A hidden cost of climate change

Climate change is dramatically impacting food production by altering rainfall patterns, increasing temperatures, and triggering more frequent extreme weather events.  These changes make crops more vulnerable to droughts, floods, heatwaves, pests, and diseases, leading to lower yields and greater uncertainty for farmers worldwide.

But climate change isn’t just reshaping our planet.  It’s also changing what’s on our plates.  According to a new study by researchers from Liverpool John Moores University in the UK, rising carbon dioxide levels and warmer temperatures may be making food less nutritious.

The research team focused on popular leafy vegetables, including kale, rocket, and spinach.  The researchers simulated future UK climate conditions in growth chambers to study how the crops responded to hotter, CO2-rich environments.

The research team found that elevated CO2 levels help crops grow faster and bigger, but not healthier.  Over time, the crops showed a reduction in key minerals like calcium and certain antioxidant compounds.  These changes were exacerbated by increases in temperature.  In fact, the combination had complex effects.  The crops did not grow as big or fast, and the decline in nutritional quality intensified.

This nutritional imbalance poses serious human health implications.  Rising CO2 levels can increase sugar in crops while reducing essential nutrients, leading to calorie-rich but nutrient-poor diets. This shift may raise the risk of obesity, diabetes, and nutrient deficiencies, especially in vulnerable populations.

The challenge ahead isn’t just to grow enough food to feed a growing population, but to preserve the quality of that food in a changing climate.

The world is warming and it’s happening faster

This summer has already seen unprecedented heat in many places.  It started with a record-breaking heat dome in June in the United States.  Alaska had its first-ever heat advisory that month.  Europe has seen triple-digit temperatures in cities like Paris, Madrid, and Rome and even in places like Austria, Sarjevo, Bulgaria, Croatia, and Serbia.  On June 28th, a temperature of 96.8 degrees was measured in Biasca, Switzerland.

According to the latest report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the world is getting hotter, faster.  Human-caused global warming is now increasing by 0.27 degrees Celsius per decade.  That rate was recorded at 0.2 degrees in the 1970s and has been increasing ever since.

Climate scientists have long predicted that the rate of warming in the atmosphere would speed up, which has been evident from measurements for quite a while.  But now, these trends that have mostly been seen in charts and graphs are playing a growing role in people’s lives.

Each increase in the global mean temperature brings about a relatively larger increase in atmospheric extremes that include powerful downpours and severe droughts and wildfires.  According to climate models, extreme rainfall intensifies by 7% with each degree Celsius of atmospheric warming.  But recent data indicates that such record-shattering events are increasing at double that rate.

The current US administration may not accept the reality of the changing climate, but the planet really doesn’t care what it believes.

Marine heatwaves are spreading

Marine heatwaves are spreading around the world

Sea surface temperatures broke records in 2024 and a quarter of the world’s oceans are experiencing temperatures that qualify as a marine heatwave.  A marine heatwave is a prolonged period during which ocean temperatures are significantly warmer than average for that specific location and time of year. 

Unusual heatwaves have occurred in all the major ocean basins around the planet in recent years and some have become so intense that they are being called super marine heatwaves.

The seas off the coasts of the UK and Ireland experienced an unusually intense and long-lasting marine heatwave starting in April.  Australia was recently struck by heatwaves on two coasts.

Hotter oceans are causing drastic changes to marine life, sea levels, and weather patterns.  Some of the most apparent casualties of ocean warming have been coral reefs.  About 84% of reefs worldwide experienced bleaching-level heat stress at some point between January 2023 and March 2025.

Excess heat in the oceans can affect weather patterns, making hurricanes more likely to rapidly intensify and become more destructive.

A recent study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences concluded that climate change has been responsible for the overwhelming majority of marine heatwaves in recent decades.

People are learning to forecast these events.  Eventually, parts of the ocean might enter a constant state of marine heatwave, at least by how it is defined today.  Studying what is going on in the oceans today may provide insights into the future of the world’s oceans and provide guidance on how to try to achieve different outcomes.

Planting trees to cool the planet

Planting lots of trees is one of many strategies being pursued to combat climate change. Forests absorb carbon dioxide, provide shade, and help regulate temperatures. They also support biodiversity and improve air and water quality.

According to a new study by researchers from the University of California – Riverside, restoring forests to their pre-industrial extent could reduce global average temperatures by 0.34 degrees Celsius. That’s equivalent to about 25% of the warming the Earth has already experienced.

The study models restoring 4.6 million square miles of forest.  While previous studies have focused on the role trees play in removing carbon, this research adds that trees also alter atmospheric chemistry in ways that boost their cooling impact.

Trees release natural chemicals called BVOCs – biogenic volatile organic compounds – which interact in the atmosphere to form particles that reflect sunlight and promote cloud formation. These effects enhance the cooling impact of forests, especially in climate models that take these chemical reactions into account.

But not all reforestation is created equal. The benefits of reforestation vary by region, with tropical forests offering stronger cooling and fewer drawbacks.  Importantly, the researchers emphasize that meaningful climate benefits don’t require restoring every lost forest. Small, localized efforts can still shift regional climates.

While forest restoration can meaningfully aid climate efforts, the researchers stress that it must complement – not replace – fossil fuel reductions.

Hidden hydrogen

The idea of using hydrogen as a fuel or an energy source has been around for a long time.  Hydrogen is the most common element in the universe, but most of it is locked up in various chemical compounds, such as water.  Hydrogen is a clean fuel; burning it or using it to generate electricity in a fuel cell produces no greenhouse gas emissions.  But more than 99% of the hydrogen that people current produce is obtained by methods that result in greenhouse gas emissions.

A new study by scientists at the University of Oxford, the University of Durham in the UK, and the University of Toronto looks at geological environments in which naturally occurring hydrogen could be hiding.  According to the study, over the last billion years, the Earth’s continental crust is likely to have produced enough hydrogen to satisfy the energy needs of modern society for 170,000 years.

Much of that hydrogen is likely to have been lost or is inaccessible; most of it is not economically feasible to extract.  But even the relatively small amount of hydrogen left could provide thousands of years of energy for us.  We just have to be able to find it.

The researchers have developed what they call an “exploration recipe” which identifies where natural hydrogen might be located as well as where it could be commercially feasible to extract.  These places with hydrogen have so-called reservoir rocks and geologic formations that prevent the gas from leaking into the atmosphere.

A few such places have already been identified such as one in Albania.  There are various candidates to explore, even including an area in Kansas.  The study’s authors have founded a company whose mission is to find these natural sources of hydrogen.

Record forest loss

A record amount of forest was lost last year

The world lost a record amount of forests last year.  The biggest factor for the unprecedented losses were wildfires that raged around the world.

According to the annual update by the University of Maryland and the World Resources Institute, pristine rainforests alone lost 17 million acres, which was nearly twice as much as in the previous year.  Overall, the world lost the equivalent of 18 soccer fields of forested land every minute last year.

Over time, agriculture has been the primary cause of forest losses, but last year, for the first time since record-keeping began, fires were the leading cause, accounting for nearly half of all the destruction.

With respect to the climate, wildfires emitted over 4 billion tons of greenhouse gasses, which is more than four times the amount generated by air travel in 2023.

Land clearing for agriculture, cattle farming, and other purposes was by no means in decline last year.  In fact, it rose by 14%, which was the sharpest increase in almost a decade.  This trend could permanently transform critical natural areas, unleashing large amounts of carbon, intensifying climate change, and fueling even more extreme fires.

Forests are a major contributor to the natural storing of carbon dioxide.  Intact tropical forests are especially effective at storing carbon.

Brazil has the largest area of tropical forest and it accounted for 42% of all tropical primary forest loss in 2024.  Fires fueled by the worst drought on record caused two thirds of that loss, more than a sixfold increase over the previous year.

It’s only getting warmer

Global warming continues and the planet cannot withdraw from its consequences

Climate science is not popular with the current administration.  Phrases like “climate crisis”, “clean energy”, and “climate science” itself are prohibited from websites, reports, regulations, and other communications by government employees and federal funding recipients.  Once again, the United States is turning away from climate mitigation efforts and will have a drastically reduced ability to forecast disasters and head off their worst consequences.

Meanwhile, global warming continues, and the planet can’t withdraw from its consequences.

The hottest year in nearly two centuries was recorded in 2024.  According to a new report by the World Meteorological Organization, there is an 80% chance that at least one year over the next four will surpass 2024 as the warmest year on record. 

The consequences of warming will probably vary widely across the world.  But likely occurrences include rapid thawing of Arctic Sea ice, drier seasons in the Amazon, excess rain in places like Alaska, northern Europe, and the Sahel in north-central Africa.  Hotter temperatures lead to more evaporation of water from plants and soil, leading to droughts and failed crop seasons.  The warmer atmosphere holds more moisture, which increases the chance of flooding from downpours and stronger hurricanes.

Ignoring what is going on with the climate or thinking that it will only impact other people in other places is nothing short of foolhardy.  The planet does not care about politics.  What is happening to the climate will be in just about everyone’s backyard soon enough.

Living in a warming world

As global temperatures rise due to increased greenhouse gas emissions, communities around the world face more frequent and intense heatwaves, droughts, and extreme weather events. These growing climate pressures not only strain infrastructure and natural resources, but also play a critical role in shaping where people live. 

Recent projections from the First Street Foundation, which analyzes climate risks across the United States, highlight just how significant these shifts could be. In Sacramento County, California, rising flood risks, declining air quality, and soaring insurance costs could lead to a population decline of up to 28% by 2055. The risk assessment also projects that Monmouth and Ocean counties in New Jersey could each lose more than 30% of their populations. And Fresno County, California, could see nearly half of its residents relocate due to mounting climate-related pressures.

Urban areas like cities, towns, and suburbs are particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.  Cities become significantly hotter due to the abundance of heat-absorbing surfaces and lack of green spaces, which intensifies heatwaves, worsens conditions for vulnerable populations, and may ultimately force some people to move.

Addressing these challenges requires a combination of climate solutions focused on both mitigation and adaptation. Solutions like expanding green infrastructure with urban parks and green roofs, and promoting sustainable development through energy-efficient buildings and transit-friendly design could all play a vital role in strengthening climate resilience.

As the planet warms, where we live – and how we live there – is rapidly being redefined.

Feeding the future

Climate change is already affecting the yields of major staple crops around the world, and researchers warn that the impacts will become more severe over time. Rising temperatures, shifting rainfall patterns, and more frequent extreme weather events are disrupting growing seasons and reducing agricultural productivity.

Addressing these growing threats requires rethinking how we grow, distribute, and consume food.  To kick off Climate Solutions Week, we wanted to examine some solutions that could make food systems more resilient, sustainable, and adaptable to our rapidly changing environment.

One solution is Climate-Smart Agriculture, which blends traditional practices with modern techniques to boost productivity while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Methods like zero tillage, intercropping, and crop diversification could improve soil health, conserve water, and help farms withstand climate extremes.

Expanding the production of highly nutritious and climate resilient food crops – like millet, sorghum, teff, quinoa, chickpeas, and tepary beans – will also have an important role to play.  At the same time, reducing food waste through better storage, labeling, and surplus food re-use could help meet demand without increasing production pressure.

Agriculture is the largest user of freshwater globally, and climate change is intensifying water shortages.  Farmers will need to transition to water-efficient farming practices, including drip irrigation, rainwater harvesting, and the reuse of treated wastewater. 

Together, these solutions could help revolutionize the global food system to both feed a growing population and help protect the planet.

The warmer, greener Arctic and greenhouse gas

About 15% of the Northern Hemisphere is covered by permafrost.  Permafrost is soil and sediment that has remained frozen for long periods of time, in some cases as much as 700,000 years.  It contains large amounts of dead biomass that has accumulated over millennia and hasn’t fully decomposed.  Therefore, permafrost is an immense carbon sink.

The Arctic is warming four times faster than the rest of the planet and, as a result, thawing permafrost is becoming a carbon source.  As warming continues, ice is melting, and vegetation is spreading.    A new study, published in Nature Climate Change, looked at the state of the Arctic and boreal north from the period 1990 until 2020.  The study found that although half of the Arctic region has been growing greener, only 12% of those green areas are actually taking up more carbon.  For one thing, the growth of forests means that there is more fuel for wildfires which are increasingly common.

A study of lakes in West Greenland found that thousands of crystal blue lakes have turned brown during record heat spells.  Runoff from melting permafrost made the lakes opaque killing off plankton that absorb carbon dioxide.  Meanwhile, plankton that release carbon dioxide multiplied.  So, these lakes went from being carbon sinks to being carbon sources.

As the northern latitudes warm, ice and permafrost are melting, vegetation is spreading, and the region is becoming a source of heat-trapping gas after having been a place where carbon has been locked away for thousands of years.  According to the Nature Climate Change study, roughly 40% of the Arctic is now a source of carbon dioxide.

New highs for carbon dioxide

New highs reached for global carbon dioxide emissions

Last year was the hottest year on record and the ten hottest years on record have in fact been the last ten years.  Ocean heat reached a record high last year and, along with it, global sea levels.  Those are rising twice as fast as they did in the 1990s.

The World Meteorological Organization reports that the global atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide reached a new observed high in 2023, which is the latest year for which global annual figures are available.  The level was 420 ppm, which is the highest level it has been in 800,000 years. 

The increase in carbon dioxide levels was the fourth largest one-year change since modern measurement began in the 1950s.  The rate of growth is typically higher in El Niño years because of increases from fire emissions and reduced terrestrial carbon sinks.

Concentrations of methane and nitrous oxide – which are two other key greenhouse gases – also reached record high observed levels in 2023.  Levels of both of these gases have also continued to increase in 2024.

The annually averaged global mean near-surface temperature in 2024 was 1.55 degrees Celsius above the 1850-1900 average.  Apart from being the warmest year in the 175 years records have been kept, it is also above the 1.5-degree limit set as the goal of the Paris Climate Agreement.  While a single year above 1.5 degrees of warming does not mean that the efforts to limit global warming have failed, it is a strong warning that the risks to human lives, economies, and the planet are increasing.

Are today’s refrigerants safe?

The refrigerants being used today may not be safe

Refrigeration is based on heat transfer mediums that absorb heat from the area being cooled and transfer it to the outside environment.

The earliest refrigerants were dangerous substances like ammonia.  In the 1930s, chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) like Freon became the standard refrigerant for use in refrigeration systems and even in aerosol cans.  When these substances were found to be depleting the earth’s ozone layer, the Montreal Protocol dictated their phaseout and by the mid-1990s, CFCs were largely replaced by hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs).

HFCs don’t deplete the ozone layer, but they were eventually determined to be potent greenhouse gases, thousands of times more planet-warming than carbon dioxide.   As a result, the global phaseout of HFCs began in 2016, and have been increasingly replaced by hydrofluoroolefins (HFOs), which are considered a more environmentally-friendly alternative to all their predecessors.

Trying to not be surprised by additional unpleasant discoveries about refrigerants, researchers are studying the potential environmental impacts of HFOs.  Researchers at the University of New South Wales in Australia have found that HFOs can break down in the atmosphere and that some small amounts of the resultant products are in fact fluoroforms, which are the HFC with the greatest global warming potential and can stay in the atmosphere for up to 200 years.

That only a small amount of HFC gets into the atmosphere is good, but nevertheless it reveals that the consequences of replacing widely-used chemicals are not a simple matter to determine.

Tigers in India

The Anthropocene is the term that describes the current era in Earth’s history when human activities are having a significant impact on the planet.  It is an epoch filled with species extinction and species attrition in both numbers and range.  The population of large carnivores are among the most affected species and recovering these animals that play important roles in ecosystems is a formidable challenge.

Tigers in Asia are a prime example of extirpation – removal of a species from a specific area.  They have been eliminated in more than 90% of their historic Asian range over the past century.  A new study, published in Science has found that tigers in India are making a comeback.

India’s National Tiger Conservation Authority estimates that between 2010 and 2022, India’s tiger population grew from 1,706 to 3,682.  Tigers are thriving not only on protected lands but also near some human communities.

Tigers are gone from poorer areas where poaching was prevalent and from areas affected by the violent conflict associated with India’s Maoist rebellion.  On the other hand, the big cats can be found near some prosperous communities where poaching is rare.  Farmers keep cattle in enclosures to protect them from tigers.  

The success in protecting tigers in India could provide some insights for Europe where wolves are making a comeback, and perhaps even in the American West where the resurgence of wolf populations is triggering a violent backlash.

Large predators can survive in the modern world with creative thinking and willingness to find a balance between protection and coexistence.

A record warm January

January saw record warm temperatures around the world

Americans experienced unusually cold and wintery weather in January.  Places like southern Louisiana and Florida saw appreciable amounts of snow.  For those who experienced January’s Arctic blast, it was a cold January.  But despite that, January was the world’s warmest on record, extending a run of extraordinary heat in which 18 out of the last 19 months saw an average global temperature more than 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial times.  In fact, the global average temperature in January was 1.75 degrees above the pre-industrial average.

The exceptional warmth was surprising to climate researchers.  It happened despite the emergence of La Niña conditions in the Pacific Ocean, which tend to lower global temperatures, at least for a while.

Researchers are investigating whether there is something beyond the effects of greenhouse gas emissions that is boosting temperatures to an unexpected degree.  It is true that emissions, associated with the burning of coal, gas, and oil, reached record levels in both 2023 and 2024.  But January’s warmth was still something of a surprise.

One prevalent theory is that cutting dangerous pollution is playing a role in causing global warming to accelerate.  As regulators have curbed sulfate pollution to protect people’s lungs, the cooling effect of these particles that help form more and brighter clouds has diminished.

January demonstrates that the global climate system is complex and the weather in any particular region does not necessarily reflect what is happening to the planet as a whole.

Megadroughts

A new study by Swiss and Austrian scientists has found that persistent multi-year droughts have become increasingly common since 1980 and will continue to proliferate as the climate warms.

There are multiple examples in recent years in places ranging from California to Mongolia to Australia.  Fifteen years of persistent megadrought in Chile have nearly dried out the country’s water reserves and even affected Chile’s vital mining output.  These multi-year droughts have triggered acute water crises in vulnerable regions around the world.

Droughts tend to only be noticed when they damage agriculture or visibly affect forests.  An issue explored by the new study is whether megadroughts can be consistently identified and their impact on ecosystems understood.

The researchers analyzed global meteorological data and modeled droughts over a forty-year period beginning in 1980.  They found that multi-year droughts have become longer, more frequent, and more extreme, covering more land.  Every year since 1980, drought-stricken areas have spread by an additional fifty thousand square kilometers on average, an area the size of Vermont and New Hampshire combined. 

The trend of intensifying megadroughts is clearly leading to drier and browner ecosystems.  Tropical forests can offset the effects of drought as long as they have enough water reserves.  However, the long-term effects on the planet and its ecosystems remain largely unknown.  Ultimately, long-term extreme water shortages will result in trees in tropical and boreal regions dying, causing long-term and possibly irreversible damage to these ecosystems.

Cold spells and global warming

Global warming and cold spells

January saw some major bouts of subfreezing temperatures across much of North America and significant snowfall in places like Pensacola, Florida and New Orleans.  This spate of frigid weather undoubtedly prompted many people to question whether global warming is really happening.  But such cold spells quite likely are not happening in spite of global warming, but actually as a result of it.

The polar jet stream is a slim band of westerly winds that circles the Arctic.  It is formed where cold air from the north meets warmer air to the south.  As the planet warms, the Arctic has been heating up nearly four times faster than the rest of the planet, which narrows the difference in temperature between the northern air and southern air.  The result is that the jet stream is weaker and more meandering, which allows frigid air to reach further south.

The polar vortex is a whirling mass of cold air that extends across the Arctic.  It is stronger in the winter when the Northern Hemisphere leans away from the sun.  The polar jet stream normally holds on to the vortex and keeps it far to the north.  But when the jet stream gets wobbly, this mass of cold air can break out and travel south, even to places like Florida, Louisiana, and Texas.

The planet as a whole is warming, and the Arctic is warming even faster.  But there will still be plenty of ice, snow, and frigid air in the Arctic winter for decades to come.  As the behavior of the polar jet stream gets increasingly erratic, there may well be more frequent episodes of plunging temperatures in areas unaccustomed to them.

The human footprint on Earth

The Earth is a pretty big place, and it is easy to think that humans and their activities occupy very little of it.  But the impact of human activities on our planet continues to grow.  Recent satellite images from NASA’s Earth Observatory show the staggering extent of the human footprint on Earth.

Agriculture is a major part of it.  Farms and pastures take up almost half of the world’s habitable land – land not covered by ice or desert.  Greenhouses have recently proliferated tremendously and now cover 3.2 million acres, an area the size of Connecticut, and they even have effects on local climates.

More than half of the world’s population now lives in cities, which are expanding rapidly.  Enormous cities in Asia are changing the landscape in places like Thailand and Indonesia.  Apart from taking up lots of land, many of the world’s cities are immersed in clouds of air pollution that they generate.

Greenhouse gas emissions continue to grow, and temperatures continue to rise.  The effects of this on the planet are increasingly evident.  Seas are rising, ice is melting, glaciers shrink away, and wildfires continue to burn.  The massive wildfires in and around Los Angeles have made major changes in the local landscape.  Rising seas have flooded coastal wetlands and elsewhere, rivers and lakes have shrunk.

There are also human impacts visible from space that represent positive signs.  Large solar arrays supply the cheapest form of energy in most parts of the world and the number and size of solar installations are at a record high.   These solar installations provide some hope that global warming can be slowed.

Investing in carbon capture

The interests of billionaires seldom seem to coincide with our own.  In fact, they often seem to be quite the opposite.  But there are a number of billionaires who are trying to help the world combat climate change.  Yes, they want to make money doing it, but doing it is nevertheless in everyone’s interest.

A group headed by Bill Gates that included some of the wealthiest people from around the world met last summer in London to evaluate companies working to mitigate the effects of climate change.  These included companies developing carbon dioxide removal technologies.  Stripping carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere is an obvious way to deal with the fact that we continue to dump too much of it into the atmosphere –   obvious, but extremely difficult to do at any scale that makes a difference.

Companies working on carbon capture have raised more than $5 billion since 2018.  There are hundreds of companies working on it and investors include billionaires, venture capitalists, private equity firms, and major corporations.  Companies like Microsoft, Google, and United Airlines have committed billions of dollars to purchase removal credits:  payments to companies for removing carbon dioxide.

There are only a few dozen carbon removal facilities operational today and together they only capture a tiny fraction of the carbon dioxide humans release into the atmosphere.  The hope is that such facilities will scale up in size and number so that they will make a real dent in the problem.  But it will take many years at best, and the planet doesn’t have that much time.  To make a difference, carbon emissions must be reduced as quickly as possible.

Approaching critical global temperature thresholds

The globe is approaching critical temperature thresholds

The Paris Climate Agreement is a global treaty adopted in 2015 to combat climate change by limiting global warming to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels, while striving to keep it below 1.5°C.  But according to recent research, the planet is quickly approaching these critical thresholds. 

An international research team led by scientists from Colorado State University, Stanford University, and ETH-Zurich in Switzerland combined insights from 10 global climate models, and – with the help of artificial intelligence – found that regional warming thresholds are likely to be reached faster than previously thought.

In fact, the researchers found that most land regions will likely surpass the critical 1.5°C threshold by 2040 or even earlier.  Additionally, several regions are on track to exceed the 3.0°C threshold by 2060.  Regions including Central Europe, the Mediterranean, South Asia, and parts of sub-Saharan Africa are expected to reach these thresholds faster. 

The research team relied on transfer learning, a cutting-edge machine learning technique that leverages pre-trained models to tackle new, related tasks.

The research, which was recently published in the journal Environmental Research Letters, found that 34 regions are likely to exceed 1.5°C of warming by 2040.  Of those 34 regions, 31 of them are expected to reach 2°C of warming by 2040, and 26 of these 34 regions are projected to surpass 3°C of warming by 2060.

Corals and climate change

Climate change is a major threat to coral reefs around the world.  Ocean warming triggers coral bleaching – a stress response where corals expel the symbiotic algae essential for their survival.  If coral bleaching is severe, it can lead to coral death.

A new study led by scientists from Newcastle University in England suggests that corals are unlikely to adapt to ocean warming quickly enough to keep pace with global warming, unless there are rapid reductions in global greenhouse gas emissions.

The study, which was recently published in the journal Science, found that coral heat tolerance adaptation via natural selection could keep pace with ocean warming, but only if the climate goals of the Paris Agreement are realized.  In the Paris Agreement, countries agreed to limit global warming by the end of the century to two degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.  

However, current climate policies around the world have the globe on track to warm by three degrees Celsius.  According to the research team, this could lead to significant reductions in reef health, elevated risks of local coral extinctions, and considerable uncertainty in the so-called “evolvability” of corals. 

Coral reefs are among the most biologically diverse ecosystems on Earth.  They are often referred to as the “rainforests of the sea” because they support an incredible variety of marine life.  They provide essential ecosystem services, such as protecting coastlines from erosion and storm surges, supporting fisheries, and serving as a source of income through tourism. Coral reef health is vital for the health of the planet.
