Seaweed and concrete

Developing more sustainable and environmentally-friendly concrete using seaweed

Modern civilization is pretty much made of concrete.  People use more concrete than any other substance apart from water.  But concrete is made from cement, and cement is the source of 10% of all carbon dioxide emissions worldwide.

Researchers at the University of Washington and Microsoft have developed a new kind of concrete made by mixing dried, powdered seaweed with cement.  By fortifying cement with seaweed, the global warming potential of the concrete is reduced by 21% without weakening it. 

This novel recipe for concrete was developed using machine learning models, arriving upon it in a fraction of the time it would have taken by traditional experimentation.

Producing cement leads to carbon emissions from the fossil fuels used to heat raw materials and from a chemical reaction called calcination that occurs during the production process.  Seaweed is a carbon sink that pulls carbon dioxide out of the air and stores it while it grows.  By replacing some of cement in concrete, the resultant product has a much smaller carbon footprint.

Machine learning was used to predict the ideal mixture of cement and seaweed to yield concrete with a reduced carbon footprint that still passed mechanical strength tests.  Finding the right mixture would have taken 5 years ordinarily, but the machine learning process took only 28 days.

The researchers plan to generalize their work to different kinds of algae and even to food waste or other natural materials in order to create local, sustainable cement alternatives around the world.

Researchers exploring a carbon-negative concrete

Concrete is a mainstay of modern civilization.  The world produces more than 4 billion tons of it each year and the process requires high temperatures, mostly obtained by burning fossil fuels.  The chemical reactions that produce concrete also produce large amounts of carbon dioxide.  In all, cement production is responsible for about 8% of total global carbon emissions by human activities.

This situation is the impetus for a wide range of research activities aimed at reducing the environmental impact of concrete production.  Researchers at Washington State University have recently developed a way of making carbon-negative concrete: a recipe for concrete that absorbs large amounts of carbon dioxide.

There have been attempts in the past to add biochar to concrete.  Biochar is a type of charcoal made from organic waste that sucks up carbon dioxide from the air.  In earlier attempts, even adding 3% of biochar would dramatically reduce the strength of the concrete.

The WSU researchers found that treating biochar with concrete washout wastewater makes it possible to add much more biochar to concrete without reducing its strength.  Mixing it with biochar adds calcium, which induces the formation of the mineral calcite, which in turn strengthens the concrete.

The researchers were able to add up to 30% biochar to their cement mixture.  Within a month, the resultant concrete was comparable in strength to ordinary concrete.  But at the same time, the biochar was able to absorb up to 23% of its weight in carbon dioxide from the air.  The new concrete is potentially the most environmentally friendly concrete ever developed.

Carbon Dioxide Levels Higher Again | Earth Wise

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reported that carbon dioxide levels measured in May at the Mauna Loa Observatory reached a value of 421 parts per million.  This is 50% greater than pre-industrial levels and is in a range not seen on earth for millions of years.

Before the Industrial Revolution, CO2 levels fairly steadily measured around 280 parts per million, pretty much for all 6,000 years of human civilization.  Since the Industrial Revolution began in the 18th century, humans have generated an estimated 1.5 trillion tons of CO2 pollution, much of which will continue to warm the atmosphere for thousands of years.

The present levels of carbon dioxide are comparable to those of an era known as the Pliocene Climatic Optimum, which took place over 4 million years ago. 

The bulk of the human-generated carbon dioxide comes from burning fossil fuels for transportation and electrical generation, from cement and steel manufacturing, and from the depletion of natural carbon sinks caused by deforestation, agriculture, and other human impacts on the natural environment.

Humans are altering the climate in ways that are dramatically affecting the economy, infrastructure, and ecosystems across the planet.  By trapping heat that would otherwise escape into space, greenhouse gases are causing the atmosphere to warm steadily, leading to increasingly erratic weather episodes ranging from extreme heat, droughts, and wildfires, to heavier precipitation, flooding, and tropical storm activity.

The relentless increase of carbon dioxide measured at Mauna Loa is a sober reminder that we need to take serious steps to try to mitigate the effects of climate change.

More Mega-Droughts | Earth Wise

Climate change leading to more mega-droughts

According to a new report led by researchers from the University of Queensland in Australia, mega-droughts are expected to increase as global temperatures rise with the progression of climate change.  While mega-droughts have no strict scientific definition, most studies – including this one – define them as prolonged droughts lasting two decades or longer. 

The research team analyzed geological records from the Eemian Period – 129,000 to 116,000 years ago – to create a model of what to expect over the next 20-50 years.  The Eemian Period is the most recent in Earth’s history when global temperatures were similar – or maybe even slightly warmer – than they are today. 

By analyzing the climate during this period, the research team found that the world will likely experience increased water scarcity, reduced winter snow cover, more frequent wildfires and wind erosion as a result of global warming.

In the report, which was recently issued by the University of Queensland, the researchers collaborated with the New South Wales Parks and Wildlife Service to identify stalagmites in the northern section of Kosciuszko National Park.  They were able to study small samples of calcium carbonate powder contained in the cave stalagmites, allowing them to identify periods of reduced precipitation during the Eemian Period. 

Historically, mega-droughts have been associated with mass exoduses of people from the affected areas.  In fact, mega-droughts are suspected of contributing to the collapse of several pre-industrial civilizations across Southeast Asia and the Americas.

If humans continue to warm the planet, the researchers say more mega-droughts will be in our future.
