Wasting less wastewater

Developing technologies to waste less wastewater

Ultra-pure water is essential for multiple industries, for example semiconductors, batteries, and pharmaceuticals, as well as food and beverage companies.  Such water is produced by various processes including desalination plants that use reverse osmosis.  The byproduct of the processing is industrial brine:  salty wastewater.

The brine produced by desalination is generally dumped into the ocean if the desalination plant is located at the seashore, but if the plant is inland, such as in places like Arizona, that isn’t an option.

Nestle runs a water desalinating plant near Phoenix that generates more than 50,000 gallons of brine every day.  Concentrated brines must be carefully managed and disposed of. 

Researchers at Arizona State University are developing a mobile, closed-loop water recovery demonstration system that aims to recover 50%-90% of previously unusable water from industrial brine and reduce the remainder to solid salt. 

The team’s approach involves pretreating Nestle’s brine to remove larger particles.  It then goes through a reverse osmosis process that results in a stream of high-quality water and a salty concentrate.  The salty concentrate goes through a special membrane that recovers even more pure water.  The highly concentrated brine is then dried and crystalized into a solid salt product.  Atmospheric water harvesters capture any remaining water vapor during the drying process.

In places like Arizona where freshwater is a scarce commodity, finding sustainable ways to separate water from salt is both a scientific challenge and an economic necessity.

Improving perovskite solar cell technology

Perovskites are semiconductors with a specific crystal structure.  Their properties make them well suited for making solar cells.  They can be manufactured at room temperature, using much less energy than it takes to make the silicon-based solar cells widely used today.  As a result, perovskite solar panels would be cheaper and more sustainable to produce.  Manufacturing silicon solar cells takes a lot of energy because silicon is forged at around 3000 degrees Fahrenheit. In addition, perovskites can be made flexible and transparent, making it possible to use them in ways unavailable with silicon solar technology.

But unlike silicon, perovskites are very fragile.  The early solar cells made from perovskites in 2009 and 2012 lasted for only minutes.  Lots of potential, but little practicality.

Recently, Princeton Engineering researchers have developed the first perovskite solar cell with a commercially viable lifetime, which is a major breakthrough.  The team projects that the device can perform above industry standards for about 30 years, which is much more than the 20 years designated as a viability threshold for commercial cells.

The research team has developed an ultra-thin capping layer between two of the layers of a perovskite solar cell.  The layer is just few atoms thick but has been demonstrated to dramatically increase the durability of the device. 

There is great potential for the new solar cell technology.  It has efficiency to compete with silicon cells but can be tuned for specific applications and can be manufactured locally with low energy inputs.  If successfully commercialized, the result will be solar panels that are cheaper, more efficient, and more flexible than what are available today.

Commercially-available solar panels are composed of solar cells that are most often made from various forms of silicon.  Some panels use thin-film cells made from other semiconductor materials.  Solar cells utilize a property of semiconductors that allows them to convert light energy into electrical energy.
