How outdoor pollution can impact indoor air quality

The majority of us spend about 80% of our time indoors.   The quality of the air that we breathe depends on the age and type of building we occupy along with any sources of indoor pollution that may exist and, ultimately, the quality of the air outdoors.  The HVAC used to heat, ventilate, and cool the building plays an important role.

The College of Engineering at the University of Utah used its Salt Lake City campus as a living laboratory to explore how outdoor air pollution affects indoor air quality.  Specifically, the nature of outdoor pollution sources strongly affected how effectively HVAC systems prevented external sources from getting into buildings.

Of particular concern is fine particulate matter with a diameter of less than 2.5 microns.  These PM 2.5 particles can penetrate deeply into lungs, potentially causing health problems like respiratory irritation and heart disease.

There are multiple sources of PM 2.5.  The Utah study found that wildfire smoke had four to five times more PM 2.5 infiltration into buildings than pollution from inversions and wind-driven dust events.

An additional finding was that commercial HVAC systems that use air-side economizers are much less effective at keeping out particulate matter.  These systems use special duct and damper systems that reduce energy use by drawing air from outdoors when temperature and humidity levels are optimum.

Americans breathe unhealthy air

According to the American Lung Association’s annual State of the Air report, at least 156 million Americans – 46% of the population – live with unsafe levels of ozone, particulate pollution, or both.

The report analyzed ozone and particulate pollution levels between 2021 and 2023, during which the worst wildfire season on record took place in Canada.  The report ranked pollution levels in counties and cities across the country on a grading scale from A to F.  At least 156 million people live with air that got the poorest grade of F for at least one of three pollutants.   At least 42 million people live in counties that failed all three pollutant standards measured.

While the report attempts to provide a complete picture of air quality around the country, about two-thirds of counties lack air quality monitoring for ozone or particulate pollution. 

The wildfires in Canada are responsible for much of the increase in air pollution in the past several years.  However, climate projections suggest that the conditions that fueled those fires are likely to become increasingly common.

Air quality standards in the United States have generally been improving since the Clean Air Act was enacted by Congress in 1970.  Since that time, levels of key pollutants have dropped by nearly 80%.  But millions of Americans are still breathing polluted air, leading to both acute and chronic health conditions.

Plans by the Trump administration to loosen environmental regulations and cut funding for air quality research are likely to only make matters worse.

Artificial plants to clean indoor air

The average American spends about 90% of their time indoors breathing the air in our workplaces, homes, or schools.  The quality of this air affects our overall health and well- being.  Indoor air quality is an issue because many sources can generate toxic materials, including building materials, carpets, and more.  But high levels of carbon dioxide are a health hazard themselves. Indoor CO2 levels can often be 5 to 10 times higher than the already heightened levels in the atmosphere. 

Many of us make use of air purification systems, which can be expensive, cumbersome, and require frequent cleaning and filter replacements.

Researchers at Binghamton University in New York are working to develop artificial plants that consume carbon dioxide, give off oxygen, and, as a bonus, generate a little electricity. These artificial plants make use of the artificial light in the indoor environment to drive photosynthesis.  They achieve a 90% reduction in carbon dioxide levels, which is far more than natural plants can achieve.

The Binghamton researchers had been working on bacteria-powered biobatteries for various applications, but they repurposed the work into a new idea for artificial plants.  The artificial plants have “leaves” containing a biological solar cell and photosynthetic bacteria.  Their first plant had five leaves and demonstrated promising carbon dioxide capture rates and oxygen generation.  It also produced a little electricity.  If its generating capacity can be improved, it might also be useful for charging cell phones or other practical applications.

Living in a Carbon Bubble | Earth Wise

The earth’s atmosphere is a little over 0.04% carbon dioxide, currently about 420 parts per million.  That’s more than it’s been in millions of years and is changing our climate.  But these levels of CO2 are not enough to directly affect people.

However, people are sensitive to the amount of carbon dioxide they are breathing.  It is actually an indoor pollutant.  High concentrations have been shown to reduce our cognitive performance, our health, and our comfort.  For example, a study in 2012 showed that performance in a variety of cognitive function tests was reduced by 12% when CO2 levels reached 1,000 parts per million and by 51% at 2,500 ppm.

How common are high levels of carbon dioxide?  Pretty common.  Offices often have CO2 levels of 600 ppm or higher, but 5% of US offices have average concentration about 1000 ppm and some conference rooms can reach 1900 ppm.  Classrooms often reach average levels above 1000 ppm.  Passenger aircraft have average levels around 1400 ppm during flight, and can peak over 4,000 ppm.  Cars with one occupant with the windows closed and the air recirculating have levels above 4,000 ppm. 

Where does it all come from?  From us.  We exhale CO2 and if we are in enclosed spaces with insufficient air circulation and ventilation, we end up living in a carbon dioxide bubble.  Most of us live with high CO2 levels – all day and every day.  It is a form of indoor pollution that has not gotten enough attention.

Climate Change And The World’s Fisheries | Earth Wise

Climate change is affecting the world's fishing

According to a new study, approximately 70% of the world’s oceans could be suffocating from a lack of oxygen by 2080 as a consequence of climate change.  This has the potential to impact marine ecosystems all around the world.  

The study, which was recently published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, is the first to use climate models to predict how and when deoxygenation will occur throughout the world’s oceans outside of its natural variability. 

According to the findings, significant and potentially irreversible deoxygenation of the ocean’s middle depths began occurring last year.  The models predict that deoxygenation will begin affecting all zones of the ocean by 2080.

According to the study’s models, mid-ocean depths are already losing oxygen at unnatural rates. Globally, the ocean’s middle depth – known as the mesopelagic zone – is home to many of the world’s commercially fished species.  This makes these new findings a potential harbinger of economic hardship, seafood shortages, and environmental disruption. 

Just like land animals, aquatic animals need oxygen to breathe.  As climate change warms the oceans, the water holds less oxygen and is more buoyant than cooler water.  This leads to less mixing of oxygenated water near the surface with deeper waters, which naturally contain less oxygen.  Warmer water also raises oxygen demand among living organisms, resulting in less availability for marine life. 

The researchers also found that oceans closer to both the North Pole and the South Pole are particularly vulnerable to deoxygenation.  While they are not yet sure why, accelerated climate warming could be the culprit. 

These findings should add new urgency to climate change mitigation efforts.

Nanoplastics In The Air | Earth Wise

The world is awash in plastic.  Discarded plastic litters our roadways, woodlands, and beaches.  It piles up in landfills.  Plastic enters the oceans by the millions of tons.  And plastic is finding its way even to remote and supposedly pristine parts of the world.

A team of researchers has found nanoplastics at the isolated high-altitude Sonnblick Observatory in the Austrian Alps.  This is the first time the particles were found in the area.  The researchers were looking for certain organic particles and only found the nanoplastics by chance.

The detected plastic particles were less than 200 nanometers in size, about one hundredth the width of a human hair.  It is highly unlikely that such particles originated in remote Alpine areas.

The researchers were looking for organic particles by taking samples of snow or ice, evaporating them, and then burning the residue to detect and analyze the vapors.  They described the detection method as essentially like a mechanical nose.  In this case, the nose smelled burning plastics in the form of polypropylene and polyethylene terephthalate.

Looking into the issue, the researchers found a strong correlation between high concentrations of nanoplastics and winds coming from the direction of major European cities – especially Frankfurt and the industrial Ruhr area of Germany, but also the Netherlands, Paris, and even London.

Modeling supports the idea that nanoplastics are transported by air from distant urban places.  This is particularly worrisome because it means that there are likely hotspots of nanoplastics in our cities and in the air that we are breathing.  Plastics appear to be everywhere.

Dangerous Smoke From Australia’s Wildfires | Earth Wise

Wildfires raging across Australia have devastated large swathes of land and prompted one of the largest evacuations in the country’s history.  The fires, which have scorched approximately 20 million acres, have also killed 27 people and affected an estimated one billion animals at the time of this recording. The fire season, though still young, already ranks as among the worst in Australia’s recorded history. 

Away from the flames, millions more in Australia are breathing unhealthy air as a result of the smoke from these wildfires. Wildfires release all sorts of dangerous air pollutants, like carbon monoxide and nitrous oxide.  But wildfires also release fine particulate matter (more commonly referred to as PM2.5), which can be transported long distances.  Breathing in these microscopic particles can lead to respiratory and cardiovascular problems.  High levels of PM2.5 are particularly harmful to older people, young children, and those with weakened immune systems.  

The Australian capital city of Canberra has been covered in a thick haze of smoke from nearby wildfires.  Canberra recorded its worst air quality day on January 2nd, when levels of PM2.5 spiked to more than 200 micrograms per cubic meter during the worst hour.

Smoke has also been fouling Sydney’s air off and on for months, with PM2.5 readings hitting nearly 400 micrograms per cubic meter last month during the highest hour of pollution. 

The U.S. EPA has in place an annual PM2.5 standard of 12 micrograms per cubic meter and a daily (or 24 hour) standard of 35. 

According to the IPCC, southern Australia is expected to see increased risk of fire as the planet continues to warm.  Regrettably, this could be the new normal.

Particulate matter and toxic chemical pollutants are a pervasive problem in the air people breathe in many places.  Poor air quality causes health problems worldwide and is a factor in diseases such as asthma, heart disease and lung disease.
