Amphibians and climate change

Amphibians are a group of vertebrate animals that include frogs, toads, and salamanders. They are unique for their ability to live both in water and on land during different stages of life. Amphibians play a crucial role in ecosystems, often serving as both predators and prey in food webs.

Amphibians are the world’s most at-risk vertebrates, with more than 40% of species listed as threatened.  They are cold-blooded creatures and rely on external sources to regulate their body temperature.  But needing to regulate their body heat this way makes amphibians particularly vulnerable to temperature change in their habitats. 

Researchers from the University of New South Wales in Australia can now predict the heat tolerance of 60% of the world’s amphibian species.  This new tool will allow scientists to better identify which amphibian species and habitats will be most impacted by climate change.  

The study’s landmark findings, which were recently published in the journal Nature, found that 2% of amphibian species are already exposed to overheating in shaded terrestrial conditions.  According to the research team, a 4°C global temperature increase could push 7.5% of amphibian species beyond their physiological limits. 

Local amphibian extinctions can trigger ecological repercussions, including reshuffling community compositions, eroding genetic diversity, and impacting the food chain and overall ecosystem health.

The researchers highlight the importance of vegetation and water bodies in protecting amphibians during heat waves, and emphasize the need to provide adequate water and shade during future conservation efforts.

Energy efficient cows

Livestock production – primarily cows – produce nearly 15% of global greenhouse gas emissions, mostly in the form of methane emitted by burping caused by the way they process food.  A single cow produces roughly 200 pounds of methane gas per year and there are 1.5 billion heads of cattle in the world.

Researchers at Penn State University have found that supplementing the feed of high-producing dairy cows with the botanical extract capsicum oleoresin – a substance obtained from chili peppers – or a combination of that extract and clove oil resulted in the animals using feed energy more efficiently. 

Adding these substances – which are commonly called essential oils – to the cattle’s feed results in improved efficiency of energy utilization.  It is known that botanicals have the potential to modify fermentation in the cow’s largest stomach – called the rumen.

There have been previous studies for many years adding substances to dairy cow feed – such as seaweed, garlic, and oregano – in an effort to improve milk production and reduce environmental emissions from dairy farms.

The Penn State study was actually not specifically aimed at methane reduction but rather to better use the available energy from the feed to gain body weight.  However, the researchers found that the yield and intensity of methane from the cows in the study were decreased by 11% by the combination of capsicum oleoresin and clove oil.

Botanicals have shown a wide range of anti-microbial properties against bacteria, protozoa, and fungi, as well as being potential rumen modifiers in cattle.  The new study represents an interesting approach to improve the metabolism of dairy cows.

Pollution From Tires | Earth Wise

A few years ago, researchers investigating massive deaths of coho salmon in West Coast streams discovered that the water contained particles from vehicle tires.  The cause of the fish mortality turned out to be a chemical called 6PPD that is added to tires to prevent cracking and degradation.  The mystery was solved, but so far, the chemical continues to be used by all major tire manufacturers and is found on roads and in waterways around the world.

Worse still, the acute toxicity of 6PPD and the chemicals that it transforms into when exposed to ground-level ozone is only the tip of the tire pollution iceberg.  Tire rubber contains more than 400 chemicals and compounds, many of which are carcinogenic. 

About 2 billion tires are sold across the globe each year and that number is expected to reach 3.4 billion by 2030.  Tires are made from about 20% natural rubber and 24% synthetic rubber, which requires about 4 gallons of petroleum per tire.  Hundreds of other ingredients – including steel, fillers, heavy metals like copper, cadmium, lead, and zinc – make up the rest.

Tire wear particles are emitted continually as vehicles travel.  They range in size from visible pieces of rubber or plastic to microparticles.  Research has shown that a car’s four tires collectively emit half a trillion ultrafine particles per mile driven.  These particles are small enough to be breathed into the lungs and can travel throughout the body and even cross the blood-brain barrier.  Particle pollution from tires exceeds that from tailpipes.

Tire pollution is a huge problem that is just starting to receive the attention it deserves.

Unhealthy Air | Earth Wise

Most of the global population breathes unhealthy air

According to the World Health Organization, almost the entire global population – 99% in fact – breathes air that exceeds WHO air quality limits and threatens their health.

Air quality is of great concern everywhere.  Over 6,000 cities in 117 countries monitor air quality, but the people living in those cities are still breathing unhealthy levels of fine particulate matter and nitrogen dioxide. The WHO is citing these findings as a compelling reason to curb fossil fuel use and to take other steps to reduce air pollution levels. 

There is growing number of studies of the damage air pollution does to the human body.  Even low levels of many air pollutants can cause significant harm.  Particulate matter – especially so-called PM2.5 – is capable of penetrating deep into the lungs and entering the bloodstream, contributing to cardiovascular, cerebrovascular, and respiratory problems. 

Nitrogen dioxide is associated with respiratory diseases – especially asthma – and leads to respiratory symptoms, hospital admissions, and visits to emergency rooms.

The WHO is calling to governments around the world to take additional steps to improve air quality including adopting stricter air quality standards, supporting the transition to clean household energy sources, implementing stricter vehicle emission standards, reducing the use of incineration, and many other actions.

According to the WHO, cities in high-income countries fare better in terms of air quality, but very few places avoid unhealthy air entirely.   Seven million deaths a year are linked to unhealthy air quality.  It is a global crisis that cannot be ignored.

Why haven't crocodiles evolved?

Crocodiles today look very similar to ones from the Jurassic period some 200 million years ago.  In fact, there are very few species of crocodilians alive today – approximately two dozen to be exact.  Many other species have achieved a diversity of many thousands of species in the same amount of time. 

During prehistoric times, many more types of crocodiles roamed the earth, including some as big as dinosaurs and other serpentine forms that lived in the sea.  

According to findings by scientists at the University of Bristol in the U.K., a stop-start pattern of evolution could explain why crocodiles have changed so little over time. In the study, which was recently published in the journal Nature Communications Biology, researchers describe how crocodiles follow a pattern of evolution known as “punctuated equilibrium.”  In other words, crocodiles’ rate of evolution is generally slow, but occasionally picks up because the environment has changed.     

According to the research team, this slow rate of evolution is how crocodile diversity became so limited.  It appears crocodiles arrived at a body that was efficient and versatile.  They didn’t need to continue to change in order to survive.

This efficiency and versatility could be an explanation for why crocodiles survived the meteor impact that wiped out the dinosaurs.  Since crocodiles can’t control their body temperature and rely on the environment for warmth, they generally fare better in warm conditions.  During the age of dinosaurs, the climate was warmer than it is today, which could explain why crocodile diversity was higher.  

The scientists next step is to try to figure out why some prehistoric crocodiles died out while others did not.

A Fabric To Keep You Cool | Earth Wise

About 10% of all electricity consumption in the U.S. is devoted to keeping us cool with air conditioning and other methods.  Researchers at two universities in Shanghai, China have developed a new material that can be made into clothing that cools the wearer without using any electricity.

The new fabric transfers heat, allows moisture to evaporate from the skin, and repels water.  Cooling off a person’s body is much more efficient than cooling off an entire room or a building.  There have been textiles and types of clothing designed to perform the cooling function, but most of those have disadvantages.  These include some combination of poor cooling capacity, high energy consumption, complex and time-consuming manufacturing, and high cost.

The researchers wanted to develop a personal cooling fabric that can efficiently transfer heat away from the body while at the same time being breathable, water resistant and easy to make.

The new fabric is made by electrospinning an ordinary polyurethane polymer with a water-repelling fluorinated version of polyurethane polymer along with a thermally conductive filler composed of boron nitride nanosheets.  The resultant material is a nanofibrous membrane that repels water from the outside but has large enough pores to allow sweat to evaporate from the skin and air to circulate. 

Tests of the membrane demonstrated higher thermal conductivity than other conventional or high-tech fabrics.  Used in clothing, the material would be more effective than previous fabrics in conducting heat away from the body. It may be possible to beat the heat without turning on the AC.   These membranes could also be useful for solar energy collection, seawater desalination, and thermal management of electronic devices.

The Bitter Truth About Caffeine

Coffee will be impacted by the changing climate

Black coffee has a bitter taste. Bitterness evolved as a natural warning system to protect the body from harmful substances.  By the logic of evolution, we should therefore want to spit coffee out, but obviously it doesn’t work that way.

Caffeine itself has a particularly bitter taste.  Surprisingly, a new study at Northwestern University has found that the more sensitive people are to the bitter taste of caffeine, the more coffee they drink. That sensitivity is actually a genetic variant.

So, one would think that people who are especially sensitive to the bitter taste of caffeine would drink less coffee.  The counter intuitive result suggests that coffee consumers acquire a taste or an ability to detect caffeine as a result of the learned positive reinforcement (in other words, the buzz) elicited by caffeine.  People with a heightened ability to taste coffee’s bitterness learn to associate good things with it.

The study also found in contrast that people sensitive to the bitter flavor of a different compound called 6-n-propylthiouracil (known as PROP)avoided coffee as well as red wine.

The study made use of applied Mendelian randomization, a technique commonly used in disease epidemiology, to test the causal relationship between bitter taste and beverage consumption in more than 400,000 men and women in the United Kingdom.

These results shed some light on the disdain many coffee drinkers have for decaf coffee.  It may not be just the lack of buzz that turns them off.  Some of them with the right genes may be missing that extra bit of bitterness that alerts them that something good is about to happen.
