Neighborhood geothermal energy

Residential geothermal energy makes use of the constant, year-round temperature of the earth below the surface to efficiently provide both heating and cooling for a home.  In the summer, the cool earth beneath a house sits at about 55 degrees and can be tapped into with a heat pump to provide cooling.  In the winter, that 55-degree underground expanse provides a much warmer source of air to heat instead of the often freezing-cold air outside.  Geothermal systems are appealing because they use far less energy than other sources of heating and cooling.

Using geothermal energy to heat and cool buildings is nothing new.  But after years of planning and months of drilling into the ground, the first neighborhood-scale geothermal heating and cooling project has come online in Framingham, Massachusetts.

The project ties together 31 residential and five commercial buildings that share the underground infrastructure needed to heat and cool them.  This sort of shared geothermal system has previously been used on college campuses and similar places, but never before across a neighborhood in the United States.

The $14 million project, built by Eversource, broke ground in June 2023, and comprises 90 boreholes or wells drilled 600-700 feet underground. Approximately 135 customers are connected to the system, including low- and moderate-income customers, apartment buildings, a gas station, and a kitchen cabinet showroom.

A total of 13 states, including Massachusetts and New York, are considering pilot projects or advancing legislation that would allow gas utilities to develop networked geothermal heating and cooling.

Giant batteries in the Earth

The wind and the sun are inexhaustible sources of energy, and we are tapping into them to produce electricity at a growing rate around the world.  But neither of them is always available when we need them.  When the sun isn’t shining and the wind isn’t blowing, they don’t work.

An opposite problem also exists.  When our energy needs are low, but it is sunny or windy, solar and wind power are all dressed up with nowhere to go.  Energy storage is the answer to both of these problems.   When there is excess generation, store the energy for later use.  When there is need for energy and not enough is being generated, tap into the energy that is stored.

Giant banks of lithium-ion batteries are the rapidly growing form of energy storage, and they are increasingly providing resilience in the electric grid.  But battery storage is short-term energy storage.  Even the largest battery banks can only provide a few hours of electricity. 

So, there is a real need for “long-duration energy storage” – systems that provide at least 10 hours of backup power and sometimes much more – for the grid to be fully reliable.

Pumped hydro storage, which uses water from elevated reservoirs to drive turbines, has been around for a long time.  Historically, this is the largest form of energy storage in the world.  Other methods include pumping compressed air into underground caverns or lifting massive blocks into elevated positions.  All of these techniques use excess electricity to place things like water, air, or cement into a position where they can be used to drive electrical generators.

The grid of tomorrow will store energy in giant battery banks, but also in the ground, in reservoirs, and in large structures.

Artificial plants to clean indoor air

The average American spends about 90% of their time indoors breathing the air in our workplaces, homes, or schools.  The quality of this air affects our overall health and well- being.  Indoor air quality is an issue because many sources can generate toxic materials, including building materials, carpets, and more.  But high levels of carbon dioxide are a health hazard themselves. Indoor CO2 levels can often be 5 to 10 times higher than the already heightened levels in the atmosphere. 

Many of us make use of air purification systems, which can be expensive, cumbersome, and require frequent cleaning and filter replacements.

Researchers at Binghamton University in New York are working to develop artificial plants that consume carbon dioxide, give off oxygen, and, as a bonus, generate a little electricity. These artificial plants make use of the artificial light in the indoor environment to drive photosynthesis.  They achieve a 90% reduction in carbon dioxide levels, which is far more than natural plants can achieve.

The Binghamton researchers had been working on bacteria-powered biobatteries for various applications, but they repurposed the work into a new idea for artificial plants.  The artificial plants have “leaves” containing a biological solar cell and photosynthetic bacteria.  Their first plant had five leaves and demonstrated promising carbon dioxide capture rates and oxygen generation.  It also produced a little electricity.  If its generating capacity can be improved, it might also be useful for charging cell phones or other practical applications.

Rainfall and sea turtles

Rainfall has a major impact on sea turtles

There are seven species of sea turtles that inhabit the world’s oceans. Six of the seven sea turtle species – all of them except the flatback – are present in U.S. waters, and are listed as threatened or endangered under the Endangered Species Act. 

Sea turtles, which have been around for more than 100 million years, spend the majority of their lives in the ocean, but they do periodically come ashore to nest.  Female sea turtles lay their eggs in the sand and then return to the ocean.  Survival odds for sea turtle hatchlings are quite bleak.  In fact, only one out of every 1,000 makes it to adulthood. 

Research shows that both air and sand temperatures are critical for sea turtle hatchling development.  Cooler temperatures produce larger, heavier hatchlings with more males.  Hatchling size matters because larger hatchlings, which can move faster, are more likely to survive because they spend less time on risky beaches.  But rising temperatures might shorten incubation periods, and erratic rainfall can disrupt growth, potentially affecting survival.

A new international study by researchers from Florida Atlantic University and the University of Tübingen in Germany found that fluctuating rainfall patterns have a greater impact than changes in air temperature on sea turtle hatchling development. 

The results, which were recently published in the journal BMC Ecology and Evolution, reveal that the impact of rainfall varies between species.  As climate change shifts rainfall patterns, the impact on sea turtle nesting sites suggests that global conservation strategies for some species – like loggerhead and green sea turtles – likely need to be updated.

Water from thin air

Creating drinking water from thin air

The Earth’s atmosphere contains enormous amounts of water.  Being able to efficiently and economically extract some of it to provide drinking water would be extremely beneficial to the billions of people across the globe who face chronic water shortages.

There are existing technologies for atmospheric water harvesting – or AWH.  But there are downsides associated with size, cost, and efficiency.   A new device developed by mechanical engineering researchers at the University of Utah has the potential to provide a new drinking water source in arid places.

The device is a compact, rapid-cycling, fuel-fired AWH device.  It relies on adsorbent materials that draw water molecules out of non-humid air and then applies heat to release those molecules into liquid form.

Hygroscopic materials are those that have an affinity for water and soak it up at every opportunity.  Such materials are used, for example, in disposable diapers.  The Utah device makes use of metal organic frameworks, which have enormous amounts of surface area on the molecular scale.

The initial work on the Utah device targeted a small compact water generation unit for soldiers in the field.  Instead of lugging around a large canteen filled with water, the small unit can produce water on demand.  The prototype was able to produce 5 liters of water per day per kilogram of adsorbent material.  Within three days in the field, the system outperforms packing water.  The heat required to precipitate the liquid water was provided by a standard-issue Army camping stove.

Non-military needs are the ultimate application for the device.  The researchers have applied for a patent for what they hope will be a potential solution to a persistent global problem.

Cooling cities

Cooling cities with white roofs

As the climate warms, city dwellers tend to suffer from extreme heat more than people in rural areas because of the urban heat island effect. Extensive surfaces of man-made materials like concrete, asphalt, and brick absorb the sun’s energy and lead to temperatures well above those in the surrounding countryside.

Cities can take countermeasures that include creating urban green spaces full of plants that cool the surrounding air and the use of cool roofs that reflect the sun’s energy back into space.  Local governments in many cities provide incentives for planting more trees.  But more could be accomplished by encouraging the use of cool roofs.

The heat island effect has been well-known for a long time, but scientists are only recently learning what interventions are most effective. A recent study modeled two days of extreme heat in London in 2018 and compared the potential effects of cool roofs, green roofs, roof-top solar panels, and ground level vegetation. They found that cool roofs are the most effective way to lower temperatures and would have reduced London temperatures by 2 degrees on average and as much as 3.6 degrees in some places.

Cool roofs are created by swapping out dark, heat-absorbing roofing materials with reflective materials or simply by painting roofs white. Los Angeles is the first major city to require that all new residential construction includes a cool roof. 

Apart from the effectiveness of passive cooling techniques, using them also reduces the reliance upon air conditioning to protect people from heat.  Air conditioners themselves contribute considerable amounts of heat to urban environments.

The end of the Chevron deference

 At the end of June, the US Supreme Court upended 40 years of legal precedent in a ruling that sharply limited the regulatory authority of federal agencies.  The so-called Chevron Deference doctrine stated that when a legislative delegation to an administrative agency on a particular issue or question was not explicit but rather implicit, a court may not substitute its own interpretation of the statue for a reasonable interpretation made by the administrative agency.

Under the new ruling, courts will have more power to interpret these statutes.  Environmentalists fear that this decision could lead to hundreds of rules being weakened or even eliminated, particularly Environmental Protection Agency limits on air and water pollution, regulations on toxic chemicals, and policies to tackle climate change.

Conservative political organizations have been pushing for decades to roll back the government’s regulatory powers.  The new ruling creates a massive opportunity for environmental regulations to be challenged, considering the proliferation of increasingly activist, right-leaning courts.  In particular, climate regulations under the Clean Air Act are more susceptible to judicial reversal.  The ruling shifts the power from the agencies to the courts.

The danger of this decision is that more Americans will suffer from the worse effects of climate change, air pollution, and other environmental harms that current government regulation protect against.  Any time that the Court makes it harder for the government to regulate and easier for businesses to challenge regulations, it makes it more likely that industries will injure the public and the planet in search of profits.  This is basic economics in action.

Biofuel refineries and toxic pollution

Toxic pollution from biofuel refineries.

There have been decades of government support for renewable, crop-based fuels – primarily corn ethanol.  In fact, it is a required component of gasoline sold in this country.  The biofuels industry has long claimed ethanol to be a clean, greener alternative to petroleum. 

There have been arguments all along that the environmental benefits of corn ethanol are dubious at best because of the energy required to produce the stuff.  There are also issues related to burning a food crop instead of feeding it to people and that the conversion of grasslands and forests to produce it releases massive amounts of carbon.

Recently, another serious concern has emerged.  A new review of industry data has found that the country’s biofuel refineries, mostly located in the Midwest, produce large amounts of toxic air pollutants, in some cases ever more than from their petroleum counterparts.

Emissions data from the country’s 275 ethanol, biodiesel, and renewable diesel plants revealed that they release carcinogenic formaldehyde as well as other potentially dangerous substances including acetaldehyde, hexane, and acrolein.  In 2022, biofuel refineries released 12.9 million pounds of hazardous air pollutants, compared to 14.9 million pounds emitted by oil refineries, and the biofuel plants actually emitted more of the four chemicals just mentioned than petroleum refineries did.

The broad use of crop ethanol is the result of intensive industry lobbying.  Ethanol plants are even exempt from some air pollution permitting requirements.  Perhaps the time has come to revisit its pervasive and mandated use.

A brief bout of bad air in Scotland

Explaining a brief period of poor air in Scotland

Scotland, and the UK in general, used to suffer from sulfur dioxide pollution.  Industrial and domestic emissions, especially from burning coal, contributed heavily to urban air leading to the London smog of the 1950s and the acid rain of the 1980s.  But national air pollution agreements and various international measures have been highly successful in reducing sulfur dioxide emissions.  Desulfurization of coal-fired powerplants and the introduction of ultralow sulfur fuels among other measures have decreased sulfur dioxide emission by 98% since 1970. 

As a result, it came as quite a surprise on May 31st when Edinburgh saw sulfur dioxide levels higher than had been observed in over 30 years.  The levels greatly exceeded air quality objectives for 10 hours with concentrations even creeping towards workplace exposure limits.

What happened?  For once, it was nothing that people did.  Two days earlier, a volcanic fissure eruption took place in the Reykjanes Peninsula in Iceland, some 850 miles from Edinburgh.  Because of an unusual meteorological configuration, the prevailing winds sent the plume of volcanic gases southward towards Scotland.  Had the eruption taken place 60 miles further north or happened a few hours later, the plume of gases would have missed the UK entirely and would have traveled north to the Arctic region.

Icelandic volcanic eruptions have impacted air travel in Europe on a number of occasions.  This non-explosive eruption had little impact outside of its local region, but it turned out to briefly wreak havoc in Scotland.  Fortunately, this pollution event was short-lived.

Beware of the blob

For the past 10 years, there have been several occurrences of a vast expanse of ocean stretching from Alaska to California in which water temperatures are as much as 7 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than normal.  Known jocularly as “the Blob,” the phenomenon can last for several years and decimates fish stocks, starves seabirds, creates blooms of toxic algae, prevents salmon from returning to rivers, and displaces sea lions and whales.

Until recently, there was no accepted explanation for this abrupt ocean heating.  Climate change, even combined with natural cycles like El Niños, is not enough to account for it.

In depth analysis by an international team of researchers has found that the extraordinary heating is the result of a dramatic cleanup of Chinese air pollution.  The decline of smog particles, which to some extent shield the planet from the sun’s rays, has accelerated warming and set off a chain of atmospheric events across the Pacific, essentially cooking the ocean.

This is an example of what can be called the pollution paradox in which global warming is actually increased when air pollution is reduced.  Reduced air pollution on the US West Coast has even been identified as a factor contributing to increased wildfires.  However, air pollution causes more than 4 million premature deaths from cancers and respiratory and cardiovascular diseases each year. 

Nobody thinks that we should stop cleaning up the air to slow down global warming.  The only viable solution is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions as rapidly as possible.

The largest carbon removal plant

Direct air capture (DAC) is process that removes carbon dioxide out of the air and stores it away where it can no longer trap heat in the atmosphere.  It is intended to be a way of getting rid of the greenhouse gases that have built up in the atmosphere.  In principle, it’s a great idea.  In practice, it is a huge challenge.

In 2017, a company called Climeworks became the first company to take carbon dioxide out of the air and sell it as a product for use in carbonated drinks and in greenhouses.  In 2021, the company opened a DAC plant called Orca in Iceland that captures CO2 and permanently stores it underground.  Clients like Microsoft pay Climeworks for doing this as a way of offsetting their own emissions.

Recently, Climeworks has started operating a new plant called Mammoth – also in Iceland – that will be able to capture about 10 times more carbon dioxide than Orca.  Iceland is a prime location for DAC technology because its abundant geothermal energy makes powering it cheap and environmentally friendly.

Mammoth, when fully operational, will remove about 36,000 tons of carbon dioxide a year, the largest DAC system in the world.  But there is a long, long way to go.  Microsoft alone emits nearly 13 million tons of carbon dioxide a year.

There are multiple DAC projects in development including several in the United States being funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.  The four DAC hubs being developed under the program are each supposed to have the capacity to capture at least a million metric tons of CO2 a year.

Whether DAC can make a real difference remains to be seen.

Marine carbon dioxide removal

Marine CO2 removal

About 30% of the carbon dioxide emitted by human activity is absorbed by the oceans.  As a result, they are getting warmer and more acidic, and the currents that help shape global weather are shifting.  To try to reduce global warming, people want to be able to store even more carbon dioxide in the oceans without the negative effects of doing so.

There are multiple efforts across the globe to achieve effective marine carbon dioxide removal.  Some are based on sinking carbon-rich materials to the bottom of the sea.  This is the marine equivalent of capturing CO2 from the air and storing it underground.  Other efforts involve increasing the alkalinity of the ocean, which increases its ability to chemically react with carbon dioxide as well as lowers its acidity, which is desirable in many ways.

Running Tide, a U.S.-based company, has been dumping thousands of tons of wood-industry waste 190 miles off the coast of Iceland.  The company has also been experimenting with dumping algae and kelp and sinking it deep below the ocean.  Such materials on land either get burned or decay, in both cases releasing CO2 into the atmosphere.  On the deep-sea bottom, the carbon is trapped.

Other efforts involve pumping seawater through electrodialysis filter systems to remove excess acidity or adding alkaline rocks to increase water alkalinity.

All of these efforts are a form of geoengineering, and like proposed ideas to cool the atmosphere, pose potential risks.  There is no silver bullet to solve the climate crisis.  It will take a combination of many solutions to address the issue of excess carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.  Marine carbon dioxide removal is one of the solutions that may play a role.

How to make cities cooler

Green spaces and waterways help keep cities cool

In cities, the air, surface, and soil temperatures are almost always warmer than in rural areas. This is known as the urban heat island effect.  Urban heat islands occur when cities replace natural land cover with dense concentrations of pavement, buildings, and other surfaces that absorb and retain heat.

Urban planners around the world have been researching ways to reduce the effects of heat in cities.  For example, trees, green roofs, and vegetation can help reduce urban heat island effects by shading building surfaces, deflecting radiation from the sun, and releasing moisture into the atmosphere.

A new study led by researchers from the University of Surrey in the U.K. has analyzed how well various green spaces and waterways are able to cool down cities.  The study, which was recently published in the journal The Innovation, found that wetlands, parks, and even botanical gardens are among the best ways to keep cities cool.   

In fact, the researchers found that botanical gardens can cool city air by a whopping 9°F during heatwaves on average.  Wetlands can cool city air by 8.5°F on average, followed by rain gardens at 8.1°F, green walls at 7.4°F, street trees at 6.8°F, city farms at 6.3°F, city parks at 5.8°F, and reservoirs and playgrounds at 5.2°F. 

The researchers also found that cities can unlock even greater benefits by connecting green spaces into green corridors.  Greening projects can also help remove carbon emissions and prevent flooding.

The research team hopes its findings will help urban planners design more resilient cities.

Greenland is greening

Greenland is greening

Despite their names, Iceland is very green, and Greenland is very icy.  But in Greenland, that is changing.  Temperatures in the world’s largest island are rising twice as fast as they are in the rest of the world and, as a result, the icy rocky landscape is turning increasingly green.

Satellite records reveal that over the last three decades Greenland has lost 11,000 square miles of ice, which is an area about the size of Massachusetts.  As the ice melts off, tundra and shrublands takes its place.  The ice melt moves sediment and silt and eventually wetlands and fenlands are formed.

Between the late 1980s and the late 2010s, the areas of Greenland covered by vegetation have more than doubled.  The new green areas cover roughly 33,000 square miles, which is an area the size of Maine.

Greenland’s dramatic changes are the result of the warming climate, but in turn, those changes are accelerating climate change.  Land covered with dark green vegetation absorbs more energy from the sun thereby warming the air whereas ice-covered landscapes reflect much of the sun’s energy back into space.  In addition, the rapidly expanding wetlands are a significant source of methane, which traps even more heat in the atmosphere.

Greenland is a poster child for the effects of climate change.  Its glaciers and icecaps are shrinking, glacier-fed lakes are expanding, permafrost lakes are draining, and rivers are transporting vast amounts of sediment and widening.  All of this is going on as its vegetation cover and species diversity is expanding.

Air pollution in India

India is one of the world’s most polluted countries.  In fact, of the 30 cities with the worst air pollution around the globe, 21 of them can be found in India. 

India’s capital city, New Delhi, is the most polluted city in the world.  Concentrations of fine particulate matter (known as PM2.5) in Delhi, which is the name of the larger city that includes the capital New Delhi, are nearly 10 times greater than the World Health Organization guidelines. 

To reduce air pollution in Delhi, officials have focused on measures within the city limits, including boosting public transportation and regulating pollution from industry. 

But according to a review carried out by the University of Surrey and regional government officials in Delhi, the city will also need the help of its neighbors to tackle its killer smog problem.  Some of the pollution plaguing Delhi comes from rural areas in the region –  from things like crop burning, wood stoves, and power plants.  The review, which was part of a paper recently published in the journal Sustainable Horizons, also recommends drafting regional air quality plans, producing smog forecasts, and creating airshed councils to help improve coordination. 

Exposure to air pollution can cause all sorts of major health problems, including asthma, respiratory inflammation, as well as  jeopardize lung function, and even promote cancer.  Long-term exposure to PM2.5 is linked to premature death.  In fact, air pollution causes an estimated 670,000 deaths every year in India. 

Since air pollution doesn’t respect boundaries or borders, solutions require collaboration and the need to focus efforts more broadly in order to achieve emissions reduction goals.

Wildfires and air quality

The impact of wildfires on air quality

The wildfires last summer in parts of the U.S. and Canada fouled the air over much of the country.  Air quality in many places was dangerous for human health.  And such fires are becoming more numerous and more intense.

A new study by the University of Iowa has assessed the effects of two decades of wildfires on air quality and human health in the continental U.S.

From 2000 to 2020, air quality in the western U.S. has gotten worse as a result of the numerous fires in that region.  More generally, all those fires have undermined the success of federal efforts to improve air quality, primarily through the reductions in automobile emissions.

American air had been getting cleaner and clearer as a result of EPA regulations on vehicle emissions, but the surge in wildfires has limited and, in some cases, erased these air quality gains.  Twenty years of efforts by the EPA to make our air cleaner have been lost in fire-prone areas and in many downwind areas.

The Iowa study looked at the concentration of black carbon, a fine-particle air pollutant from fires linked to respiratory and heart disease.  In the western U.S., black carbon concentrations have risen 86% on an annual basis.

Fires have also affected the air in the Midwest, although not to the same degree as in the west.  The eastern U.S. had no major declines in air quality during the 2000-2020 time period.  Given the episodes of smoke from Canadian wildfires experienced by the east coast this past summer – as far south as Florida – even the air in that part of the country is suffering from the spread of wildfires.

Food and the climate crisis

Farm-free food could help mitigate climate warming

Agriculture is a major part of the climate problem and remains one of the hardest human activities to decarbonize.  It’s responsible for approximately 25% of global greenhouse gas emissions. 

Many experts contend that alternative food sources – like insect farming and seaweed aquaculture – are part of the solution.  Additionally, expanding production of climate resilient food crops, including quinoa, kernza, amaranth, and millet, likely also have a role to play. 

But according to a new study led by researchers from the University of California – Irvine, another solution to this problem may be to eliminate farms altogether.  In the study, which was recently published in the journal Nature Sustainability, the research team explored the potential for wide scale synthetic production of dietary fats through chemical and biological processes.  The materials needed for this method are the same as those used naturally by plants: hydrogen (in water) and carbon dioxide (in the air).   

The research team highlighted some of the potential benefits of farm-free food, including reduced water use, less pollution, localized food production, and less risk to food production from weather. 

Cookies, crackers, chips, and many other grocery products are made with palm oil, a dietary fat that continues to be a major driver of deforestation around the world.  However, it remains to be seen how consumers would react if the oil used to bake their cookies came from a food refinery up the road instead of a palm plantation in Indonesia.     

According to the researchers, depending on food refineries instead of tropical plantations for dietary fats could mitigate lots of climate-warming emissions while also protecting land and biodiversity.

Megafires and ecosystems

Wildfires are a natural phenomenon.  They have occurred long before there were people around.  Ecosystems adapt to fires and some species can benefit from them or even depend upon them.  But in recent times, fires have been intensifying and increasing in frequency and they are beginning to outstrip nature’s ability to bounce back from them.

So-called megafires – ones that dwarf typical wildfires in size – have an immediate ecological toll.  They kill individual plants and animals that might have survived smaller fires. 

Over millennia, many species of plants and animals have evolved to adapt to periodic fires.  They are especially sensitive to smoke and take protective action in a timely fashion. Others take advantage of food sources that arise when trees burn.

But even species that capitalize on burned-out areas of forests require oases of healthy woodland for at least part of their activities.  When fires are too widespread, such oases are too few and far between.

Animals that survive fires must find food, water, and shelter in the aftermath.  And all air-breathing animals are going to be impacted by smoke exposure because the chemicals in smoke are toxic to them as well as to people.

In places like Canada’s Northwest Territories, repeated fires have transformed some forests, eliminating dominant tree species and replacing them with others whose light seeds were carried on the wind.

Scientists have estimated that increased global fire activity could push more than 1,000 threatened plant and animal species closer to extinction.  Changing fire patterns are transforming landscapes and utterly remaking ecosystems.

Moisture swing carbon capture

As the world grapples with limiting the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, there is a growing need to capture the carbon dioxide that is emitted as well as preventing it from being emitted in the first place.  Carbon capture can be accomplished at the source of emissions (such as power plants) or it can be done by taking it out of the atmosphere.  The latter is called “direct air capture”.

It is not at all clear whether direct air capture can be accomplished on a scale that would really make a difference and at an acceptable cost either in dollars or energy expended.  But if it can be done that way, it would be a major tool in combatting climate change.

Direct air capture technology generally makes use of sorbent materials whose capacity to capture carbon dioxide and later release it is a function of temperature.  The process requires significant amounts of energy to release the carbon dioxide that has been captured. 

New research from Northwestern University makes use of the “moisture-swing” technique which uses materials whose ability to capture and release carbon dioxide depends on humidity rather than temperature.  While it takes some amount of energy to humidify the volume of air containing the sorbent material, it is very small compared to temperature-driven systems. 

There are many groups working with moisture-swing technology, but the Northwestern Group has identified a number of new sorbent materials with superior properties.

The fundamental questions of scalability and cost remain, but moisture-swing is a promising approach to direct air capture.  If carbon dioxide can be pulled out of the atmosphere in large volumes, it can be concentrated and stored or converted into useful products.

Wildfires And Air Quality | Earth Wise

People in the Northeast have been dealing with unhealthy air quality in recent times because of smoke from hundreds of wildfires in Canada.  Canada has experienced a much higher than average incidence of blazes this year with nearly 500 fires burning uncontrolled at times.

It turns out that states far away from Canada aren’t necessarily free from the impact of the fires.  Early in October, smoke from a wildfire burning in Quebec made its way south all the way down to Florida and created unhealthy air quality and reduced visibility across much of the state.  Smoke from the same fire had created hazy air in Boston, New York City, and parts of Connecticut before heading south.

It took a rather unusual set of atmospheric conditions to make this happen.  The smoke drifted from Canada into the western Atlantic.  From there, it got trapped behind a cold front and was then pushed south along the east coast until it finally moved inland across Florida. 

Wildfires produce a variety of particles and gases from the burning of vegetation such as organic carbon, black carbon, nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide and hazardous air pollutants.  The mixture of particles and gases in wildfire smoke is associated with respiratory symptoms like shortness of breath and reduced lung function, as well as dangerous cardiovascular effects.

Smoke from increasingly frequent and increasingly large fires has started to undo decades of gains in air quality brought about by air pollution policies.  According to researchers, wildfires in the United States in recent years have undone about 25% of past progress in cleaning up air pollution in states from coast to coast.
