Storing carbon in buildings

According to a new study by researchers at the University of California, Davis and Stanford University, construction materials used in buildings have the potential to lock away billions of tons of carbon dioxide.  The study, published in Science, shows that storing CO2 in buildings could be a major contributor to efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Overall efforts in carbon sequestration take carbon dioxide – either as it’s being produced or once it’s already in the atmosphere – and store it away.  Storing it might involve injecting it into underground caverns or deep in the ocean.  Alternatively, storing it might involve converting it into a stable form using chemical reactions.  These various strategies involve both practical challenges and potential environmental risks.

The new study suggests that many materials that are already produced in large quantities have the potential to store carbon dioxide.  These include concrete, asphalt, plastics, wood, and brick.  More than 30 billion tons of these materials are produced worldwide every year.

Ways to accomplish carbon storage include adding biochar into concrete, using artificial rocks loaded with carbon as concrete and asphalt aggregates, plastic and asphalt binders based on biomass instead of petroleum, and including biomass fiber into bricks. 

The largest potential is using carbonated aggregates to make concrete.  Concrete is by far the world’s most popular building material with more than 20 billion tons being produced each year.

The feedstocks for these ways to store carbon in building materials are mostly low-value waste materials, so the economics of implementing these carbon sequestering strategies are likely to be quite favorable.

Reducing farm nutrient pollution

Researchers developing new method to reduce nutrient pollution from farms

When farmers add nutrients to their fields in excess of their crops’ ability to utilize them, these excess nutrients can enter the surrounding environments and create environmental problems.  The primary culprits are nitrogen and phosphorous.  These fertilizer components emerge from fields and enter local waterways in surface runoff.

Researchers at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign have developed a form of designer biochar that can provide phosphorous in a time-released fashion and reduce the amount that escapes into the environment.

The researchers used sawdust and lime sludge, which are byproducts from milling and water treatment plants, respectively.  They mixed the two ingredients and formed pellets which were then slow-burned in low-oxygen conditions to create phosphorous-laden designer biochar.  Once the pellets bind all the phosphorous they can hold, they can be spread onto fields where the nutrient is slowly released over time.

They tested the pellets in working field conditions.  The pellets are used to remove phosphorous from drainage water and then can be reused in the field to provide the nutrient to the plants.   

The results were very encouraging.  The biochar proved to be a very effective way to provide phosphorous to crops and then reduce how much phosphorous enters the environment.  The cost of producing the biochar pellets was less than half that of alternative substances for phosphorous removal. 

There is currently no regulation that requires farmers to remove phosphorous from drainage water but there are a growing number of conservation-minded farmers who want to reduce nitrogen and phosphorous losses from their fields.  The idea that the recyclable pellets can both provide and control phosphorous is an attractive one.

Biochar and carbon

Biochar is a charcoal-like substance that is made by burning organic materials like crop and forestry wastes in a controlled process called pyrolysis, which is burning in an oxygen-deprived environment.  Pyrolysis produces little or no contaminating fumes and results in a stable form of carbon that can’t easily escape into the atmosphere.  Biochar is a very efficient way to convert carbon into a stable form.

Adding charred biomass to improve soil quality has been done for thousands of years.  Indigenous people in the Amazon added charcoal, food residue, and other waste to their soil.  When mixed with soil, biochar creates favorable conditions for root growth and microbial activities, which reduces greenhouse gas emissions. 

Last year, 125,000 tons of carbon dioxide were removed worldwide in the durable carbon market, which is a carbon credit marketplace for carbon removal.  About 93% of that was in the form of biochar. 

Biochar represents a value-added way to deal with agricultural waste and also to make use of dead trees in forests that should be removed to lower the risk of wildfires caused by the presence of all that dry tinder material. 

A bill to fund biochar research is pending before the Senate Agricultural Committee.  It is a rare example of bipartisan legislation.

Biochar is currently expensive to make in the US because large amounts of biomass must be shipped to one of the fewer than 50 small-scale production facilities in the country.   But with appropriate infrastructure, biochar could play an important role in efforts to sequester carbon and combat climate change.

Carbon-Negative Concrete | Earth Wise

Researchers exploring a carbon-negative concrete

Concrete is a mainstay of modern civilization.  The world produces more than 4 billion tons of it each year and the process requires high temperatures, mostly obtained by burning fossil fuels.  The chemical reactions that produce concrete also produce large amounts of carbon dioxide.  In all, cement production is responsible for about 8% of total global carbon emissions by human activities.

This situation is the impetus for a wide range of research activities aimed at reducing the environmental impact of concrete production.  Researchers at Washington State University have recently developed a way of making carbon-negative concrete: a recipe for concrete that absorbs large amounts of carbon dioxide.

There have been attempts in the past to add biochar to concrete.  Biochar is a type of charcoal made from organic waste that sucks up carbon dioxide from the air.  In earlier attempts, even adding 3% of biochar would dramatically reduce the strength of the concrete.

The WSU researchers found that treating biochar with concrete washout wastewater makes it possible to add much more biochar to concrete without reducing its strength.  Mixing it with biochar adds calcium, which induces the formation of the mineral calcite, which in turn strengthens the concrete.

The researchers were able to add up to 30% biochar to their cement mixture.  Within a month, the resultant concrete was comparable in strength to ordinary concrete.  But at the same time, the biochar was able to absorb up to 23% of its weight in carbon dioxide from the air.  The new concrete is potentially the most environmentally friendly concrete ever developed.

Greenhouse Gas Removal And Net Zero | Earth Wise

Reducing the amount of greenhouse gas emissions can slow the progress of global warming but only reaching and sustaining net zero global emissions can halt the progress of climate change.

The move to renewable power and the use of electric transport are substantial and essential ways to reduce emissions.  But even if these transitions take place on a rapid timescale, they will not eliminate all emissions.  Many industrial activities and, especially, agriculture will continue to contribute substantial greenhouse gas emissions.   There are efforts to reduce the contributions of these things, but there are no zero-emission substitutes for most of them.

As a result, actually removing CO2 from the atmosphere once it is there is essential to achieve net zero emissions.  If greenhouse gas removal can be scaled up sufficiently, it opens the option of going “net negative”, which would be the ideal way to mitigate and, better still, reverse the effects of climate change.

There are multiple approaches to carbon dioxide removal.  Some are natural, involving ways of capturing and storing carbon in trees, biochar, and peatlands.  Others are technological.  An example is the system that has just gone into operation in Iceland that uses fans, chemicals, and heat to capture CO2 and then mineralize it in volcanic rock.   Another is a system being tested in the UK that captures CO2 from growing biomass and pipes it to storage under the North Sea.

Much of the attention on carbon capture technology is aimed at trapping the emissions from fossil fuel power plants, but the need to remove carbon dioxide that has entered the atmosphere in other ways is ultimately far greater.
