California Trees Are Dying | Earth Wise

Climate change is killing California trees

California relies on extensive forests to help reduce the amount of carbon dioxide entering the atmosphere.  But extensive drought and increasingly frequent wildfires have been reducing the state’s tree population for the past three decades.

A comprehensive study by a team of scientists from the University of California Irvine used satellite data to study vegetation changes between 1985 and 2021.  Across the entire state, tree cover area has declined 6.7% over that time period.  The results varied from region to region across the state.

Southern California exhibited the sharpest decline, where 14% of the tree population in local mountain ranges vanished, potentially permanently.  In the Sierra Nevada mountains, tree populations were relatively stable until about 2010.  After that, a severe drought followed by historically large wildfires resulted in a 8.8% die-off of trees.  The northern parts of the state, with higher rainfall and cooler temperatures, fared better, being able to more easily recover from wildfires.

The study goes beyond measuring the tree population of the state and its effects on carbon storage.  The data is also important for understanding how changes in forest cover affects water resources and fire behavior in the state.

The decline of trees in California is affecting the carbon storage abilities of the state.  The satellite survey showed that as the tree populations have dropped, the state’s coverage of shrubs and grasses has risen, possibly indicating that permanent ecosystem shifts are occurring.  The forces contributing to the decline of trees in California are not going away any time soon.  As a result, the threat to California’s ability to mitigate the effects of climate change continues to grow.

Permanent Time Observation | Earth Wise

Americans have debated the value of daylight savings time going all the way back to Benjamin Franklin.  As a country, we adopted the practice of changing our clocks twice a year in 1918.

Since the energy crisis of the 1970s, there have been a number of initiatives aimed at making daylight savings time permanent.  However, there is also a growing movement to eliminate the practice entirely.

In August, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine published a position statement calling for the abolishing of daylight savings time in favor of fixed, national, year-round standard time.

The statement describes the adverse effects of the annual abrupt switch to daylight savings time, which range from increased risk of stroke and hospital admissions to sleep loss and increased production of inflammatory markers, which are one of the body’s responses to stress.  It also cites studies that show that traffic fatalities increase by as much as six percent in the first few days following the change to daylight savings time.  Other research shows that there is an 18% increase in adverse medical events related to human error in the week after switching to daylight savings time.

In July, a survey by the academy of more than 2,000 U.S. adults found that 63% support the elimination of seasonal time changes in favor of a national, fixed year-round time, and only 11% oppose the idea, but many of those in favor of the idea actually want permanent daylight savings time.

The sleep academy contends that permanent standard time is the best choice to most closely match our circadian sleep-wake cycle while daylight saving time results in more darkness in the morning and more light in the evening, disrupting the body’s natural rhythm.

Residents of Arizona and Hawaii get to sit out this debate since they don’t change their clocks.

Protecting Fresh Produce | Earth Wise

Fresh fruits and vegetables can sometimes become contaminated by microorganisms during their long journey from fields to restaurants and grocery stores.  Contaminated produce can spoil other produce, which increases the number of fruits and vegetables in the supply chain that can cause illnesses. 

In order to prevent this cross-contamination between produce, researchers from Texas A&M University have designed a coating that can be applied to food-contact surfaces, like buckets, rollers, and conveyor belts.  The newly-created dual-function coating is both water-repellent and germicidal.  In other words, it can both repel and kill.  Without water, the researchers say bacteria can’t stick or multiply on surfaces, drastically reducing contamination.

To make this dual-function coating, the researchers chemically-attached a thin layer of silica to an aluminum sheet.  They then added a mixture of silica and lysozyme, a naturally-occurring germicidal protein found in egg whites and tears.  Together, the silica-aluminum and the silica-lysozyme formed microscopic bumps and crevices.  According to the research team, this rough texture, albeit microscopic, is the key to the coating’s superhydrophobic properties.  

The researchers tested the coating’s effectiveness at curbing the growth of two strains of disease-causing bacteria:  Salmonella and Listeria.  Upon review, the number of bacteria found on the dual-coating surfaces was 99.99% less than what was found on the uncoated surfaces. 

Despite the success in preventing bacterial spread, the research team said more research needs to be done to see how well the coating works for mitigating viral cross-contamination.  Since the coating would need to be reapplied after a certain amount of use, the researchers also plan to develop more permanent, dual-function coatings.

Rigs To Reefs

There are about 6,000 offshore oil platforms in the world’s oceans.  They have an immense presence physically, financially and environmentally.  As these massive structures extract hydrocarbons from deep beneath the sea, they also undergo a remarkable transformation under the water.  The enormous substructures that support the platforms become vertical reefs, home to millions of individual plants and animals.

Over time, many oil platforms are decommissioned, and their owners are faced with the choice of either removing them entirely or transitioning them into permanent reefs.   Traditional practice was to restore the site to its original condition, but more recently the idea of “reefing” old platforms has gained popularity.  As of 2016, more than 11% of decommissioned platforms in the U.S. portion of the Gulf of Mexico have become permanent reefs.

Decommissioning and completely removing a platform is a daunting and pricey proposition.  The most recent estimate for removing all platforms off the coast of California alone totals $8 billion.  Modifying the platforms to serve as permanent reefs cuts these costs significantly, especially those associated with hauling, cleaning and disposing of the underwater support structure, which will have thousands of tons of sea-life clinging to it by the time it is removed.

Converting the structure into a permanent reef means making it free of any hydrocarbons or other hazardous materials. But this is still a far cheaper venture than total removal.  Studies of oil rigs as underwater habitats have shown them to be some of the most productive in the world.  They are 3-dimensional reefs whose open construction allows currents to pass through bringing lots of nutrients.

Over time, more and more oil platforms will be decommissioned. Many may end up remaining as permanent homes for undersea life.

Produce Stickers

The fruit and vegetables in most grocery stores these days come with little stickers on them with a numerical code identifying the produce for the cashier at the checkout counter.  They are quite helpful for the cashier but a real irritation for the customer.  Half the time it is difficult to get the labels off the piece of produce and sometimes we don’t notice them at all and end up with a little paper sticker in our salad.
