Sea turtles face threats from climate change

Life is a struggle for survival from the moment a sea turtle hatches.  In fact, only one sea turtle out of every 1,000 typically reaches adulthood as a result of natural predators and other challenges.  Those fortunate enough to make it to adulthood face serious threats from humans. For example, sea turtles are hunted for their meat, eggs, and shells in some regions. Their beach habitats get developed. Harmful marine debris and oil spills pollute their waters and beaches.

Now, climate change is exposing sea turtles to even greater threats.  Rising sea levels and stronger storms threaten to erode and destroy their nesting beaches. Warming oceans disrupt currents, potentially exposing sea turtles to new predators, and damaging the coral reefs that some depend on to survive.

As these environmental challenges intensify, sea turtles are beginning to adapt in surprising ways.  According to a new study by researchers from the University of Exeter in England and the Society for the Protection of Turtles in Cyprus, sea turtles are responding to climate change by nesting earlier.  Researchers monitoring nesting green and loggerhead turtles in Cyprus have discovered they are returning to their regular nesting spots earlier each year to compensate for rising temperatures.

Temperature plays a crucial role in determining the biological sex of sea turtles.  Warmer nest temperatures produce more female hatchlings than males.

But at least for now, sea turtles seem to be doing enough to ensure their eggs continue to hatch by nesting earlier in more ideal temperatures.  While this is good news, there’s no guarantee that it will continue.

Hope for amphibians

Discovery could end global amphibian pandemic

There are more than 7,000 known species of amphibians, the group of animals that includes frogs, toads, and salamanders.  Over the past 25 years, more than 90 species are believed to have gone extinct and at least 500 more have declining populations.

There are many factors contributing to the decline of amphibian populations but the most alarming is a fungus called Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis – or Bd – that ravages the skin of frogs and toads and eventually causes heart failure.  The fungus has been devastating amphibians on nearly every continent.

In a recent paper in the journal Current Biology, scientists at the University of California Riverside documented the discovery of a virus that infects Bd and could be engineered to control the fungal disease.

The researchers were studying the population genetics of the Bd fungus with DNA sequencing technology and uncovered the virus inside the fungal genome.  Some strains of the fungus are infected with the virus and others are not.  They are now looking for insights into the ways that the virus operates to see how it gets into the fungal cells.  The goal is to engineer the virus to infect more strains of the fungus and potentially end the global amphibian pandemic.

Frogs and toads control bad insects, crop pests, and mosquitos.  If their populations around the world collapse, it could be devastating.  They are already having difficulty coping with warmer temperatures, stronger UV light, and worsening water quality in many places. 

Some amphibian species are already acquiring resistance to Bd.  The UCR researchers are hoping to assist nature in taking its course.

Climate change wreaking havoc on Arctic crab populations

Globally, there are more than 6,000 species of crabs.  In Alaska’s waters alone, there are 18 species, including 10 that are commercially fished.  The perils of crab fishing in this region, including freezing temperatures, turbulent seas, and raising full pots that can weigh well over a ton, have been highlighted for many years in the reality TV series Deadliest Catch.        

One of those commercially-fished species is the Alaska snow crab.  Alaska snow crabs are a cold-water species found off the coast of Alaska in the Bering, Beaufort, and Chukchi Seas. 

In October, officials in Alaska announced that the upcoming winter snow crab season would be canceled for the first time ever due to a sharp population decline. While the number of juvenile snow crabs was at record highs just a few years ago, approximately 90% of snow crabs mysteriously disappeared ahead of last season.  Officials also canceled the Bristol Bay red king crab harvest for similar reasons for the second year in a row.

The closures dealt a severe blow to crab fishers in the region.  According to the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute, Alaska’s crab fishing industry is worth more than $200 million. 

The canceled seasons also raise questions about the role of climate change in the snow crab population crash. While the causes of the decline are still being researched, scientists suspect that warmer temperatures are responsible.  Temperatures in the Arctic region have warmed four times faster than the rest of the planet. 

As the climate continues to change, the warming waters around Alaska may become increasingly inhospitable to snow crabs and other species.

Crops May Need To Move | Earth Wise

Climate change might force crops to move

California has unique micro-climate diversity that creates ideal growing conditions for a wide range of crops.  One third of the vegetables and two-thirds of the fruits and nuts we eat in this country are grown on the more than 76,000 farms in California.  But as the climate continues to change, many farmers have started to worry about where and when crops can be grown in the future.   Within the next 20 years or so, some parts of California may become too hot and dry to sustain agricultural production.

According to new research from the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, by the years 2045-2049, warmer temperatures will have a significant effect on cool-season crops such as broccoli and lettuce such that their growing season will need to shift.  On the other hand, warm-season crops like cantaloupe, tomatoes, and carrots will need to move to entirely new growing locations.

The study looked at five key crops that are produced more in California than elsewhere and studied the climate conditions under which they prosper and those under which they fail.  They established the range of conditions for which the crops can remain successful.  Finally they looked at climate projections for various parts of the state.

California’s agriculture is an essential part of our food security, so it is important to predict how future warming will affect when and where crops can be grown.  Changing these things presents challenges.  For example, when considering relocating crops, growers have specialized knowledge of their land and their crops.  If crops need to move to a new area, either the farmers have to move to that area, or they have to grow a different crop.  Either way, it presents a practical and economic burden on the farmer.

Heat-Resistant Coral | Earth Wise

Coral reefs are in decline all over the world.  Corals are under increasing pressure as water temperatures rise and the frequency and severity of coral bleaching events increase.  Nowhere is this more evident than in Australia’s Great Barrier Reef system, where severe bleaching events have happened in three of the past five years. Long-term prospects for the survival of the world’s largest reef system are now considered to be poor.

A team of scientists at Australia’s national science agency – the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization – along with the Australian Institute of Marine Science and the University of Melbourne have successfully produced in a laboratory setting a coral that is more resistant to increased seawater temperatures.

The team made the coral more tolerant to temperature-induced bleaching by bolstering the heat tolerance of the microalgae symbionts that live inside the coral tissue.  They isolated the microalgae from coral and cultured it in the laboratory using a technique called “directed evolution”.  Over the course of four years, they exposed the microalgae to increasingly warmer temperatures.  When the heat-adapted strain of algae was reintroduced into coral larvae, the newly established coral-algal symbiosis was more heat tolerant than the original one.  The heat-tolerant microalgae are better at photosynthesis and improve the heat response of the coral animal.

The next step is to further test the algal strains in adult colonies across a range of coral species.  This groundbreaking research provides a promising and novel tool to increase the heat tolerance of corals and might potentially lead to a way to save the Great Barrier Reef as the world continues to warm.
