Dangers of distant fires

Smoke from wildfires is well known to exacerbate health problems like heart disease, lung conditions, and asthma. People living in the vicinity of where fires occur face these dangers. But a new study at the University of Maryland has found that there are health impacts from wildfires occurring thousands of miles away.

During the summer of 2023, massive Canadian wildfires created a vast plume of smoke that drifted more than 2,000 miles across the country resulting in poor air quality across the entire East Coast of the U.S.

Baltimore had very dark skies over a six-day period in June 2023, sending many individuals to doctors’ offices complaining of breathing issues. University of Maryland researchers found that medical visits for heart and lung problems rose by nearly 20% during that period.

Using satellite and EPA data combined with electronic health records, the researchers found increased likelihood of patients going to the doctor for complications related to cardiopulmonary conditions during the days with the most smoke in the air. They found a 55% increase in the risk for an outpatient visit for heart and lung conditions and these additional patients tended to be older, non-smokers, and more socio-economically affluent than the typical patients who see their doctors for such conditions when the air quality is good.

With more climate-related events likely to occur in the future, doctors may require better tools to help disadvantaged patients on so-called hotspot days when conditions are most dangerous. Increasingly common wildfires are a particular danger to people even when those fires are far away from where they live.

An Arctic Bus | Earth Wise

People have built vehicles for all sorts of extreme environments. There are deep-sea exploration vessels and there have been lunar and Mars rovers. But one thing that hasn’t existed so far are buses to transport groups of people around in extreme conditions in the Arctic. Engineers at two Russian Universities are developing a passenger bus for riding in the Far North. The project is being funded by the Russian Federation Ministry of Science and Higher Education and the URAL Automobile Manufacturing Plant.

The requirements for the vehicle are daunting. The bus must be operable at extreme temperatures – 60 below zero Fahrenheit and lower – and have no difficulties even in challenging off-road conditions.

Current Arctic crew buses are not capable of getting through snow blockages and the all-terrain tracked vehicles that can get through them do not have sufficient passenger capacity. In addition to being able to go through snowbanks, the bus should be able to float on water for an hour.

Apart from its ability to withstand harsh Arctic conditions, the bus will also have a quarters module. This means that it will have an autonomous life-support system for passengers in case of emergency. The quarters module will be designed to sustain up to 20 people for up to 24 hours. The module might also be used to hold medical equipment, thereby enabling practitioners to reach remote settlements and treat patients.

The first tests of prototypes for the bus will be conducted in the near future. The project aims to have the new Arctic Bus design complete and ready for manufacture by the end of 2023 and it will go into production in 2024.

Disposable Masks And The Environment | Earth Wise

The Covid-19 pandemic has made face masks and other personal protective equipment essential for healthcare workers. Disposable N95 masks became the key requirement to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus. But the wide use of these masks has both financial and environmental costs.

The pandemic is estimated to generate over 7,000 tons of medical waste each day and much of that is in the form of disposable masks. Even though the pandemic has slowed down in many places, health care workers are continuing to wear masks most of the time.

A new study at MIT has looked at the financial and environmental cost of several different mask usage scenarios with an eye on trying to reduce the toll created by the continued need for using them.

If every health care worker in the US used a new N95 mask for each patient they encountered during the first six months of the pandemic, the total number of masks required would be over 7 billion, at a cost of over $6 billion and would generate 92,000 tons of waste (the equivalent of 252 Boeing 747 jets.)

Decontaminating regular N95 masks so that health care workers can wear them for more than one day could drop costs and environmental waste by at least 75% compared with using a new mask for every patient encounter.

Fully reusable N95 masks could offer an even greater reduction in waste, but such masks are not yet commercially available. MIT researchers are developing a reusable N95 mask made of silicone rubber that contains an N95 filter than can either be discarded or sterilized after use. They have started a new company with the goal of commercializing the masks.

An App For Infection Testing

Researchers at Washington State University have developed a low-cost, portable device that works with a smartphone to detect common viral and bacterial infections nearly as well as clinical laboratories. Such a system could lead to faster and lower-cost lab results for fast-moving epidemics, especially in rural or lower-resource regions where laboratory equipment and medical personnel are not readily available.
