Golf courses gone wild

Rewilding golf courses is catching on

Golf courses are a significant burden on the environment.  The US has 16,000 golf courses which use 1.5 billion gallons of water a day and are treated with 100,000 tons of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium each year.  In recent years, the golf industry has taken steps to lighten its environmental toll by using less water, introducing pollinator-friendly plants, and decreasing pesticide and fertilizer use.  The US has more golf courses than any other country, accounting for 42% of all courses worldwide.

There is really an oversupply of golf courses and, as a result, more golf courses have closed than have opened since 2006.  Most closed golf courses end up in the hands of commercial or residential developers, but some of them are allowed to return to nature.

For this to happen, there has to be a willing seller and, more importantly, a conservation-minded buyer who can afford both to purchase the land and to restore it to a natural state.  There have been 28 former golf courses transformed into public green spaces between 2010 and the end of 2022.  But that number seems to be growing.

In 2023, the former Cedar View Golf Course on the eastern shore of Cayuga Lake in upstate New York was bought by the Finger Lakes Land Trust.  In California, places like Santa Barbara, Marin County, and even Palm Springs have all undertaken the transformation of former golf courses into public parklands.

Rewilding a golf course is undoubtedly a disappointment to local golfers, but it can bring big benefits to animals, plants, and people.

Feeding Cows Seaweed | Earth Wise

When cows digest their food, they burp, and when they burp, they release methane.  This is called enteric methane and it’s a real problem.  A single cow belches out 220 pounds of methane each year, which is the greenhouse gas equivalent of burning over 900 gallons of gasoline.  That’s more than the average car uses in a year.

Several studies have shown that feeding cows seaweed has the potential to substantially reduce the amount of methane in cow burps.  The latest comes from a trial that took place at the Straus Family Creamery, an organic dairy producer in Marin County, California.

The trial used a new seaweed-derived feed additive called Brominata.  Brominata is made of a red seaweed called Asparagopsis taxiformis.  The addition of the seaweed to the cows’ diets on the Straus farm resulted in an 52% average reduction in enteric methane emissions.  One cow in the study showed a reduction of 92%.

Cutting enteric methane emissions in half would be a huge improvement that would be quite difficult to achieve by convincing enough people to reduce meat and dairy consumption.

The California Air Resources Board has identified feed additives as an emissions-reduction strategy for the dairy industry.  There are now some synthetic feed additives that have been developed that reduce enteric methane, but they haven’tyet  received FDA approval for use in the U.S.  Brominata has been approved as Generally Regarded as Safe by the California Food and Drug Administration.  Whether it and similar seaweed-based feeds can be produced in sufficient quantity and without adverse environmental effects remains to be seen.  But it is an intriguing approach to solving a complicated problem.

Bomb Cyclones | Earth Wise

Extreme weather phenomena becoming increasingly common

It seems like we are hearing about new weather phenomena pretty frequently these days.  One name that has popped up lately is “bomb cyclones.”  Bomb cyclones, it turns out, are storms that undergo “bombogenesis.”  What that means is a low-pressure area (in other words, a storm) that undergoes rapid strengthening and can be described as a weather bomb, or popularly, a bomb cyclone.

These things usually take place over remote tropical ocean areas but a really intense one struck the Pacific Northwest on October 24th.  The storm off the coast of Washington, with a barometric pressure reading equivalent to a category 4 hurricane, was the second extreme low-pressure storm in the North Pacific in a single week.  Both storms involved pressure drops of more than 24 millibars in 24 hours, making them bomb cyclones.

These storms brought high winds and extreme precipitation that doused wildfires and provided some relief to the extreme drought in Central and Northern California.  Along with these positive effects, however, the storms also caused power outages, flooding, landslides, and mud and debris that washed out roads.

The October 24-25 event brought 16.55 inches of rain to Mount Tamalpais in Marin County, California in a 48-hour period.  Sacramento got 5.44 inches of rain, breaking a 140-year-old record.  And the city had just broken another extreme weather record for the longest dry spell in history.

The storms directed streams of moisture from north of Hawaii toward the West Coast in long, narrow bands of moisture known as atmospheric rivers.  We are learning about all sorts of unfamiliar weather phenomena as extreme weather events become increasingly common.
