It is often said that biodiversity is crucial for staving off extinctions.  Ecosystems are complex and are essentially defined by the interdependencies among the various animals and plants.  It stands to reason that removing species from an ecosystem can have significant effects up and down the food chain.  Extinctions are much more likely when biodiversity diminishes.

When considering the greenhouse gas emissions associated with any energy source, it is important to look at the total life cycle emissions both from the direct use of the energy source and from the indirect emissions associated with building the system, producing and transporting fuels and other supplies and, ultimately, decommissioning the system.   Taking all of this into consideration is necessary in order to have a full accounting of the carbon impact of power sources.

There is a tendency to think of the changes in the energy industry as a pitched battle between fossil fuel companies and renewable energy.  There is some truth to this, but only to a certain extent.   The multi-trillion-dollar fossil fuel industry is made up of businesses dedicated to growth and increased profits.  And like businesses in other industries when major changes occur, fossil fuel companies may read the tea leaves and change with the times.
