Extending the shelf life of produce

More than 30% of the world’s food is lost after it has been harvested.  That’s enough to feed more than a billion people.  Much of that loss is fruits and vegetables that go bad before they can be eaten.

Refrigeration is the most common way to preserve foods, but the energy and infrastructure required is not always available, especially in less affluent regions of the world.

Researchers at MIT and Singapore-based collaborators have demonstrated that they can extend the shelf life of harvested plants by injecting them with melatonin using biodegradable microneedles.

Silk microneedles are tiny, nontoxic, and biodegradable and represent a means of delivering nutrients to plants without triggering a stress response.

Melatonin is a natural hormone that plants already use.  Injecting it was shown to extend vegetables’ shelf life.  The tests used pak choy, an important Asian crop that is very perishable.  Untreated plants at room temperature yellowed within two or three days.  In contrast, treated plants stayed green for five days.  Overall, treated plants retained saleable value for 8 days.  Refrigerated plants had their shelf life extended considerably as well.  However, the most significant value of the technique is that it could enhance the shelf life of perishable produce like pak choy without needing access to refrigeration.

The dose of melatonin delivered to the plants is so low that it is fully metabolized by the crops, so it would not significantly increase the amount normally present in the food.  People would not ingest more melatonin than usual.  The researchers believe that their technique should work with all kinds of produce.

Fertilizers from wastewater sludge

Sewage sludge is the mud-like residue that is produced as a byproduct during wastewater treatment.  In the U.S., sewage sludge is referred to as biosolids after it’s been treated.  The term is meant to distinguish the higher quality, treated sludge from raw sludge and from sludge that contains large quantities of environmental pollutants. 

However, according to a new study by researchers from Johns Hopkins University, fertilizers manufactured from the sludgy leftovers of wastewater treatment processes can still contain traces of potentially hazardous organic chemicals.

The research, which was recently published in the journal Environmental Science & Technology, provides one of the most comprehensive looks at the chemical composition of biosolids across the country. 

Biosolids do contain valuable organic matter and nutrients, including nitrogen and phosphorus.  According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, more than half of the 3.76 million tons of biosolids produced in the U.S. in 2022 fertilized agricultural lands, golf courses, and other landscaped areas.

In the study, the research team screened 16 samples of biosolids from wastewater treatment facilities in nine U.S. and three Canadian cities. The researchers then created lists of the chemicals found in each sample.  They found 92 common compounds that were present in 80% or more of the samples.  The researchers cross-referenced those 92 compounds against the EPA’s CompTox Chemical Dashboard to identify which chemicals were most likely to pose threats to human health or the environment.

The findings could help the EPA identify which organic compounds to investigate further and which chemical contaminants may need government regulation.

Managing Pests With Cover Crops | Earth Wise

The use of pesticides in global agriculture brings with it many problems including the killing of non-target, beneficial species as well as reversing pest-management gains from the use of conservation agriculture methods.

In a newly published study by researchers at Penn State University, the use of plant cover, such as cover crops, was shown to potentially be more effective at reducing pest density and crop damage than the application of insecticides without the downsides.  Cover crops reduce insect pest outbreaks by increasing pest predator abundance.

Cover crops are plantings that are primarily used to slow erosion, improve soil health, enhance water availability, smother weeds, and help control pests and diseases.  Typical cover crops include mustard, alfalfa, rye, clovers, buckwheat, and winter peas.  Most cover crops are fairly inexpensive to plant.

Plant cover can provide habitat for populations of natural enemies of pests.  Winter cover crops can harbor pest predator populations outside of the growing season of the cash crop.  When the cover crop is killed off to allow the growth of the cash crop, residues of the cover crop remain on the soil during the growing season, so they still enhance the habitat for pest predators.

Conservation agriculture includes methods like cover crops, no-till planting, and crop rotation.  The use of cover crops constitutes a form of preventive pest management that is an alternative to planting seeds treated with systemic insecticides to control early-season pests.  There is also the possibility for integrated pest managements, which is an approach in which insecticides are applied but only when pest numbers exceed economic thresholds despite the use of nonchemical tactics.
