Self-healing concrete

Concrete is the most widely used building material on Earth.  It has a dangerous and costly flaw:  it cracks easily.  Cracks in concrete can lead to inconvenient damage or to catastrophic structural failures such as collapses of buildings, bridges, or highways.

Concrete is made by mixing crushed stone and sand with powdered clay and limestone and adding water.  The mixture hardens and once set becomes extremely strong.  However, natural forces like freeze-thaw cycles, drying shrinkage, and heavy loads can cause cracks.  Even very tiny cracks can allow liquids and gases to seep into embedded steel reinforcements causing corrosion and weakness. 

For over 30 years, researchers have investigated microbe-mediated self-healing concrete.  It involves introducing microbial healing agents into cracks and injecting nutrients for the healing agents to produce repair materials.  It is not a very practical solution.

Researchers at Texas A&M University have developed a technique inspired by the behavior of lichen systems. Their system, like lichen, uses a combination of cyanobacteria which turns air and sunlight into food, and filamentous fungi, which produces minerals that seal the cracks. 

In lab tests, the paired microbes were able to grow and produce crack-filling minerals even in challenging environments such as concrete.  If it is possible to produce concrete that can heal itself, it would significantly reduce maintenance costs, extend its longevity, and even protect lives through increased safety.

 Restoring Biocrusts | Earth Wise

Biocrusts are complex ecosystems that form a thin layer on the surface of soils in arid and semiarid environments.  They are composed of variety of microbes including cyanobacteria, green algae, fungi, lichens, and mosses.  Biocrusts play a crucial role in maintaining soil health and ecosystem sustainability.

Biocrusts are under assault from human activities including agriculture, urbanization, and off-road vehicle use. Climate change is also placing stress on biocrusts, which are struggling to adapt to increasing temperatures.

Researchers at Arizona State University have proposed a novel approach to restoring healthy biocrusts.  Their idea is to make use of solar energy farms as nurseries for generating fresh biocrust.  The arrays of solar panels serve as shields from excessive heat and allow biocrusts to flourish and develop.  The newly generated biocrusts can then be used to replenish arid lands where the existing biocrusts have been damaged or destroyed.

When such biocrusts are harvested, the natural recovery process is rather slow, taking around six or eight years to fully recuperate.  But the researchers found that when harvested areas are reinoculated with the microbes, the biocrust cover can reach near-original levels within a year.

The ASU researchers demonstrated the viability of the approach in a three-year study at a solar farm in Arizona’s lower Sonoran Desert.  Based on their results, they conclude that the use of large solar farms for this purpose could provide a low-cost, low-impact, and high-capacity method to regenerate biocrusts and enable soil restoration on a regional scale.  They have dubbed their new approach as “crustivoltaics.”

Thawing Permafrost Is Transforming the Arctic

The Arctic is warming faster than any region on Earth and mostly we’ve been hearing about the rapid disappearance of Arctic sea ice.  But the land in the Arctic is also undergoing major changes, especially to the permafrost that has been there for millennia.

Permafrost occurs in areas where the temperature of the ground remains below freezing for two years or more.  About a quarter of the Northern Hemisphere’s landscape meets this criterion.  Most of the world’s permafrost is found in northern Russia, Canada, Alaska, Iceland, and Scandinavia.

Permafrost regions previously carpeted in cranberries, blueberries, shrubs, sedges, and lichen are now being transformed into nothing but mud, silt, and peat.  So-called regressive thaw slumps – essentially landslides – are creating large craters in the landscape.  (The Batagaika Crater in the Yana River Basin of Siberia is a kilometer long and 100 meters deep).

Apart from the violence being done to the Arctic landscape, the greatest concern is that the permafrost has locked in huge stores of greenhouse gases, including methane, carbon dioxide, and nitrous oxide.  It is estimated that the permafrost contains twice as much carbon as is currently contained in the atmosphere.  As the permafrost thaws, these gases will be released.  With them will be pathogens from bygone millennia whose impact cannot be predicted.  Climatologists estimate that 40% of the permafrost could be gone by the end of the century.

As the permafrost thaws, the region’s ecosystems are changing, making it increasingly difficult for subsistence indigenous people and Arctic animals to find food.  Landslides are causing stream flows to change, lakes to suddenly drain, seashores to collapse, and water chemistry to be altered.

The warming Arctic is about much more than disappearing sea ice.
