Repurposing used tires

Every year, millions of tires from cars and trucks end up in landfills.  Just in the U.S., more than 270 million tires were scrapped in 2021 and more than 50 million of them ended up in landfills.  Discarded tires take up huge amounts of space but, more importantly, create environmental hazards.  They leach chemicals into the environment and are a serious fire hazard.

Some tires are chemically recycled via pyrolysis, which is a high-temperature process to decompose the materials in the tire.  But that process introduces harmful byproducts like benzene and dioxins. 

Researchers at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill have introduced a new chemical method for breaking down rubber waste.  The process transforms discarded rubber into valuable precursors for epoxy resins.

Rubber – either natural rubber or the synthetic kind used in tires – is made of polymers cross-linked together to form a tough, flexible, and durable material.  These very desirable properties make it difficult to break down rubber.

The new research has led to a two-step chemical process that breaks down the rubber into functional materials that be used to produce epoxy resins.  The method does not require extremely high temperatures, uses aqueous media, and takes only six hours.   It represents an efficient, scalable solution for repurposing rubber waste which, even as many other aspects of motor vehicle are changing for the better, remains a continuing environmental problem associated with driving.

This new research marks a significant step towards greener recycling technologies.

Biodegradable microplastics

Researchers are developing biodegradable microplastics

Ordinary plastics are not biodegradable, but they are also not indestructible.  Plastics in the environment can break down into tiny fragments – microplastics – and those, unfortunately, are nearly indestructible.  Microplastics have been documented in the oceans and in soil virtually everywhere on Earth including remote frozen wastelands and on top of high mountains.  More recently, they have been found in our own arteries, lungs, and even in placentas.  Microplastic pollution is a very serious problem.

There is considerable ongoing effort to develop biodegradable plastics from non-petroleum sources.  There has been progress but it has not necessarily been aimed at creating bioplastics that do not create microplastic when they break down.

Researchers at the University of California San Diego have developed algae-based polymers that they have shown to degrade when composted.  Recently, in work published in the journal Nature Scientific Reports, they have shown that even fine microparticles of their bioplastic are digested by microbes when placed in a compost.  What remains are the starting plant materials from which the plastic was made.  Products made from this sort of plastic would not only be sustainable beyond their useful lifetime but would also not represent a potential danger to human life.

Creating this eco-friendly alternative to petroleum-based plastic is only the first step toward creating a viable replacement for existing plastics.  It is necessary to be able to use the new material on existing manufacturing equipment and for it to have the same mechanical and thermal properties as the materials it is replacing.  But the researchers are optimistic that this could be a potential solution to an increasingly serious problem.

Tracking down PFAS toxins

PFAS – per- and polyfluoralkyl substances – are a group of organic compounds that have been extensively used to provide water-, oil-, and dirt-resistance to a wide range of products ranging from non-stick pans, clothing, and packaging to paint, car polish, and fire-suppressant foam.  Exposure to specific PFAS compounds is associated with multiple adverse health effects, including altered immune and thyroid function, liver disease, kidney disease, poor reproductive and developmental outcomes, and cancer.  PFAS compounds do not break down in the environment and therefore, over time, become concentrated in plants, animals, and people.

Government agencies such as the EPA in this country and the EU have set strict limits for allowable levels of PFAS in drinking water.  Testing water for the trace amounts of PFAS that constitute the limits is time-consuming and expensive and requires complex equipment and experienced personnel.

Researchers at MIT have now introduced a technique for making a portable, inexpensive test that can easily and selectively detect PFAS in water samples.  The test makes use of a special polymer containing fluorinated dye molecules that cause the polymer to fluoresce red.  If PFAS are present in the sample, they enter the polymer and displace the dye molecules and switches off the red fluorescence. 

The new technique is suitable for on-site detection in highly contaminated regions.  Detecting smaller concentrations can be achieved with sufficient precision after pre-concentrating the samples using the process of solid-phase extraction.

Recycling Tough Plastics | Earth Wise

Thermoset plastics are ones that contain polymers that cross-link together during the curing process to form an irreversible chemical bond.  This improves the material’s mechanical properties, provides chemical resistance, heat resistance, and structural integrity.  Thermosets include epoxies, polyurethanes, and rubber used for tires.  The big problem with thermosets is that they cannot be easily recycled or broken down after use.

Seventy-five percent of all plastics are thermoplastics, which can be recycled by heating them until they become liquid and can then be remolded.   Thermoset plastics, on the other hand, have such strong chemical bonds that they simply will not melt.  They will typically burn before they can be remolded.

Chemists at MIT have recently developed a way to modify thermoset plastics with a chemical linker that makes them much easier to break down, but still retain the mechanical properties that make them so useful.

In a study published in Nature, the researchers produced a degradable version of a thermoset plastic called pDCPD.  They then broke the plastic down into a powder and were able to use the powder to create more pDCPD.  The paper also proposed a theoretical model that suggests that their approach could be used for a wide range of other plastics and polymers, including rubber.

By adding a chemical called a silyl ether monomer to the liquid precursors that from pDCPD plastic, they found that the resultant material retained its mechanical strength but can be broken down into a soluble powder upon exposure to fluoride ions.

Using this approach with other thermoset materials, the researchers believe it will be possible to create recyclable versions of many of the toughest plastic materials.
