A giant plane for giant wind turbines

Wind turbines have been getting bigger all the time.  Larger turbines have real advantages.  They can operate at lower speeds so they can be deployed in more places.  They capture more wind, so they make more power.  Large wind turbines can have blades more than 200 feet long and even larger ones are on the way.  An offshore wind farm in China has turbines with 400-foot blades.

Giant wind turbines face a thorny problem:  getting the blades to where they are to be installed.  The enormous blades can’t be easily shipped across aging roads and bridges.   Tunnels are too narrow, bridges are too low, and roads can be too tight to allow turns when transporting these massive turbine parts.  Some developers have actually had to build special roads for wind projects.

For nearly a decade, a Boulder Colorado company called Radia has been working on what would be the world’s largest plane.  The WindRunner aircraft would have a dozen times the cargo volume of a Boeing 747.  The WindRunner will be 356 feet long and 79 feet tall.  While its primary purpose would be transporting wind turbine blades, the plane could also be used to aid the military or businesses that are thinking really big.  Product developers often don’t even try to invent really big things because there is no way to transport them.  Radia expects the WindRunner to be rolled out before the end of the decade.

The wind industry is currently facing strong opposition from the Trump administration, but wind energy is not going away and bigger and better wind turbines will ultimately be built and will have to be transported.

Cleaning Up Diesel With Bacteria | Earth Wise

Using soil bacteria to clean up seeped diesel

Mothballed military outposts with piles of rusting oil drums are not an unusual sight in Greenland.  There are about 30 abandoned military installations in Greenland and diesel that was once used to operate generators and other machinery has, in many cases, seeped into the ground.

Removing tons of contaminated soil from these sites is incredibly resource-intensive involving the use of aircraft and ships, so it has not really been practical.  As a result, Danish Defense and the engineering company NIRAS instead conducted a five-year experiment to optimize the conditions for naturally occurring soil bacteria to break down the contaminating diesel.

The experiment was performed at Station 9117 Mestersvig, an abandoned military airfield on the coast of East Greenland.  Forty tons of diesel fuel contaminated the soil there.

The remediation method using bacteria is known as landfarming and has most often been applied in warmer climates around the world.  This was the first large-scale test under Arctic conditions.

Landfarming works by distributing contaminated soil in a thin layer, which is then plowed, fertilized, and oxygenated every year to optimize conditions for bacteria to degrade hydrocarbons.

The site was monitored by scientists from the University of Copenhagen, and they found that after five years, the bacteria had bioremediated as much as 82 percent of the 5,000 tons of contaminated soil on the site. 

Based on these results, it appears to be feasible for naturally occurring bacteria to be used to remediate contamination in all of the 30 deserted military installations in Greenland as well as in other Arctic sites contaminated by diesel pollution.

The U.S. Military And Climate Change

According to new research by scientists from Durham University and Lancaster University, the United States military is one of the largest climate polluters.  The U.S. military consumes more liquid fuels and emits more greenhouse gases than most countries.  

The study, published in Transactions of the Institute of British Geographers, finds that if the U.S. military were a country, it would be the 47th largest emitter of greenhouse gases in the world, falling between Peru and Portugal.  And this only takes into account the emissions from its liquid fuel consumption.  For this study, the U.S. military’s 2015 consumption was compared with the 2014 World Bank country liquid fuel consumption. 

In 2017, the U.S. military purchased more than 269,000 barrels of oil a day, emitting more than 25,000 kt- CO2e by burning those fuels.  The Air Force accounted for $4.9 billion worth of this fuel, followed by the Navy at $2.8 billion, the Army at $947 million, and the Marines at $36 million. 

The Air Force and the Navy are not only the U.S. military’s largest purchasers of fuel, they also use the most polluting types of fuel.  The Air Force is the largest emitter of greenhouse gases at more than 13,000 kt CO2e, nearly double that of the Navy’s 7,800 kt CO2e. 

Despite this study’s findings and a general uptick in awareness, it’s unlikely that the U.S. military’s dependence on fossil fuels will change.  That’s because the military continues to pursue open-ended operations around the globe, and the lifecycle of its existing military equipment insures dependence on hydrocarbons for many years to come.

Climate Change Threatens the U.S. Military

According to a new study from the Pentagon, nearly half of United States military sites are threatened by wild weather linked to climate change.  The U.S. Department of Defense states that drought, wind, and flooding that occur due to reasons other than storms topped the list of natural disasters that endanger 1,700 military sites around the world – everything from outposts to large bases.
