating climate change has created a pressing need to consider its impact before any potentially irreversible actions are taken.

The Natural Environment Research Council in the UK is funding four research projects aimed at understanding the potential consequences of solar radiation modification (SRM) being deployed in the real world.

SRM consists of methods to reflect some of the Sun’s radiation back into space instead of allowing it to reach and warm the earth. 

One approach is stratospheric aerosol intervention in which particles such as sulfates are introduced into the upper atmosphere to reflect sunlight thereby producing a dimming effect.   The idea is to mimic the effects of large volcanic eruptions, which naturally send sulfates into the atmosphere.

A second approach is marine cloud brightening, which increases the reflectivity of clouds over the ocean by spraying very small droplets of sea water into the air.  The fine particles of sea salt enhance cloud condensation nuclei, producing more cloud droplets and making clouds more reflective.

The research aims to deliver independent risk analyses to inform policymakers about the potential environmental impacts of SRM.

Microplastics and antibiotic resistance

Microplastics are a real problem.  They are pretty much everywhere.  They are in our food, in the oceans, on mountains, up in the clouds, and most alarmingly, in our bodies.  All of that is already bad news, but researchers at Boston University have found that microplastics may also be contributing to antibiotic resistance in dangerous bacteria.

The researchers observed that bacteria exposed to microplastics become resistant to multiple types of antibiotics commonly used to treat infections.  Bacteria can become resistant to antibiotics for a number of reasons, including misuse and overprescribing of medications.  However, a major factor influencing antibiotic resistance is the microenvironment – the immediate surroundings of a microbe – which is where bacteria and viruses replicate.

The Boston University study tested how the common bacterium E. coli reacted to being in a closed environment with microplastics.  The plastics provide a surface that the bacteria can attach to and colonize.  When attached to a surface, bacteria create a sticky substance called a biofilm that acts like a shield, protecting the bacteria and keeping them affixed securely.  The tests showed that microplastics supercharged the biofilms so much that when antibiotics were introduced, they were unable to penetrate the shield.

Microplastics are everywhere, but they are especially prevalent in impoverished places where sanitation may be limited.  Refugees, asylum seekers, and forcibly displaced populations are already at increased risk of contracting drug-resistant infections.  The prevalence of microplastics adds another risk to the already difficult lives of these people.

New highs for carbon dioxide

New highs reached for global carbon dioxide emissions

Last year was the hottest year on record and the ten hottest years on record have in fact been the last ten years.  Ocean heat reached a record high last year and, along with it, global sea levels.  Those are rising twice as fast as they did in the 1990s.

The World Meteorological Organization reports that the global atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide reached a new observed high in 2023, which is the latest year for which global annual figures are available.  The level was 420 ppm, which is the highest level it has been in 800,000 years. 

The increase in carbon dioxide levels was the fourth largest one-year change since modern measurement began in the 1950s.  The rate of growth is typically higher in El Niño years because of increases from fire emissions and reduced terrestrial carbon sinks.

Concentrations of methane and nitrous oxide – which are two other key greenhouse gases – also reached record high observed levels in 2023.  Levels of both of these gases have also continued to increase in 2024.

The annually averaged global mean near-surface temperature in 2024 was 1.55 degrees Celsius above the 1850-1900 average.  Apart from being the warmest year in the 175 years records have been kept, it is also above the 1.5-degree limit set as the goal of the Paris Climate Agreement.  While a single year above 1.5 degrees of warming does not mean that the efforts to limit global warming have failed, it is a strong warning that the risks to human lives, economies, and the planet are increasing.

Rising seas are destroying buildings

Alexandria is the second largest city in Egypt and is the largest city on the Mediterranean coast.  Its history goes back over 2,300 years and it was once home to a lighthouse that was among the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and a Great Library that was the largest in the ancient world.  The modern city has more than 6 million residents but still has many historic buildings and ancient monuments.  But perhaps not for long.

Rising seas and intensifying storms are taking a toll on the ancient port city.  For centuries, Alexandria’s historic structures have endured earthquakes, storm surges, tsunamis, and more.  They are truly marvels of resilient engineering.  But now, climate change is undoing in decades what took millennia for humans to create.

Over the past two decades, the number of buildings collapsing in Alexandria has risen tenfold.   Buildings are collapsing from the bottom up as a rising water table weakens soil and erodes foundations.  Since 2001, Alexandria has seen 290 buildings collapse.  Comparing present-day satellite imagery with decades-old maps, the authors of a study by the Technical University of Munich have tracked the retreat of Alexandria’s shorelines to determine where seas have intruded into groundwater. The authors say that more than 7,000 buildings in Alexandria are at risk.  They call for building sand dunes and planting trees along the coast to block encroaching seawater.

The true cost of this gradual destruction goes far beyond bricks and mortar.  This is the gradual disappearance of historic coastal cities.  Alexandria is a warning for such cities around the world.

Amphibians and climate change

Amphibians are a group of vertebrate animals that include frogs, toads, and salamanders. They are unique for their ability to live both in water and on land during different stages of life. Amphibians play a crucial role in ecosystems, often serving as both predators and prey in food webs.

Amphibians are the world’s most at-risk vertebrates, with more than 40% of species listed as threatened.  They are cold-blooded creatures and rely on external sources to regulate their body temperature.  But needing to regulate their body heat this way makes amphibians particularly vulnerable to temperature change in their habitats. 

Researchers from the University of New South Wales in Australia can now predict the heat tolerance of 60% of the world’s amphibian species.  This new tool will allow scientists to better identify which amphibian species and habitats will be most impacted by climate change.  

The study’s landmark findings, which were recently published in the journal Nature, found that 2% of amphibian species are already exposed to overheating in shaded terrestrial conditions.  According to the research team, a 4°C global temperature increase could push 7.5% of amphibian species beyond their physiological limits. 

Local amphibian extinctions can trigger ecological repercussions, including reshuffling community compositions, eroding genetic diversity, and impacting the food chain and overall ecosystem health.

The researchers highlight the importance of vegetation and water bodies in protecting amphibians during heat waves, and emphasize the need to provide adequate water and shade during future conservation efforts.

The importance of shallow water

Shallow water habitats are disappearing around the world

Vacationers love beaches with shallow water.  They are great for families with small kids and for less confident swimmers.  Such beaches often attract intense coastal development.  However, they are also fragile habitats that are disappearing around the world.

A new study led by the University of South Florida highlights the need to protect these marine ecosystems.  Shallow coastal waters are known as tidal flats, and they are critical to global seafood supplies, local economies, and overall marine health.  Shallow water ecosystems are interlinked with other marine habitats and are vital for the lifecycle of marine species far from shore.

Shallow water ecosystems are at risk not only from coastal development, but from harmful algal blooms triggered by human activity, from marine heatwaves, and from boats operating in sensitive habitats such as seagrass meadows. These habitats contribute millions of dollars to local economies such as those in Florida but there is not much direct habitat managements in place to protect these ecosystems.

The University of South Florida study, published in the journal Fisheries, enumerated ten core strategies that boaters, anglers, wildlife managers, and policymakers can adopt to prioritize and preserve shallow marine ecosystems from humans and from increasingly powerful weather events.  Foremost among these efforts are the protection of key fish species, such as tarpon, whose protection would benefit additional species that use the same habitats.

Habitat management and restoration should be essential concerns for coastal communities to provide long-term benefits for both themselves and for the marine life that depends on shallow-water habitats.

Drying rivers and hydropower

Drying rivers threaten hydropower around the world

A decade ago, Ecuador began a major transition to using hydroelectric power.  Like in many other South American countries, the presence of abundant rivers could supply large amounts of energy and drive economic expansion and lead to a new era of prosperity.

This ambitious plan has run into the impacts of climate change.  An extraordinary drought has engulfed much of South America, drying rivers and reservoirs, and has put Ecuador’s power grid on the brink of collapse. 

Since September, daily energy cuts in Ecuador have lasted as long as 14 hours.  An industry group says that the nation is losing $12 million in productivity and sales for every hour the power is out.  Just a few years ago, Ecuador was making great strides in reducing poverty.  Now, as the energy crisis has increased its grip on the country, much of what was achieved is being lost.

Ecuador’s situation is not unique.  In recent years, abnormally dry weather in multiple places has resulted in extreme low water levels in rivers, reducing hydropower resources in Norway, Canada, Turkey, and even rainforest-rich Costa Rica.

Overall, more than one billion people live in countries where more than half of their energy comes from hydroelectric plants.  With a warming climate and increasing incidence of extreme weather events like drought, it is likely that hydropower will become a less reliable energy source.  More than a quarter of all hydroelectric dams are in places with a medium to high risk of water scarcity by 2050.

Hydroclimate whiplash

Hydroclimate whiplash has increased as much as 66% since the mid-20th century

Hydroclimate whiplash is a term that describes rapid swings between intensely wet and dangerously dry weather.  Global weather records show that the occurrence of hydroclimate whiplash has increased by 31% or as much as 66% since the mid-20th century. 

California’s experience is a prime example of this phenomenon.  After years of severe drought, dozens of atmospheric rivers subjected the state to record-breaking amounts of precipitation in the winter of 2022-23.  A second extremely wet winter in the southern parts of the state the following year resulted in the growth of abundant amounts of grass and brush. 2024 saw a record-hot summer which was then followed by a record-dry start to the 2025 rainy season.  The result was the catastrophic wildfires in the Los Angeles area in January.

Research by UCLA climate scientists explains that the primary driver for the increasing occurrence of hydroclimate whiplash is the expansion of the atmospheric sponge – that is, the growing ability of the atmosphere to evaporate, absorb and release water.  Every degree Celsius that the planet warms increases this ability by 7%. 

The global consequences of hydroclimate whiplash include not only floods and droughts but also the increased danger of whipsawing between the two, leading to the bloom and burn cycle that California recently faced. The risk of wildfire is twofold:  first by increasing the growth of flammable grass and brush in the months before the fire season, and then by drying it out to dangerous levels with extremely warm and dry weather.

Dangers of distant fires

Smoke from wildfires can drift thousands of miles

Smoke from wildfires is well known to exacerbate health problems like heart disease, lung conditions, and asthma.  People living in the vicinity of where fires occur face these dangers.  But a new study at the University of Maryland has found that there are health impacts from wildfires occurring thousands of miles away.

During the summer of 2023, massive Canadian wildfires created a vast plume of smoke that drifted more than 2,000 miles across the country resulting in poor air quality across the entire East Coast of the U.S. 

Baltimore had very dark skies over a six-day period in June 2023, sending many individuals to doctors’ offices complaining of breathing issues.  University of Maryland researchers found that medical visits for heart and lung problems rose by nearly 20% during that period.

Using satellite and EPA data combined with electronic health records, the researchers found increased likelihood of patients going to the doctor for complications related to cardiopulmonary conditions during the days with the most smoke in the air.  They found a 55% increase in the risk for an outpatient visit for heart and lung conditions and these additional patients tended to be older, non-smokers, and more socio-economically affluent than the typical patients who see their doctors for such conditions when the air quality is good.

With more climate-related events likely to occur in the future, doctors may require better tools to help disadvantaged patients on so-called hotspot days when conditions are most dangerous.  Increasingly common wildfires are a particular danger to people even when those fires are far away from where they live.

The doomsday glacier

The doomsday glacier is melting

The Thwaites Glacier is an enormous Antarctic Glacier.  Its area is larger than that of Florida – in fact, larger than 30 other U.S. states – and it is melting.  It has been retreating for 80 years but has accelerated its pace in the past 30.  Its shedding of ice into the ocean already contributes 4% of global sea level rise.  If it collapsed entirely, it would raise sea levels by more than 2 feet.  For this reason, it has been dubbed the Doomsday Glacier.

A team of scientists has been studying it since 2018 in order to better understand what is happening within the glacier. They sent a torpedo-shaped robot to the glacier’s grounding line, which is the point at which the ice rises up from the seabed and starts to float.  The underside of Thwaites is insulated by a thin layer of cold water.  However, at the grounding line, tidal action is pumping warmer sea water at high pressure as far as six miles under the ice.  This is disrupting the insulating layer and is speeding up the retreat of the glacier.

The potential collapse of the glacier is not even the only massive risk it poses.  It also acts like a cork, holding back the vast Antarctic ice sheet.  If that ice sheet were ever to collapse, sea levels could rise 10 feet.

A critical unanswered question is whether the ultimate collapse of Thwaites Glacier is already irreversible.  There are regular heavy snowfalls that occur in the Antarctic which help replenish ice loss.  Whether nations’ progress in slowing climate change can change the balance between ice accumulation and ice loss on the glacier remains to be seen.

Industrial agriculture and the risk of pandemics

The domestication of pigs, cows, chickens, and other animals as livestock for their meat, milk, and eggs was historically revolutionary.  It boosted food security by giving people a readily-available means of feeding themselves as opposed to more traditional methods such as hunting and fishing.

But the industrialization of agriculture has led to horrendous conditions for animals.  Many are kept in huge quantities and packed together with little regard for their health and welfare.  This approach is designed to maximize production while minimizing costs.

With its chemical inputs and toxic outputs, intensive animal agriculture is also a major threat to the environment.  In fact, it’s a major driver of habitat degradation and biodiversity loss all around the globe.  

According to a new study led by researchers from the University of Exeter in the U.K., intensive livestock farming can also increase the risk of new pandemics.  These findings go against the widely held belief that industrialized farming reduces the risk of disease transmission between animals and humans. 

Zoonotic diseases are those that are spread from animals to humans.  According to the CDC, zoonotic infections account for three in every four new or emerging infectious diseases in humans.  The current bird flu outbreak in the U.S. is an example of this. 

In the paper, which was recently published in the journal Royal Society Open Science, the researchers conclude that the effects of intensifying animal agriculture “are at best uncertain and at worst may contribute to emerging infectious disease risk.”

Industrial animal agriculture is a threat to both human health and the health of our planet.

Deer vs. caribou

White-tailed deer expansion bad news for caribou

The combination of a warming climate and human disruption of traditional habitats has been causing changes in the ranges of many animal species.  Over the past century, white-tailed deer have greatly expanded their range in North America.  Researchers from a group of Canadian institutions have been investigating the expansion of the deer in the boreal forest of Western Canada.  A five-year study used 300 wildlife cameras throughout the region to track the activities of large mammals.

Climate change has created milder winters and habitat alteration from forestry and energy exploration have created new food sources for deer. 

The expansion of deer in the forest has not been a good thing for the woodland caribou. The species was designated as threatened in 2002.  As of 2011, only 34,000 remained in the region.  Deer are ecosystem disruptors, in this case disrupting existing predator-prey dynamics.  Areas with more deer typically have more wolves and wolves are predators of caribou.  Deer can handle high predation rates, but the already threatened caribou cannot.

Understanding the relative roles of climate and human land use is essential in efforts to recover caribou populations.  It is complicated because further north, the climate becomes harsher and human land use decreases.  The debate over the relative effect of climate or habitat change is one of the most pressing issues facing ecologists globally as they pursue efforts for ecosystem restoration.

In any case, winter severity is expected to decline as climate change progresses.  Therefore, deer are expected to keep expanding northward and increasing in abundance, which means increasing risk to caribou.

Carbon dioxide and wildfires

Rising carbon dioxide levels are fueling wildfires

Climate change is a key factor in the increasing risk and extent of wildfires.  Wildfires require the alignment of several factors, including humidity, temperature, and the lack of moisture in fuels, such as trees, shrubs, and grasses.  All of these factors have strong ties to climate variability and climate change.

While the global surge in wildfires is often attributed to hotter and drier conditions, a new study by researchers from the University of California – Riverside has found that increasing levels of a greenhouse gas may be an even bigger factor. 

According to the study, which was recently published in the journal Communications Earth & Environment, carbon dioxide is driving an increase in the severity and frequency of wildfires by fueling the growth of plants that become kindling.

Centuries of burning fossil fuels to produce heat, electricity and to power engines has added alarming amounts of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere.  In fact, atmospheric CO2 levels are measuring more than 420 parts per million, which is a level not seen on earth for 14-16 million years. 

Plants require carbon dioxide, along with sunlight and water, for photosynthesis.  But rising levels of CO2 in the atmosphere are driving an increase in plant photosynthesis – an effect known as the carbon fertilization effect.  This effect can make plants grow bigger and faster. 

Warming and drying are important fire factors.  These are the conditions that make the extra plant mass more flammable.  But the study found that the increase in fires during hotter seasons is driven by the CO2-fueled growth of plants.   

The researchers hope their findings will urge policymakers to focus on reducing carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere.

Satellites discovering penguins

Satellites have discovered new colonies of emperor penguins

The loss of sea ice in Antarctica has forced emperor penguins to seek out new breeding grounds.  Some colonies have traveled more than 20 miles in search of stable ice.  Emperor females lay a single egg on a stretch of sea ice at the start of winter and males keep the eggs warm while the females go hunting for up to two months to bring back food for their hatchlings.

Emperor penguins are the tallest and heaviest of all living penguin species.  The loss of sea ice has led to unprecedented breeding failure in some emperor penguin colonies.  Emperor penguins are not threatened by hunting, habitat loss, or other human-caused problems, but the changing climate could be their undoing.

Emperor colonies are easy to spot from above.  The penguins are up to four feet tall and the droppings from large colonies stand out vividly against white snow.  A careful study of satellite imagery has revealed four previously unknown colonies of emperor penguins along the edges of Antarctica.  This is the first bit of good news about the penguins in quite a while.  The new discoveries, reported in the journal Antarctic Science, brings the total number of known colonies to 66.

The new discoveries are encouraging, but emperor penguins remain at risk from the warming climate.  Three of the four new colonies are small, with fewer than 1,000 birds.  So, the discovery does not have a big impact on the overall emperor penguin population.  The addition of the new colonies is overshadowed by the recently reported colony breeding failures resulting from early and rapid ice losses.

Aphids And Monarchs | Earth Wise

Aphids are negatively impacting monarch butterfly populations

Last year, the monarch butterfly was officially designated as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.  Estimates are that the overall population of the species has dropped between 20% and 90% over the past several decades. 

The migratory western population of monarchs is at the greatest risk of extinction, having declined by as much as 99.9% between the 1980s and 2021.  Legal and illegal logging and deforestation to make space for agriculture and urban development has destroyed much of the butterflies’ winter shelter in Mexico and California and pesticides and herbicides throughout the butterflies’ range kills both the butterflies and the milkweed that their larvae feed on.

A new study by the University of Florida has found that aphids feeding on the milkweed that grows across the southern portions of the US causes the butterflies to lay fewer eggs on the plants and the caterpillars developing on those plants were slower to mature.  The study showed that monarch laid three times as many eggs on aphid-free plants as they did on aphid-infested plants.

For years, there have been efforts to plant milkweed in urban areas to support monarch populations.  However, aphids and other insect pests often reach high densities on plants in urban settings. 

The researchers are advising home gardeners in the southern U.S. who want to conserve monarch butterflies to make use of safe techniques to limit aphid populations such as insecticidal soap.  This may not always be an option and the researchers are investigating other options to keep aphids at low levels that aren’t harmful to monarchs.

Methane Emissions And The Paris Agreement | Earth Wise

The Paris Agreement is a legally binding international treaty on climate change adopted at the UN Climate Change Conference in 2015.  Its goal is to strengthen the global response to climate change by committing to limit the rise in global average temperature to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels, and pursue efforts to limit that increase to just 1.5°C. 

Achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement requires reaching net-zero carbon dioxide emissions by or around 2050, as well as deep reductions in methane and other emissions. 

According to a new study by researchers from Simon Fraser University in Canada, reductions in methane emissions are needed urgently  if we are to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement.  The study, which was recently published in the journal Nature’s Communications Earth & Environment, suggests that global warming levels could be kept below 2°C if methane mitigation efforts are initiated globally before 2030.  However, delaying methane mitigation to the year 2040 or beyond would increase the risk of exceeding 2°C, even if net-zero carbon dioxide emissions were achieved.

Methane is a potent greenhouse gas, second only to carbon dioxide in contributing to global temperature increases over the last two centuries.  However, methane is known to warm the planet 86 times more effectively than carbon dioxide over a 20-year period.

During the past 40 years, more than 60% of global methane emissions have been produced as a result of human activities, such as fossil fuel exploitation, livestock production, and waste from landfills.

Beaver Believers | Earth Wise

Believing in beavers as ecosystem engineers

Beavers are ecosystem engineers based on their ability to construct dams and create ponds.  By doing so, they create wetland habitat for other species.  They create biodiversity by allowing plant species to emerge in new places as they clear out existing trees and other plants.  Beavers improve water quality and their dams store water during droughts.  Their handiwork minimizes flood risk and mitigates flooding impacts.

Before beavers were widely trapped, there were beaver dams just about everywhere in the American west.  Now beaver rewilding is trying to restore many western ecosystems. In places like Idaho, ranchers have gone from seeing beavers as a nuisance to actually recruiting them onto their land.  One cattle rancher began stream restoration on his land with beaver rewilding in 2014.  By 2022, he was a firm “beaver believer”.  There are now over 200 beaver dams along Birch Creek near Preston, Idaho, and the stream now flows 40 days longer into the year.

NASA has established a team to investigate the extent to which beavers can have an outsized and positive impact on local ecosystems.  The team is using NASA’s Earth Observation satellites to observe the effects beavers are having.  Satellites can collect data from large areas and can pass over the same areas regularly and across seasons.  The goal is to support people on the ground who are implementing beaver rewilding efforts to increase water availability and to increase habits for fish and other species.  NASA’s project will run through 2025 and it plans to expand it to other states with similar terrain and water management strategies.
